Determinism and contingency in the evolution of giant filter-feeding vertebrates.

Giant suspension feeders have evolved repeatedly across vertebrates, but the relative roles of deterministic factors and phylogenetic contingency remain unclear. To test this, we integrate new selachian data with published pachycormiform and cetacean datasets to reconstruct phylomorphospaces from standardized cranial, dental, and jaw metrics (gape, orbit size, mechanical advantage, mandibular aspect ratio), evaluate convergence using quantitative metrics, and fit alternative multivariate evolutionary models. Independent lineages evolve from distinct macrophagous ancestors but follow roughly pa

The influence of reproductive mode on resource competition and diversity patterns in Ediacaran early animal communities.

The appearance of the oldest known animals during the late Ediacaran period (~574 million years ago) was followed by a phase of slow diversification, until a later burst of rapid diversification known as the Ediacaran 'second wave'. The reasons behind the tempo of diversification are poorly understood. Here we investigate how reproductive mode mediated community dynamics and in turn Ediacaran macroevolutionary change. We show that widespread reproduction via stolon (namely via filaments connecting clones) limited within-species competition, leading to between-species competition acting at smal

Macroevolutionary trends of avian ichnodisparity in Gondwana.

The concept of ichnodisparity is herein introduced for the study of fossil vertebrates, using Gondwanan avian footprints. We define ichnodisparity for trackways as the qualitative variation in morphological patterns of autopodial impressions, most likely reflecting functional or ecological thresholds. Foot architectural designs are defined based on anatomical features, including digit number and orientation and interdigital webbing, and size. Ichnodisparity in fossil bird tracks is proposed here as a useful proxy for analyzing evolutionary radiations and characterizing macroevolutionary patter

Reduction of body segmentation in the skeleton shrimp Caprella scaura (Amphipoda: Caprellidae) inferred from comparative internal anatomy of Caprelloidea.

In bilaterians, particularly arthropods, body segments are often functionally differentiated along the anterior-posterior axis, resulting in lineage-specific morphologies. Although the acquisition of novel traits in body segments or appendages is considered a key driver of animal evolution, the loss or reduction of these structures has also contributed to the adaptation to new environments and emergence of novel body plans. Members of the family Caprellidae (Caprelloidea: Amphipoda: Crustacea), commonly known as skeleton shrimps, exhibit an unusual body plan characterized by highly elongated t

Tracing the origins of Antarctic periwinkles: an integrative morphological-molecular perspective on Laevilacunaria evolution.

In biogeography, related lineages often share similar range sizes and species richness due to inherited traits and shared geographic history. This expectation is based on phylogenetic niche conservatism and shared dispersal constraints. However, within the subfamily Laevilitorininae, this pattern is not observed: Laevilitorina shows broader distributions and higher species richness than Laevilacunaria despite similar developmental mode and habitat preferences. Combining multilocus genetic data, radular morphology and model-based historical biogeography, we aim to understand the origins of thes

The essential roots of love.

We critically evaluate the robustness of the "quest for significance" as a foundational driver of love. Drawing on attachment and belongingness theories, we argue that love stems from fundamental evolutionary needs for human connection. Furthermore, we propose that there should be a distinction on how the model is applied to explain love across different types and stages of relationships.

Virtual brain endocasts of the palaeanodont Metacheiromys marshi and the neurosensory evolution of early Pholidotamorpha.

Palaeanodonts are extinct placental mammals exhibiting myrmecophagous and fossorial adaptations. They have been viewed as the sister group to Pholidota (pangolins), which is the sister-clade to Carnivora within Ferae. Palaeanodonts display morphological features that are similar to those in pangolins and xenarthrans, which are likely related to their specialized ecological niche. Therefore, it has been challenging to decipher whether shared features are synapomorphies or convergences. Here, we describe in detail the brain virtual endocast anatomy of the middle Eocene palaeanodont Metacheiromys

The evolutionary transition from alga to parasite in the sister lineage of apicomplexans.

The chrompodellids are a collection of photosynthetic "chromerids" and heterotrophic "colpodellids," which are together the sister lineage to the apicomplexans,1 a group of parasites containing many human disease-causing agents and species of ecological and economic importance. These lineages all descend from a photosynthetic ancestor and have been a model to understand the evolutionary transition from free-living alga to obligate parasite. Only a handful of species of chrompodellids are described-most are free-living predators, while two are photosynthetic and two are parasitic.1,2,3,4,5 The

The development and evolution of arthropod tagmata.

The segmented body is a hallmark of the arthropod body plan. Morphological segments are formed during embryogenesis, through a complex procedure involving the activation of a series of gene regulatory networks. The segments of the arthropod body are organized into functional units known as tagmata, and these tagmata are different among the arthropod classes (e.g. head, thorax and abdomen in insects). Based on embryological work on segment generation in a number of arthropod species, coupled with a survey of classical descriptions of arthropod development, I suggest a new framework for the evol

The joint evolution of separate sexes and sexual dimorphism.

Dioecious plants are frequently sexually dimorphic. Such dimorphism, which reflects responses to selection acting in opposite directions for male and female components of fitness, is commonly thought to emerge after separate sexes evolved from hermaphroditism. But associations between allocation to male and female function and traits under sexual conflict may well also develop in hermaphroditic ancestors. Here, we show that variation in sex allocation and a trait under sexual conflict inevitably generates an advantage to sexual specialization, fuelling the transition to dioecy. In the absence

Rethinking thecodonty: the influence of two centuries of comparative dental anatomy on our understanding of tooth evolution.

