Tick infestation and occurrence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and piroplasms in cattle in the Republic of Serbia.

Ticks transmit important pathogens affecting cattle such as intracellular bacteria of the genus Anaplasma or protozoa of the order Piroplasmida. This study aimed at assessing tick species present on pastures and cattle and determining occurrence of the tick-borne pathogens Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia spp. in cattle. During May and June 2013, ticks and EDTA blood were collected from 185 dairy cows at six locations in Serbia. Ticks were also collected directly from the pastures at four of these locations. The occurrence of A. phagocytophilum was investigated by serological (immunofluor

Are there other undiagnosed tick-borne infections in children being evaluated for Lyme neuroborreliosis?

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing amount of reported clinical cases of emerging tick-borne diseases (eTBDs) such as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, neoehrlichiosis, babesiosis and rickettsiosis. The incidence of eTBDs in children is rather unknown, potentially due to low awareness regarding these diseases among health professionals. The clinical picture may be unspecific and access to laboratory tests limited. We aimed to investigate the incidence and clinical manifestations of eTBDs, including possible co-infections, within a pediatric patient group evaluated for Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB)

Risk factors for blood exposure accidents and their reporting in dentistry in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Oral healthcare practitioners (OHCPs) face risks for blood-borne viruses following blood exposure accidents (BEAs). AIM: This study aimed to investigate occupational BEAs in Dutch oral healthcare clinics, explore BEA risk factors, and identify reasons for non-reporting. METHODS: Two questionnaires were distributed: one prospective questionnaire was sent to BEA reporters who contacted a nationally operating reporting centre for occupational BEAs (issued before and after European legislation on recapping), and a retrospective questionnaire was sent to clinics which did not report a

The Comparative Study for Detection of Canine Vector-Borne Pathogens Between Companion and Stray Dogs in Bangkok and Vicinities, Thailand.

This study investigated the prevalence and molecular characteristics of canine vector-borne pathogens (CVBPs) circulating in diverse dog populations in Thailand by using molecular diagnostic methods. A total of 400 blood samples were collected from four groups (n = 100 each): stray dogs (Group A), vector-borne disease-suspected companion dogs (Group B), healthy companion dogs presenting for routine examination (Group C), and companion dogs presenting with non-vector-borne illnesses (Group D). The overall infection rate was 46.25%. Ehrlichia spp. were the most frequently detected pathogens (23.

Epidemiological Significance of the Fox (Vulpes vulpes) in the Spread of Vector-Transmitted Zoonoses in the Area of Northern Croatia.

Wild animals often serve as reservoirs for vector-borne zoonoses, which are on the rise worldwide but have not yet been sufficiently researched. Vector-borne zoonoses, such as those caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and Dirofilaria immitis, are a growing public health concern due to their increasing incidence and broad host range. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for vector-borne bacterial (borreliosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis) and parasitic (dirofilariasis) pathogens and to detect some of these pathogens in the red f

[Mosquitoes as vectors for exotic pathogens in Germany].

As a result of intensified globalization of international trade and of substantial travel activities, mosquito-borne exotic pathogens are becoming an increasing threat for Europe. In Germany some 50 different mosquito species are known, several of which have vector competence for pathogens. During the last few years a number of zoonotic arboviruses that are pathogenic for humans have been isolated from mosquitoes in Germany including Usutu, Sindbis and Batai viruses. In addition, filarial worms, such as Dirofilaria repens have been repeatedly detected in mosquitoes from the federal state of Br

PCR detection and genetic characterization of piroplasms from dogs in Myanmar, and a possible role of dogs as reservoirs for Theileria parasites infecting cattle, water buffaloes, and goats.

Canine vector-borne pathogens can act as zoonotic agents in humans; however, it poorly understood whether dogs play a role as reservoirs of vector-borne parasites in livestock animals. Here, we report the unexpected detection of 18S rRNA gene (rDNA) sequences of five ruminant Theileria species from the peripheral blood of dogs in Myanmar, in addition to those of two canine Babesia species. Using novel BTH primers capable of amplifying the 18S rDNA of Babesia, Theileria, and Hepatozoon spp., approximately 1,500 bp nested PCR products were detected in 19% (17/91) of local or imported dog breeds

Hospital solid waste management strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections from occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and improve occupational safety.

Improving occupational safety and public health is crucial to reducing nosocomial infections in healthcare workers due to the ongoing deficiencies in solid waste management in private clinics. For this reason, it is necessary to implement appropriate solid waste management practices to mitigate risks for clinical staff, patients, and the environment. This research focused on reducing the risk of nosocomial infections in healthcare workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens. It was carried out at the private clinic and concentrated on properly managing hospital solid waste, with special attention

Sharps management and the disposal of clinical waste.

Dangerous errors in clinical waste management continue to occur and inappropriate items find their way into clinical waste sacks that are not designed to hold sharp or heavy items, or fluids. Although great attention is given to the safe use of sharps, needles still find their way into waste sacks instead of a sharps bin. Sharps injuries among ancillary and support staff, and waste handlers working in the disposal sector, can occur at a rate greater than for health-care staff. Blood and body fluid exposures from carelessly packaged clinical waste are similarly common, with almost 100% of waste

IrSPI, a tick serine protease inhibitor involved in tick feeding and Bartonella henselae infection.

Ixodes ricinus is the most widespread and abundant tick in Europe, frequently bites humans, and is the vector of several pathogens including those responsible for Lyme disease, Tick-Borne Encephalitis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis and bartonellosis. These tick-borne pathogens are transmitted to vertebrate hosts via tick saliva during blood feeding, and tick salivary gland (SG) factors are likely implicated in transmission. In order to identify such tick factors, we characterized the transcriptome of female I. ricinus SGs using next generation sequencing techniques, and compared transcriptomes betw

Mapping experiences of workplace stigma and discrimination within the lived-living experience of illicit drug use and bloodborne virus peer workforce: a scoping review.

Peer workers with lived-living experience of illicit drug use and/or bloodborne viruses are critical in linking community with health services and programs. Despite the increasing demand for, and recognition of, the value and contributions of peer workers, the risk of workplace stigma and discrimination due to their lived-living experience remains a persistent issue. This scoping review aims to map available literature about workplace stigma and discrimination against peer workers with lived-living experience of drug use or bloodborne virus. The methods used in this scoping review were guided

Minimizing Medical Error-Related Adverse Events With Platelet-Rich Plasma: A Protocolized Approach to Safety.

Platelet-rich concentrates (PRCs), derived from a patient's blood, are being used in various fields of medicine, including dermatology, for an increasing number of indications. Although considered a generally safe procedure for dermatologic indications, there have been reports in the last several years linking this treatment to cases of blood-borne infections including HIV and hepatitis.1 Patient safety should always be the primary focus for physicians and other health care professionals, and systems-based protocols should exist within care settings to minimize errors. Herein, we review our pr

Platelet Transfusion and Thrombosis: More Questions than Answers.

Platelets perform a vital role in hemostasis and their role in inflammation is becoming increasingly evident. Blood transfusion is the most common procedure performed in hospitals and platelet transfusions comprise a significant proportion. Over the past few decades, retrospective studies and randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that blood transfusion is more harmful than previously thought and is associated with numerous complications, such as transfusion-associated lung injury, transfusion-associated cardiac overload, transfusion-associated immune modulation, and infectious diseases
