The Avidin-Biotin-Peroxidase Complex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ABC-ELISA) with antigen from gerbils infected with alveolar hydatid (GAH) was performed on the sera of 54 patients with multilocular echinococcosis, 107 patients with other diseases and 102 healthy adults. All the sera were diluted 1:200 and an S/N value greater than 2.2 was taken as positive. Both the sensitivity and specificity were 98.1%. We report a case of biotin deficiency developed in a 25-yr-old man with Crohn's disease who had been on total parenteral nutrition for more than 9 months. His cutaneous, ophthalmic, and neurologic manifestations were characteristic of this disease entity described in literature. In particular, the appearance of his face deserves to be called "biotin deficiency facies." After administration of biotin the low plasma nonesterified fatty acid level promptly returned to normal. This phenomenon may prove to serve as a convenient means for the purpose of detecting biotin deficiency.

A biotin-coenzyme Q10-sodium alginate (BTN-CoQ10-SA) nanogel was developed for topical wound healing through combined antioxidant and regenerative delivery. The optimized nanogel showed a particle size of ∼115 nm, zeta potential of -35.1 mV, encapsulation efficiency of 88.3%, and sustained BTN release over 24 h. In a rat excisional wound model, the nanogel achieved 95.1% wound closure by day 14 and significantly outperformed the untreated control. It is known that the crystallizability of protein molecules may be improved by replacing their surface lysine residues with other residue types. In this study, the diagnostic accuracy and practicability of different hybridization techniques for the detection of human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA were tested. Cervical cell scrapes (n = 67) were analysed for HPV-DNAs 6/11 and 16, in order to compare a commercially available in situ DNA hybridization-assay with the conventional Southern-blot analysis. Viable cells or protein extracts were labelled with N-hydroxysuccinimidobiotin and used as target antigens in a biotin-labelled antigen radioimmunoassay (BILA). The binding of the biotinylated antigens to capture antibodies coated on the bottoms of 96-well plastic plates were measured using 125I-labelled streptavidin as the detection step. The assay circumvents some of the problems associated with solid-phase RIA and permits screening of antibodies to undefined protein antigens present in very small amounts in complex protein solutions.

We describe the pathologic changes of single or simultaneous dietary deprivations of biotin (B) and pantothenic acid (PA) in lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush. A deficiency of PA produced gross signs of anorexia, inanition, emaciation, gill abnormalities and high mortality.
