This work describes and presents results from a new three-dimensional whole-body model of human thermoregulation. The model has been implemented using a version of the "Brooks Man" anatomical data set, consisting of 1.3x10(8) cubic volume elements (voxels) measuring 0.2 cm/side. The model simulates thermoregulation through passive mechanisms (metabolism, blood flow, respiration, and transpiration) and active mechanisms (vasodilatation, vasoconstriction, sweating, and shivering). Compared with lumped or compartment models, a voxel model is capable of high spatial resolution and can capture a le

Our objective was to characterise sweat rate responses in a hot environment during rest and subsequent increasing levels of exercise in relation to thermometrically (i.e., rectal, tympanic, mean skin and mean body temperatures) and calorimetrically derived (i.e., change in body heat storage) thermal parameters. Ten healthy males volunteered and entered an environmental chamber set at 42 degrees C. Participants rested seated during their first hour inside the chamber. Thereafter, they exercised to volitional exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at 20 W with step increments of 20 W h(-1). Across time

A variety of conditions that result in the elevation of body temperature are described and discussed. These hyperthermias are divided into four categories; fever, exercise hyperthermia, hyperthermias due to inadequate means of heat dissipation, and hyperthermias resulting from pathological or pharmacological impairments of thermoregulatory mechanisms. A comparison of the physical and physiological characteristics of these hyperthermias is presented and distinctions are drawn on the basis of these characteristics. Fever is shown to differ markedly from all other forms of hyperthermias. Specific

OBJECTIVES: Performing chest compressions in high-temperature environments may increase the physiological strain on rescuers, potentially affecting the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This study aimed to examine the effects of environmental temperature on physiological responses, perceived exertion, and chest compression performance.
METHODS: Twenty male participants performed 10 minutes of chest compressions under 2 temperature conditions: 35°C (HOT) and 25°C (CON). Physiological parameters, including rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperature, heart rate (HR), and rating of

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of pre-cooling and cooling breaks on thermoregulatory, hydration and running responses in football (soccer) players in moderate and hot temperatures.
METHODS: Forty male youth footballers participated in at least two of four matches, during which core body temperature (Tcore), heart rate (HR), match running, hydration and perceptual responses were measured. Cooling breaks (CBs), consisting of ice-cold towels and drinks, were compared to drinking breaks (DBs), consisting of passive rest and a temperate drink, applied at the same timeframes. Both wer

Athletes with tetraplegia may experience marked hyperthermia while exercising under environmental heat stress due to their limited ability to dissipate heat through evaporative means. This study investigated the effectiveness of two external cooling strategies (i.e., spraying water onto the body surface or using a cooling vest) on physiological and perceptual variables in tetraplegic athletes during and after an aerobic exercise session in a hot environment. Nine male wheelchair rugby players performed an incremental test to determine their maximum aerobic power output. After that, they were s

With global warming, much attention has been paid to the upper limits of human adaptability. However, the time to reach a generally accepted core temperature criterion (40.2°C) associated with heat-related illness above (uncompensable heat stress) and just below (compensable heat stress) the upper limits for heat balance remains unclear. Forty-eight (22 men/26 women; 23 ± 4 yr) subjects were exposed to progressive heat stress in an environmental chamber during minimal activity (MinAct, 159 ± 34 W) and light ambulation (LightAmb, 260 ± 55 W) in warm-humid (WH; ∼35°C, >60% RH) and hot-dry (HD; 4

1. Respiratory frequency, shivering, ear skin temperatures and rectal temperatures were observed following intraventricular injections of noradrenaline (NA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and saline (NaCl) into new-born lambs exposed to ambient temperatures of 4, 21, or 30 degrees C. 2. Intraventricular NA caused respiratory rate to decrease and body temperature to increase in the 30 degrees C environment. At 21 degrees C, it increased ear skin temperature but did not significantly affect rectal temperature. At 4 degrees C, NA decreased shivering and rectal temperature fell. 3. 5-HT elevated resp

Oral administration of sucralose has been reported to stimulate food intake through inducing hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY) in mice and fruit flies. However, the underlying mechanisms of action of sucralose in hypothermia and NPY and monoamine regulation remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate central effects of sucralose on body temperature, NPY, and monoamine regulation, as well as its peripheral effects, in chicks. In Experiment 1, 5-day-old chicks were centrally injected with 1 μmol of sucralose, other sweeteners (erythritol and glucose), or saline. In Experiment

