Can blood progesterone concentration identify non-pregnant buffaloes to support oestrous resynchronization?

This study compared the plasma progesterone concentrations from pregnant and non-pregnant buffaloes to identify non-pregnant females and submit cows earlier to oestrous resynchronization. Forty-four multiparous mix-breed Murrah buffaloes were selected for the study. The cows were subjected to hormonal oestrous synchronization and separated into 4 groups, P12 (pregnant, n = 8) and P18 (n = 8) at 12 and 18 days post-insemination; NP12 (non-pregnant, n = 7) and NP18 (n = 7) at 23 and 29 days after the onset of synchronization, respectively. The embryos and blood were collected, and the plasma was

Allogenic adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells are effective than antibiotics in treating endometritis.

Endometritis is a uterine inflammatory disease that causes reduced livestock fertility, milk production and lifespan leading to significant economic losses to the dairy industry. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) may act as an alternative for inefficacy of antibiotics and rising antibiotic resistance in endometritis. The present study aimed to cure the chronic endometritic buffaloes using allogenic adipose-derived MSCs (AD-MSC). AD-MSCs were isolated from buffalo adipose tissue and characterized by multilineage differentiation as well as MSC-specific markers. The in vivo safety and efficacy were as

Anatomical, histological, and histochemical alterations in portio vaginalis uteri with an evaluation of the vaginal artery vascularity during the luteal and early pregnant stages in domestic buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis).

The portio-vaginalis uteri (PVU) and its mucus secretion have shown an essential role in conception. A significant endeavour to improve buffaloes' reproductive efficiency is the investigation of their basic reproductive pattern, which provides a reference for applications in breeding and pregnancy. The present study aimed to evaluate the anatomical and histological alterations in PVU regarding to the vaginal artery (VA) hemodynamic at luteal and early pregnant stages in buffalos. Egyptian live buffaloes (n = 16) and fresh genitals (n = 25) of mature buffalo were used. Different luteal and earl

Assessment of an open-access CASA software for bovine and buffalo sperm motility analysis.

The aim of this study was to verify the reliability of an open access CASA software (BGM) to evaluate the sperm motility of cattle and buffalo, comparing motility and kinematic parameters to those of a commercial one (HTM). Thirty frozen-thawed samples for each species were analyzed with both HTM and BGM, after 1 h of incubation at 37 °C. Sperm viability and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were evaluated through flow cytometric analysis. Agreement of all motility variables between the two systems was assessed. Correlation analysis was performed to identify relationships between motion p

Clinical impressions of anthrax from the 2006 outbreak in Saskatchewan.

Clinical signs and carcass traits observed during the 2006 Saskatchewan anthrax outbreak were largely consistent with those previously published, except for cutaneous anthrax and anthrax mastitis in cows, and subcutaneous edema in bulls and horses. Failure of blood to clot was the most reliable indicator of anthrax in carcasses.

Evaluation of Brucella abortus strain RB51 and strain 19 in pronghorn antelope.

Free-roaming elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area remain the only wildlife reservoirs for Brucella abortus in the United States, and the large number of animals and a lack of holding facilities make it unreasonable to individually vaccinate each animal. Therefore, oral delivery is being proposed as a possible option to vaccinate these wild ungulates. One of the main problems associated with oral vaccination is the potential exposure of nontarget species to the vaccines. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two Brucella vaccines, strain 19 (S19) and the rough strai

Evolutionary Pattern of Interferon Alpha Genes in Bovidae and Genetic Diversity of IFNAA in the Bovine Genome.

Interferons are secretory proteins induced in response to specific extracellular stimuli which stimulate intra- and intercellular networks for regulating innate and acquired immunity, resistance to viral infections, and normal and tumor cell survival and death. Type 1 interferons plays a major role in the CD8 T-cell response to viral infection. The genomic analysis carried out here for type I interferons within Bovidae family shows that cattle, bison, water buffalo, goat, and sheep (all Bovidae), have different number of genes of the different subtypes, with a large increase in the numbers, co

Unraveling the relationships between midge abundance and incidence, microbial communities, and soil and water properties in a protected natural tallgrass prairie.

BACKGROUND: Biting midges (Culicoides spp.) are small blood-feeding flies (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) that transmit numerous pathogens that impact animal and human health. The larvae of several Culicoides spp., including vectors, are often found in organically enriched, moist soil habitats. However, the influence of biotic (e.g., cohabiting fauna, potential prey taxa) and abiotic factors (e.g., soil or water properties, time) on abundance and incidence of larval Culicoides in natural habitats is not well understood. This study evaluated the relationships between bacterial and protistan communit

Supplementation with long-acting injectable progesterone 3 days after TAI impaired luteal function in buffaloes.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of long-acting injectable progesterone (iP4) in buffalo cows. In Experiment 1, ovariectomized buffaloes received 300 mg (iP300) or 600 mg (iP600) of iP4, and serum P4 concentrations were evaluated. In experiment 2, three groups were compared: control or administration of 300 mg of iP4 3 (iP4-D3) or 6 days (iP4-D6) after timed artificial insemination (TAI). On day 16, reproductive tract was recovered for conceptus, endometrium, and corpus luteum (CL) analysis. In experiment 3, pregnancy per AI (P/TAI) and proportion of pregnancy losses we

Molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis of Toxocara vitulorum in feces and milk samples from naturally infected water buffaloes.

