OBJECTIVE: Recent reports indicate that bipolar disorder is frequently underdiagnosed in the clinical population, leading to overuse of antidepressants and underuse of mood stabilizers. This study assessed rates of diagnosis of bipolar disorder in a substance abuse population.
METHOD: The study involved a retrospective chart review of data from 295 patients admitted to an inpatient substance abuse program for men. Data were then analyzed from the 85 patients in the sample who were diagnosed as meeting DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder on intake into the program. Charts were reviewed for re

OBJECTIVE: There is some evidence to suggest that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and juvenile bipolar disorder could be related. This is based on studies of comorbidity and some preliminary family study data. However, doubts continue to be raised about the relationship between the two disorders. This study examined the comorbidity of disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) that include ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) in juvenile bipolar disorder.
METHOD: Seventy-three subjects with onset of bipolar disorder at age 18 years or younger were evalu

OBJECTIVE: To replicate previous findings of high rates of bipolar disorder (BPD) in patients with panic disorder (PD) and determine if youths with both PD and BPD have more severe illness.
METHOD: 2025 youths aged 5 to 19 years seen at a mood and anxiety specialty clinic were assessed using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children-Present Episode, 4th Revision. Diagnoses were made using DSM-III and DSM-III-R criteria and then updated to conform to DSM-IV criteria. Patients were grouped into those with PD (N = 42), those with non-PD anxiety disorders (N

OBJECTIVE: This paper outlines the methodologies used, and preliminary descriptive data collected, on a cohort of familial bipolar disorder (BPD) probands and first-degree relatives taking part in a descriptive and genetic study into familial BPD in New Zealand.
METHOD: Fifty-five bipolar probands and 67 first-degree relatives were interviewed using the modified Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS) and Family Interview for Genetic Studies (FIGS). Data was also collated from other sources. Blood samples were taken for DNA genomic analysis.
RESULTS: New Zealand families in which BPD

OBJECTIVE: There is a pronounced gap in knowledge regarding polygenic underpinnings of youth bipolar disorder (BD). This study aimed to compare polygenic risk scores (PRSs) in youth with BD, youth at high clinical and/or familial risk for BD (HR), and controls.
METHOD: Participants were 344 youths of European ancestry (13-20 years old), including 136 youths with BD, 121 HR youths, and 87 controls. PRSs for BD, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder were constructed using independent genome-wide summary statistics from adult cohorts. Multinomial

Significant efforts have been undertaken to characterize the phenomenology of the high-risk period for bipolar disorder (BD) through the examination of youth at familial risk (i.e., having a first- or second-degree relative with BD) or clinical high risk for the disorder (i.e., youth with BD Not Otherwise Specified [NOS] or major depressive disorder [MDD]). However, little is known about the phenomenology of youth at both familial and clinical high risk for BD. In this study, we examined the clinical and psychosocial characteristics of youth at familial and clinical high risk (HR) for BD, and

Theory and research indicate that activity is fundamental to mood episodes in bipolar disorder (BD), yet researchers have not tested whether energy is more closely tethered to mood in BD compared to those without BD. Eighty-seven participants (13 with self-reported BD) completed 4396 energy and mood ratings through a mood-monitoring application. Mixed modeling analyses indicated that low energy, but not high energy, was related to mood within the BD group. Low energy could provide a strong and easily recognized indicator of negative mood states in persons with BD.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings, including periods of emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression). While the exact underlying neurobiology is not yet fully understood, imbalances in neurotransmitter systems, particularly dopamine, appear to play a central role. For this reason, manipulations of dopaminergic pathways have been used to model mania or depression in rodents. However, models that accurately represent the typical switch between these two episodes are rare, limiting face validity. In a unique model, modern techniques are used to te

BACKGROUND: Patients have been recently reported who had a common symptom of unilateral photophobia. The electroretinograms (ERGs) recorded from the eyes of these patients had a negative shape with the a-wave normal to slightly attenuated, and the rod and cone responses severely reduced, i.e., a-wave > b-wave. The patients did not complain of night blindness, and the visual acuity and color vision were relatively well preserved. These patients were diagnosed with acute diffuse occult inner retinopathy (ADOIR). We report our findings in such a case in which the unilateral findings progressed to

Bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease are two distinct neurological conditions that share common features related to dopaminergic dysfunction. This article presents a comprehensive review of the existing literature to investigate the association between bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease, focusing on the dopaminergic hypothesis and potential therapeutic options. The dopaminergic hypothesis suggests that both bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease involve impairments in the nigrostriatal or mesolimbic dopaminergic pathways. Studies have demonstrated alterations in dopamine regulation

Background and Objectives. Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with a significant burden due to affective symptoms and behavioral manifestations, but also cognitive and functional impairment. Comorbidity with other psychiatric conditions, including personality disorders, is frequent. The comorbidity with psychopathy deserves special consideration given that both disorders share some clinical characteristics, such as grandiosity, risky behavior or poor insight, among others, that can worsen the outcome of BD. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of psychopathy in a sample of c

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common, recurring psychiatric illness with unknown pathogenesis. Much like other psychiatric diseases, BD suffers from the chronic lack of reliable biomarkers and innovative pharmacological interventions. Better characterization of clinical profiles, experimental medicine, genomic data mining, and the utilization of experimental models, including stem cell and genetically modified mice, are suggested ways forward. Environment, including early childhood experiences, has been documented to modulate the risk for the development of psychiatric disorders via epigenetic me

Sleep and circadian disturbances in bipolar disorder are common and persistent within and between illness episodes. Insomnia, hypersomnia, reduced need for sleep, sleep schedule variability and circadian rhythm disorders are frequently observed. In this article, recent research is reviewed suggesting that the presence of sleep disturbance is associated with functional impairment, interacts with other physical and environmental systems (e.g. physical activity, light exposure), and may attenuate response to treatment. Established and emerging treatments for various sleep disturbances are reviewe

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia (SP) is a syndrome described as generalized and progressive loss of muscle mass and strength that may cause fall, fractures, disability and death. Oxidative stress might be a probable etiologic factor in SP as well. SP is a comorbid syndrome that is seen in chronic illnesses. If these two considerations are taken together, one may also think that SP could be also seen in bipolar disorder (BD), because it is a chronic disorder and oxidative stress was related to both illnesses. In our study, we proposed to investigate the prevalence of SP in BD patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Disruptions in circadian rhythms are believed to underlie the illness course of bipolar disorder (BD). This review evaluates recent studies on the treatment of circadian dysfunction in BD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Targeted social rhythm therapy may be useful for bipolar depression though some studies suggest that a non-targeted psychosocial or pharmacological intervention may be just as efficacious. Lithium holds potential for addressing circadian dysfunction in BD. Blue-blocking therapy may be useful for mania and midday bright light therapy may relieve depression.
CONCLUSIONS: P

BACKGROUND: Although lamotrigine may be useful for treating patients with treatment-resistant bipolar disorder, some lamotrigine-associated adverse effects, including mild to moderate skin rash, may prevent the continuation of treatment.
METHODS: We investigated lamotrigine rechallenge for the treatment of bipolar disorder. The present study was based on retrospective chart review of outpatients with bipolar disorder (DSM-5 criteria) who visited the hospital's psychiatric department between July 2011 and August 2017. The review revealed 12 patients with bipolar disorder who underwent lamotrig

Bipolar disorder is a chronic condition, characterized by high distress in patients and high suicide rates (30%). Most patients suffer from medical and other psychiatric comorbidities, which worsen the psychiatric symptoms and decrease the likelihood of remission. More than 70% of bipolar patients have cardio-metabolic symptoms, with higher rates compared to other psychiatric disorders. Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of high mortality rates in these patients, with 1.5-2 fold increased risk of mortality, compared to the general population without psychiatric symptoms. The rates of ca

OBJECTIVE: Approximately one-half of all patients affected by bipolar disorder present with psychotic features on at least one occasion. Several studies have found that alterations in the activity of mesolimbic and prefrontal regions are related to aberrant salience in psychotic patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate the structural correlates of a history of hallucinations in a sample of euthymic patients with bipolar I disorder (BD-I).
METHODS: The sample consisted of 21 euthymic patients with BD-I and no comorbid axis I DSM-IV-TR disorders. Voxel based morphometry (VBM) w