'Thecodont' refers to teeth implanted in sockets within the jaw, a condition traditionally associated with living mammals and crocodylians, which also coincidentally have teeth attached by ligaments to the socket walls (gomphosis). For over a century, the bony periodontium of many other amniotes has been described as a single tissue, 'bone of attachment', causing confusion over dental tissue homology. The conventional definitions of 'thecodonty' exclude species with fused teeth ('ankylothecodonts'), implying a fundamental difference between mammals, crocodylians and most other vertebrates. How

Movement disorders: a brief overview from an evolutionary perspective.

Evolutionary approach tries to explain several aspects of neurological diseases under the perspective of evolution. Evolutive bottle-neck may explain some aspects of neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, a number of genetic alleles may reflect an evolutionary trade-off between benefits in early life and late-life disadvantages. Antagonistic pleiotropy theory suggests that some adaptive evolutionary changes increase individual fitness early in life, but can exacerbate detrimental aging-related processes We discuss three diseases with movement disorders from an evolutionary perspective: Park

Metabolic complementation between cells drives the evolution of tissues and organs.

Although evolutionary transitions of individuality have been extensively theorized, little attention has been paid to the origin of levels of organization within organisms. How and why do specialized cells become organized into specialized tissues or organs? What spurs a transition in organizational level in cases where the function is already present in constituent cell types? We propose a hypothesis for this kind of evolutionary transition based on two features of cellular metabolism: metabolic constraints on functional performance and the capacity for metabolic complementation between paren

Ontogeny and associated changes of the extinct sloth Simomylodon uccasamamensis (Xenarthra, Mylodontidae) from the Pliocene of the eastern Puna, Argentina.

Within Xenarthra (Eocene-Recent), Folivora developed (late Eocene-Recent) a remarkable diversity with respect to ecology and taxonomy over its evolutionary history. Knowledge of the diversity achieved by members of this clade in high-altitude areas of South America (i.e., Altiplano and Puna regions of Peru, Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina) has been improved in recent decades. A particular example involves the late Neogene Mylodontidae Simomylodon uccasamamensis, known mostly from multiple specimens recovered from the Bolivian Altiplano. Morphometrics and Phylogenomics of Coca (Erythroxylum spp.) Illuminate Its Reticulate Evolution, With Implications for Taxonomy.

South American coca (Erythroxylum coca and E. novogranatense) has been a keystone crop for many Andean and Amazonian communities for at least 8,000 years. However, over the last half-century, global demand for its alkaloid cocaine has driven intensive agriculture of this plant and placed it in the center of armed conflict and deforestation. To monitor the changing landscape of coca plantations, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime collects annual data on their areas of cultivation. However, attempts to delineate areas in which different varieties are grown have failed due to limitation

The evolutionary advantage of artemisinin production by Artemisia annua.

Artemisinin, a potent antimalarial compound, is predominantly derived from Artemisia annua. The uniqueness of artemisinin production in A. annua lies in its complex biochemical pathways and genetic composition, distinguishing it from other plant species, even within the Asteraceae family. In this review, we investigate the potential of A. annua for artemisinin production, drawing evidence from natural populations and mutants. Leveraging high-quality whole-genome sequence analyses, we offer insights into the evolution of artemisinin biosynthesis. We also highlight current understanding of the p

The evolutionary origin and mechanism of chordate tail regeneration. An ancient tale?

Chordate tail regeneration represents the remarkable ability of some chordates to partially or completely regenerate a significant portion of their primary body axis. In this review we will discuss the chordate regenerative ability, what is known about the cellular sources which contribute to the regenerating tail, how various structures such as the spinal cord and vertebral column are re-established, and how scaling of the regenerating tail is regulated. Finally, we propose that tail regeneration is evolutionarily conserved and is fundamentally different from tail development however the orig

Using salamanders as model taxa to understand vertebrate feeding constraints during the late Devonian water-to-land transition.

The vertebrate water-to-land transition and the rise of tetrapods brought about fundamental changes for the groups undergoing these evolutionary changes (i.e. stem and early tetrapods). These groups were forced to adapt to new conditions, including the distinct physical properties of water and air, requiring fundamental changes in anatomy. Nutrition (or feeding) was one of the prime physiological processes these vertebrates had to successfully adjust to change from aquatic to terrestrial life. The basal gnathostome feeding mode involves either jaw prehension or using water flows to aid in inge

Analyses of head and thorax in Eupomphini (Meloidae) suggest that complex behaviors are not associated to changes in general shape.

Our results reject an association between general shape of head and thorax with defensive and courtship behaviors in the studied Eupomphini blister beetles. Instead we found that shape of thorax and head radiated in all directions of the morphospace. We also identified a radical separation between two lineages that could represent future evolutionary constraints for thorax evolution.

Multiscale head anatomy of Megaphragma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).

Methods of three-dimensional electron microscopy have been actively developed recently and open up great opportunities for morphological work. This approach is especially useful for studying microinsects, since it is possible to obtain complete series of high-resolution sections of a whole insect. Studies on the genus Megaphragma are especially important, since the unique phenomenon of lysis of most of the neuron nuclei was discovered in species of this genus. In this study we reveal the anatomical structure of the head of Megaphragma viggianii at all levels from organs to subcellular structur
