Weight at birth and subsequent risk of preeclampsia as an adult.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the influence of maternal birth weight on the risk of the development of preeclampsia, a likely precursor to adult chronic disease. STUDY DESIGN: This hospital-based case-control study included 181 preeclampsia cases and 349 control subjects. Participants provided information about their birth weight and other covariates that included medical and reproductive history, prepregnancy weight, and adult height. Odds ratios and 95% CIs were estimated by logistic regression. RESULTS: The risk of preeclampsia decreased as maternal birth weight increased (P=.01). After an adjus

Heredity of hypospadias and the significance of low birth weight.

PURPOSE: We analyzed a large group of patients with hypospadias regarding familial aggregation, phenotype, twin rate and ethnic origin and assessed the correlation of low birth weight with hypospadias. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We mailed questionnaires to 2,503 boys operated on for hypospadias in Sweden asking for additional cases of hypospadias in the family, the number of brothers in the nuclear family, and birth weight of the boys with hypospadias and their brothers. RESULTS: Of the boys 7% reported 1 or more additional family members with hypospadias. The birth weight of the boys with hypos

[Maternal anemia and malnutrition and their relation to birth weight].

With a view to evaluating the effect of anemia and maternal undernourishment on birth weight, a sample of 691 pregnant women, from an assistential maternity hospital, in S. Paulo, Brazil, were studied at delivery. Anemia was found in 29.1% and undernourishment in 17.2% of the women, though no association was detected between these nutritional deficiencies. Neither was any association detected between institutional ante-natal care and anemia or undernourishment. Among single newborns the incidence of low birth weight (LBW) was of 12.9%. LBW was observed in 23.6% of children born to women who ca

The effects of maternal smoking on infant birth weight.

A prospective cohort study was designed to examine the independent effects of maternal smoking on infant birth weight adjusted for length of gestation. Obstetrical patients were enrolled from four university based family practice clinics; 772 mother-infant pairs were included in the final analyses. A multiple regression analysis found 53% of the variance in infant birth weight to be explained by length of gestation, race, pre-pregnancy weight, weight gain, gender of the infant, highest systolic blood pressure, and smoking. After adjusting for the effects of other independent variables, women w

Birth weight and survival in relation to natural selection.

Birth weight and perinatal mortality of 11,241 single born infants in Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh, South India) are studied by fitting multiple regression techniques, with the natural log of the ratio of survivors to non-survivors. The optimal birth weight values are almost 475 g above the corresponding means. Selection intensity and selective mortality are relatively high.

Impact of chorionicity on birth weight discordance in twins.

BACKGROUND: Advanced maternal age (AMA, ≥35 years) is increasing, linked to delayed childbearing and infertility, with medically assisted reproductive (MAR) technology boosting twin pregnancy rates. Birth weight discordance in twins [BWDT, birth weight discordance (∆BW) >20%] raises neonatal morbidity. Chorionicity matters: monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins face higher risks from placental anastomoses, while dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) twins have better outcomes. This study explores their association with BWDT. The aim of this study was to characterize the association of chorionicity sta

Trends and predictors of birth weight in Chilean children.

OBJECTIVES: Birth weight is an important public health indicator that reflects fetal health conditions and predicts future health. Identifying the most important factors related to birth weight would help defining preventive health strategies for both mothers and children. The objectives of this study are i. to describe, using a large birth database from a Chilean hospital, the trend of birth weight during 2002-2015, and ii. to determine factors during prenatal care associated with low and high birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a secondary analysis of all single birth records at a Chi

Effects of maternal factors on birth weight in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the possible factors related to the birth weight (BW) using the Japanese perinatal database. METHODS: The live infants born at 37 to 41 weeks of gestation were enrolled in this study. Cases with diabetic pregnancy, preeclampsia, an anomalous fetus, and a fetus with chromosomal abnormalities were excluded. A multiple regression analysis for confounding factors and an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) for comparing the BW in 2006 and 2010 were used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS: The BW significantly decreased from 2950.8 g in 2006 (n = 27,723) to 2937.5 g in 20

Effects of chorionicity and zygosity on triplet birth weight.

Birth weight in triplets is, on average, lower than in singletons and twins, and more children are classified as having very low or extremely low birth weight. Still, there is limited research on factors that affect triplet birth weight, and samples under study are often small. Chorionicity and zygosity influence triplet birth weight, but it is unknown whether the effect of zygosity can be entirely ascribed to the effect of chorionicity or whether zygosity has an additional effect on triplet birth weight. This question was investigated in 346 triplets (from 116 trios) registered with the Nethe

Hepatoblastoma in a child of extremely low birth weight.

Hepatoblastoma is a rare childhood embryonal malignancy. Recent reports suggested a linkage between premature birth and later development of hepatoblastoma. In August 2000, we encountered a 24-month-old boy with extremely low birth weight who developed hepatoblastoma with an unfavorable histology. His birth weight was only 584 g. Radiological evaluation of the liver revealed a hypoattenuated tumor occupying the left lobe. His initial serum alpha-fetoprotein level was 4032 ng/mL. The patient underwent successful left hepatectomy. The histological examination showed that the tumor, weighing 210

Birth weight as a predictor of brachial plexus injury.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between birth weight and brachial plexus injury and estimate the number of cesareans needed to reduce such injuries. METHODS: All 80 neonatal records coded for brachial plexus injury from October 1985 to September 1993 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, were studied along with linked maternal files. Birth weight, method of delivery, presence or absence of shoulder dystocia, and any diagnosis of maternal gestational or nongestational diabetes were abstracted. Data for the group with brachial plexus injury were compared with data

Recall by mothers of the birth weights and feeding of their children.

We have tested mothers' abilities to remember at a later date, the birth weight, duration of breastfeeding and time of introduction of other milks to their previous children, by comparing their recall with the information recorded by the nursing sisters at maternal and child health clinics at the time. Data were available for 81 children with present ages from 1 to 10 years. Birth weight and the duration of breast feeding were generally remembered accurately, but there were large discrepancies on the time of starting other milk feeds. This could pose diagnostic difficulties in some paediatric

How to survive a periviable birth baby with birth weight of 450g: A case report.

RATIONALE: An increasing number of periviable birth newborns (PVBs) have emerged with concurrent growing high-risk pregnancy. To date, postnatal management of PVBs remains one of the most challenging issues and limited studies have been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A female baby born at 230/7 weeks of gestation with birth weight of 450g. DIAGNOSIS: PVB baby, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), metabolic bone disease of prematurity (MBDP), transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity (THOP), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD
