An examination of emotion regulation as a mechanism underlying eating disorder pathology in lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) individuals generally experience eating disorders at higher rates than heterosexual individuals. While there is limited research examining why LGB individuals experience higher levels of eating pathology, emotion regulation (ER) deficits have been associated with higher rates of other forms of psychopathology in this population. The present study examined the impact of specific ER deficits on the relationship between LGB status and eating pathology. We hypothesized that 1) LGB individuals would report higher levels of ER deficits, and 2) ER deficits

Associations of race and ethnicity with tobacco messaging exposures and tobacco use among bisexual and pansexual women.

Within the lesbian and bisexual community, bisexual women have the highest prevalence of tobacco use, and Black and Latina women are much more likely to use tobacco than their heterosexual peers. Research on tobacco use among bisexual women is limited to descriptions of prevalence in this population. We evaluated associations between race/ethnicity, exposure to pro- and anti-tobacco messages, and tobacco use outcomes among bisexual and pansexual women. We recruited a sample of N = 382 bisexual and pansexual women in the United States using the online survey platform, Prolific. Participants rep

The influence of minority stress on indicators of suicidality among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults in Thailand.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Established research from the United States and other Western countries has found that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) populations are at an elevated risk for suicide. Suicidality among LGBT individuals is understudied in Thailand and other Asian countries, warranting additional research to better understand risk factors and to create effective treatment and suicide prevention interventions. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The study examined rates and predictors of suicidality in Thai LGBT adults. Study findings suggest that

GPS: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Sexual Health Counseling for Gay and Bisexual Men Living With HIV.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) continue to have high rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis. GBM have therefore been identified by public health agencies as a high-priority population to reach with prevention initiatives. Despite the importance of mental health in preventing HIV and related infections, there is a shortage of credentialed mental health professionals to deliver behavioral Counseling interventions. The current study evaluated the efficacy of GPS, a community-based and peer-delivered sexual health promotion motivational inter

Changes in Sleep Quality and Associated Health Outcomes among Gay and Bisexual Men Living with HIV.

Objectives/Background: Although gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV in the U.S., they are underrepresented in HIV-related sleep research. This study sought to (a) investigate changes in self-reported sleep quality among a sample of GBMSM living with HIV during participation in an online sexual risk reduction intervention and (b) examine whether changes in sleep quality predicted later health outcomes.Method/Participants: Men (n = 505) completed measures of sleep quality, psychological distress, condom use self-efficacy, and antiretro

HIV Risk and Prevention Outcomes in a Probability-Based Sample of Gay and Bisexual Men in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Although gay and bisexual men (GBM) represent the largest group of HIV-infected individuals in the United States, nearly all evidence on their HIV risk and prevention outcomes derive from nonprobability samples. SETTING: A probability-based cohort of GBM (N = 502) from 45 states and Washington, DC. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: Among HIV-negative/unknown/untested GBM, only 6.7% reported using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the past 6 months. Two-thirds (63.3%) of PrEP users reported daily adherence in the past week. Over half (54.2%) of GBM reported not using a c

HIV-related syndemic pathways and risk subjectivities among gay and bisexual men: a qualitative investigation.

Life history interviews were conducted with 40 gay and bisexual men to identify modes of syndemic experience and risk practice. Out of the interview narratives emerged one major and two minor modes of developmental pathway whereby syndemic conditions are navigated and expressed: (1) a combination of adverse childhood events with later episodes of depression and/or substantial substance use; (2) personal disruption that led to periods of depression and anxiety associated with the stresses of migration; and (3) a disorientation and an unravelling of life trajectory in the transition from family

In Australia, Most HIV Infections Among Gay and Bisexual Men are Attributable to Sex with 'New' Partners.