Toxocara vitulorum infects cattle and water buffalo, leading to mild to severe infection in calves and has wide geographic distributions, especially in tropical and subtropical countries. This work aimed to assess the prevalence, distributions, and phylogeny of T.vitulorum in water buffaloes in different parts of Sivas, one of the essential buffalo-breeding areas in Türkiye. T.vitulorum was found in 42 (8.23%) and 54 (10.58%) fecal (n:510) samples using microscopic and molecular techniques, respectively. T.vitulorum was higher in animals aged 0-6 months compared to other groups. Furthermore, w

Case of the month: Buffalo chest: a case of bilateral pneumothoraces due to pleuropleural communication.

Simultaneous spontaneous bilateral pneumothoraces, the presentation of separate right and left pneumothoraces together, is a rare event. The pleural cavities in humans are separated completely and the only previous reports of pleuropleural communication have been associated with major invasive thoracic procedures, specifically mediastinal surgery. The term "buffalo chest" has been coined for the condition on the basis that the buffalo or bison has a single pleural cavity, one of the few mammals to do so. We present the case of a woman with a past history of a single right sided spontaneous pne

Molecular characterization and serodiagnostic evaluation of the Echinococcus ortleppi recombinant glutaredoxin 1 protein for cystic echinococcosis in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), adversely affects the physiology of the vital organs in which they grow. Condemnation of meat causes substantial economic loss to the livestock industry. Conventionally the infection is detected by necropsy as serological diagnosis of the infection in livestock is ambiguous. Identification of specific diagnostic antigens would be a substitute for the cyst fluid antigens which lack adequate diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. BLAST analysis supported by the negligible pairwise nucleotide dist

Effect of primary and secondary Fasciola gigantica infection on specific IgG responses, hepatic enzyme levels and weight gain in buffaloes.

Buffaloes, as highly susceptible definitive hosts of Fasciola gigantica, suffer from a high infection rate of fasciolosis, which causes enormous economic losses. Repeat infection is responsible for this high rate; thus, elucidating the protective immunity mechanism in repeat infection is decisive in fasciolosis prevention. Herein, a secondary experimental infection model was established to preliminarily reveal the protective immunity that occurs in repeat infection. In brief, animals were assigned to three groups: group A (uninfected control), group B (primary infection) and group C (secondary

The ecology of anthrax spores: tough but not invincible.

Bacillus anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax, a serious and often fatal disease of wild and domestic animals. Central to the persistence of anthrax in an area is the ability of B. anthracis to form long-lasting, highly resistant spores. Understanding the ecology of anthrax spores is essential if one hopes to control epidemics. Studies on the ecology of anthrax have found a correlation between the disease and specific soil factors, such as alkaline pH, high moisture, and high organic content. Researchers initially suggested that these factors influenced vegetative anthrax bacilli. Howev

Bilateral pneumothorax after pacemaker placement "Buffalo chest".

Bilateral pneumothoraces following unilateral subclavian vein cannulation is a rare complication. It is usually associated with an intrapleural communication which can be congenital or formed following cardiothoracic and mediastinal surgeries, or trauma. The term Buffalo chest was used to define a single chest cavity with no anatomic separation of the two hemithoraces. It is called Buffalo chest because this unique chest anatomy of the American buffalo, or bison, helped hunters to kill them with a single arrow to the chest because the resultant pneumothorax could collapse both lungs. In distin

Bilateral Pneumothoraces Following BiV ICD Placement: A Case of Buffalo Chest Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Contralateral pneumothorax following device implantation on the left side has been reported in a few cases. The majority of contralateral pneumothoraces showed evidence of atrial perforation on computed tomography (CT), echocardiography, or chest x-rays and required lead revision. To the best of our knowledge there is only 1 other reported case of contralateral pneumothorax without evidence of macro-displacement of the atrial lead. In that case the patient experienced a right-sided pneumothorax on day 1 after undergoing repositioning of the atrial lead. CASE REPORT: The current ca

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in water buffaloes and cats in Guangxi, China.

Toxoplasma gondii is a pathogen that poses a serious threat to human health and causes significant economic losses to the global livestock industry. The prevalence of toxoplasmosis infection has been reported to be high in humans and animals around the world, but the occurrence of the disease has not yet been reported in water buffaloes in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. To understand the overall seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in Guangxi, a total of 1041 water buffalo and 114 cat serum samples were examined using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA).