Whether the human thermoregulation mechanism in response to environmental temperature stimuli originates from learning or evolution remains an intriguing research question. Body temperature regulation depends not only on innate temperature sensation but also on acquired conditioning. Maintaining body temperature is essential for homeostasis, and the brain coordinates this process through a network of interconnected regulatory systems. In this review, we discuss how humans perceive temperature and establish thermoregulatory mechanisms at birth. We also propose an acquired connectivity structure

Anticholinesterase (antiChE) agents can be highly toxic to birds and mammals and constitute a major proportion of the pesticides used throughout the world. AntiChEs consist of the organophosphates (OP), which irreversibly inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and the carbamates (CB), which reversibly inhibit AChE. AChE inhibition elicits cholinergic stimulation in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues and organs, which can lead to marked dysfunction of homeostatic systems, including temperature regulation. The control of body temperature uses cholinergic pathways in th

Ectothermic vertebrates develop behavioral fever in response to bacterial products, with potential corresponding metabolic costs associated with immune stimulation. Although behavioral fever has been described in several taxa under laboratory conditions, some important questions regarding metabolic response to bacterial products at different temperatures and effectiveness of behavioral fever remain open. Many ectotherms, such as nocturnal anurans, may be active in the field at environmental conditions that restrict thermoregulation during the immune response. How does the metabolic response to

BACKGROUND: Prehospital care for cold-stressed and hypothermic patients focuses on effective insulation and rewarming. When encountering patients wearing wet clothing, rescuers can either remove the wet clothing before isolating the patient or isolate the patient using a vapor barrier. Wet clothing removal increases skin exposure but avoids the need to heat the wet clothing during rewarming. Leaving wet clothing on will avoid skin exposure but is likely to increase heat loss during rewarming. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of wet clothing removal compared to containing the moisture us

The present work was undertaken to determine the effect of atmospheric pressure [ranging from a high altitude of 4,300 m above sea level or 0.6 atmospheres absolute (ATA) to depths of 10 m deep or 2 ATA] on the critical water temperature (Tcw), defined as the lowest water temperature a subject can tolerate at rest for 2 h without shivering, of the unprotected subject during water immersion. Nine healthy males wearing only shorts were subjected to immersion to the neck in water at 0.6, 1, and 2 ATA while resting for 2 h. Continuous measurements included esophageal (Tes) and skin (Tsk) temperatu

The Authors after a description about the thermoregulation processes and after having considered the tolerance of the human body to the thermic stress, point out the dangers of the exposure to the high or low temperatures in some labour conditions and, in particular; in the aerospace ambient. A great importance is attached to the method of prediction of individual tolerance to varied temperatures. Lastly the Authors discuss the prevention and treatment of heat-stroke and of frost-bite.

Compromised heat loss due to limited convection and evaporation can increase thermal strain. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of ice slurry ingestion to reduce thermal strain following hyperthermia in a state of compromised heat loss. Twelve healthy males (age: 25 ± 4y) underwent hot water immersion to elevate rectal temperature (Trec) by 1.82 ± 0.08°C on four occasions. In the subsequent 60-min of seated recovery, participants ingested either 6.8 g·kg-1 of ice slurry (-0.6°C) or control drink (37°C) in ambient conditions (21 ± 1°C, 39 ± 10% relative humidity), wearing either t-shirt an

Women continue to be under-represented in thermoregulatory research despite their undergoing unique physiological changes across the lifespan. This study investigated the biophysical, thermo-physiological, and perceptual determinants of cool-seeking behaviour during exercise in younger and older women. Eleven younger (25 ± 5 years; 1.7 ± 0.1 m; 63.1 ± 5.2 kg) and 11 older women (53 ± 6 years; 1.7 ± 0.1 m; 65.4 ± 13.9 kg) performed a 40-min incremental cycling test in a thermoneutral environment (22 ± 1.7°C; 36 ± 4% relative humidity). Throughout the test, participants freely adjusted the tempe

Understanding the physiological processes that underpin primate performance is key if we are to assess how a primate might respond when navigating new and changing environments. Given the connection between a mammal's ability to thermoregulate and the changing demands of its thermal environment, increasing attention is being devoted to the study of thermoregulatory processes as a means to assess primate performance. Infrared thermography can be used to record the body surface temperatures of free-ranging animals. However, some uncertainty remains as to how these measurements can be used to app

Heat tolerance testing (HTT) assesses responses to heat stress with rectal temperature (Trec) and heart rate (HR) thresholds defining individuals as heat-tolerant (HT) or heat-intolerant (HI).