It has been estimated that the majority of global HIV infections among gay and bisexual men (GBM) can be attributed to sex within a committed relationship. In Australia, however, negotiated safety, whereby HIV-negative regular partners agree to discard condoms with each other but commit to consistent condom use with other partners, has been promoted as a key component of the HIV prevention response. We asked GBM recently diagnosed with HIV to describe their relationship to the person they believed to be the source of their infection ('source person'). The majority (66.1%) ascribed their infect

A longitudinal study of persistent smoking among HIV-positive gay and bisexual men in primary relationships.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the stability of smoking behaviors, and factors associated with persistent smoking in a longitudinal study of HIV-positive gay and bisexual men in primary relationships. METHODS: A sample of 377 HIV-positive men on antiretroviral therapy and their same-sex partners completed five assessments over two years. Participants completed semi-structured interviews which assessed smoking status, sociodemographic factors, relationship dynamics, and HIV-related disease characteristics. Latent transition analysis estimated the amount of transition in smoking over time. Latent cl

Exploring the Perceptions of Anal Cancer Screening and Behaviors Among Gay and Bisexual Men Infected With HIV.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of anal cancer is on the rise among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM). Given the increasing availability of screening, this study explored anal cancer screening awareness and behaviors among MSM infected with HIV. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 58 MSM infected with HIV. RESULTS: Other than 2 participants treated for anal cancer and 3 treated for precancerous anal lesions, the majority of participants had never heard of anal cancer. Men reported lack of awareness and recommendations from their health care professionals as the greatest bar

Sexual assault, drinking norms, and drinking behavior among a national sample of lesbian and bisexual women.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adolescent/adult sexual assault (ASA) are strongly associated with women's alcohol use and the rates of both alcohol use and sexual assault history are higher among lesbian and bisexual women than heterosexual women. Although descriptive drinking norms are one of the highest predictors of alcohol use in emerging adults, this is the first study to examine the relationship between sexual assault history, drinking norms, and alcohol use in lesbian and bisexual women. We found that CSA severity was associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing more severe alc

Methodological quality of quantitative lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender nursing research from 2000 to 2010.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methodological quality of quantitative lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender nursing research from 2000 to 2010. Using a key word search in Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, 188 studies were identified and 40 met the criteria, which included descriptive, experimental, quasi-experimental, or observational (case control, cohort, and cross-sectional) design. The methodological quality of these studies was similar to that reported for medical and nursing educational research. The foci of these lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adolescent school victimization: implications for young adult health and adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent school victimization due to lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) status is commonplace, and is associated with compromised health and adjustment. Few studies have examined the long-term implications of LGBT school victimization for young adult adjustment. We examine the association between reports of LGBT school victimization and young adult psychosocial health and risk behavior. METHODS: The young adult survey from the Family Acceptance Project included 245 LGBT young adults between the ages of 21 and 25 years, with an equal proportion of Latino and non-Latino

Barriers to optimal care between physicians and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning adolescent patients.

The objective of this article was to identify barriers to optimal care between physicians and LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) adolescents. To this end, 464 anonymous, self-administered surveys were distributed in 2003 to residents and attending physicians in pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry, emergency medicine, and family practice at Upstate Medical University. The survey included questions pertaining to practice, knowledge, and attitude pertaining to lesbian, gay, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) adolescents. One hundred eight fo

Childhood abuse and mental health indicators among ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research has established that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people experience higher rates of childhood abuse than heterosexuals. However, there has been little research on the mental health impact of these experiences or how race/ethnicity might influence prevalence and mental health impact of childhood abuse in this population. The study's objective was to examine the relationships between race/ethnicity, childhood abuse, and mental health indicators in a national sample of LGB adults. METHOD: Participants were recruited via the Internet through snowball and targeted sam

Coping, drug use, and religiosity/spirituality in relation to HIV serostatus among gay and bisexual men.

Cross-sectional data were collected on a sample of 259 gay and bisexual, male-identified individuals as part of a larger study of the psychosocial functioning of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. Analyses considered differences between HIV-positive and HIV-negative men in relation to active and religious coping strategies; avoidant coping strategies (specifically, illicit drug use); and the psychosocial states of anxiety, hostility, and depression in relation to self-reported HIV-status of the participants. As compared with HIV-negative men, the HIV positive participants indicat
