Febrile convulsion (FC) is the most common seizure disease in children, which occurs with a fever. We investigated the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data of patients aged between 6 months and 5 years at the time of FC diagnosis. Diseases that can cause seizures with fever, such as neoplasms, metabolic disorders, nervous system disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, perinatal problems, and congenital abnormalities, were excluded. Weekly virus-positive detection rate (PDR) data were obtained from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency for adenovirus, parainfluenza

Respiratory viral infection is a common disease even among immunocompetent individuals. Moreover, approximately 40% of the hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients suffer from a respiratory infection within 100 days after HCT. New respiratory viruses have been continuously identified in the past 20 years, such as new strains of coronaviruses (CoV), human metapneumovirus (HMPV), and human bocavirus (BoV). In 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 that caused the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic was identified. The 30-day overall survival after lower r

BACKGROUND: Many chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients recall an upper respiratory tract infection as the inciting event of their chronic illness. Viral infections have been shown to cause obstruction of the osteomeatal complex, which is likely to be a critical step in the development of CRS. There is clear overlap between the pathogenesis of CRS and asthma. Infections with respiratory viruses in childhood increase the risk of subsequently developing asthma. Viral infections in established asthmatics are associated with acute exacerbations. We sought to determine whether respiratory viruses co

This retrospective study, conducted between September 2023 and October 2025, evaluated age-related pathogen prevalence, seasonal dynamics, and Cycle threshold (Ct) values in nasopharyngeal specimens from hospitalized subjects with suspected acute respiratory infections (ARIs) using the multiplex syndromic panel. A median-based Delta Ct was calculated to define pathogen dominance in co-detections. A total of 2479 nasopharyngeal swabs were analyzed and 54.4% tested positive for at least one pathogen. Overall, the positivity rate and co-detections were found to be significantly higher in pediatri

Early detection of outbreaks and emerging pathogens is critical for public health and global biosecurity. Airports, as major international travel hubs with dense, enclosed populations, are high-risk settings for disease transmission and potential pathogen introduction. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with Ginkgo Biosecurity and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, implemented air monitoring for pathogen surveillance in congregate areas at four U.S. international airports. From October 2023 to August 2024, SARS-CoV-2 was detected by PCR in 98.3% of air samp

Human adenovirus (HAdV) cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections. However, there are few large prospective studies focused on HAdVs acute infections requiring hospitalization. From 2005 to 2013 a prospective study was conducted on children admitted with acute respiratory infections. Specimens of nasopharyngeal aspirate were taken for virological study by PCR and clinical data was recorded. HAdV specimens were genotyped. Frequency and clinical course of HAdV infections were compared with RSV, rhinovirus (RV), human bocavirus (HBoV) and influenza in the same population. HAdV was detect

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The first era in the discoveries of respiratory viruses occured between 1933 and 1965 when influenza virus, enteroviruses, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus and coronavirus (CoV) were found by virus culture. In the 1990s, the development of high throughput viral detection and diagnostics instruments increased diagnostic sensitivity and enabled the search for new viruses. This article briefly reviews the clinical significance of newly discovered respiratory viruses.
RECENT FINDINGS: In 2001, the second era in the discoveries of respirat

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted the trend of influenza and respiratory virus infections, leading to substantial changes in their seasonal patterns. This study aimed to describe the impact of COVID-19 on the pattern of respiratory virus infections by analyzing the trend (such as detection rate) of respiratory pathogens in patients with respiratory symptoms who visited sentinel sites and by examining the surveillance results of inpatient surveillance at general hospitals. The analysis covers a 3-year period before the COVID-19 outbreak (2017–2019) and

INTRODUCTION: Wheezing is a major problem in children, and respiratory viruses are often believed to be the causative agent. While molecular detection tools enable identification of respiratory viruses in wheezing children, it remains unclear if and how these viruses are associated with wheezing. The objective of this systematic review is to clarify the prevalence of different respiratory viruses in children with wheezing.
METHODS: We performed an electronic in Pubmed and Global Index Medicus on 01 July 2019 and manual search. We performed search of studies that have detected common respirato

Respiratory viral infections, particularly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus, are the most importance risk factors for the onset of wheezing in infants and small children. Bronchiolitis is the most common acute respiratory infection in children under 1year of age, and the most common cause of hospitalization in this age group. RSV accounts for approximately 70% of all these cases, followed by rhinovirus, adenovirus, metapneumovirus and bocavirus. The association between bronchiolitis caused by RSV and the development of recurrent wheezing and/or asthma was first described more t

Atypical pneumonia was first described in 1938, and over time, Mycoplasma, Legionella, and Chlamydophila were the agents commonly linked with community-associated atypical pneumonia. However, as technology has improved, so has our understanding of this clinical entity. It is now known that there are many agents linked with atypical pneumonia in the community, and many of these agents are also major causes of healthcare-associated pneumonia. This article discusses the history, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of infection; control of infection; clinical findings; diagnosis; and, where applicable,

Viral bivalve contamination is a recognized food safety hazard. Therefore, this study investigated the detection rates, seasonality, quantification, and genetic diversity of enteric viruses in bivalve samples (mussels and oysters). We collected 97 shellfish samples between March 2018 and February 2020. The screening of samples by qPCR or RT-qPCR revealed the detection of norovirus (42.3%), rotavirus A (RVA; 16.5%), human adenovirus (HAdV; 24.7%), and human bocavirus (HBoV; 13.4%). There was no detection of hepatitis A virus. In total, 58.8% of shellfish samples tested positive for one or more

Poliovirus (PV) is typically transmitted by the fecal-oral route, which means that the risk of infection and virus distribution could be achieved by exposure to the virus contaminated in food and water. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of PV strains by detecting the virus in pediatric patients who admitted to the hospitals with diarrhea in Chiang Mai, Thailand during 2010-2015. By applying a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing analysis of 1,300 stool specimens collected from pediatric patients, PVs were detected at 0.61% (8 out of 1,30
