INTRODUCTION: The cortical auditory evoked potential allows the possibility of objectively evaluating the entire auditory system, which is desirable in the pediatric population. Bone conduction auditory stimulation is recommended in the differential diagnosis of conductive hearing loss. However, there are not many studies of cortical auditory evoked potential using bone conduction.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize the response of cortical auditory evoked potential through bone conduction in normal-hearing neonates using an automated response analysis equipment.
METHODS: T

INTRODUCTION: Effective voice communication is essential when operating aircraft. Because of the loud operating environment in fighter cockpits, it has been a challenge to provide effective communication while simultaneously protecting the hearing sense. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using bone conducting transducers (BCT) in place of legacy communications systems in fighter cockpits.
METHODS: A military flight helmet was modified and outfitted with BCT and air-conducting speakers. BCT were independently tested against air-conducting speakers using a clinical

HYPOTHESIS: Intracochlear sound pressures (PIC) and velocity measurements of the stapes, round window, and promontory (VStap/RW/Prom) will show frequency-dependent attenuation using magnet-based transcutaneous bone conduction implants (TCBCIs) in comparison with direct-connect skin-penetrating implants (DCBCIs).
BACKGROUND: TCBCIs have recently been introduced as alternatives to DCBCIs. Clinical studies have demonstrated elevated high-frequency thresholds for TCBCIs as compared with DCBCIs; however, little data exist examining the direct effect of skin thickness on the cochlear input signal u

An investigation of the internal cranial anatomy of the anomodont Kawingasaurus from the Upper Permian Usili Formation in Tanzania by means of neutron tomography revealed an unusual inner and middle ear anatomy such as extraordinarily inflated vestibules, lateroventrally orientated stapes with large footplates, and a small angle between the planes of the anterior and lateral semicircular canals. The vestibule has a volume, which is about 25 times larger than the human vestibule, although Kawingasaurus has only a skull length of approximately 40 mm. Vestibule inflation and enlarged stapes footp

OBJECTIVE: The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) to air-conduction (AC) stimuli has been widely incorporated into audiological test-batteries for the pediatric population. The current understanding of ASSR to bone conduction (BC) stimuli, however, is more limited, especially in the case of infants and children. There are few reports on ASSR thresholds to BC stimuli in infants and young children, and none for infants or children with hearing loss. The objective of this study was to investigate BC ASSR thresholds in young children with normal hearing and various types and degrees of hearing

BACKGROUND: Some patients have to stop using their air-conduction hearing aid(s) because it causes or exacerbates chronic otitis. Then, a solution is the use of a bone-conduction hearing aid such as the percutaneous bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA).
OBJECTIVE: To compare patients' performance with their previous air-conduction hearing aid(s) and their BAHA using audiometric tests and a questionnaire.
DESIGN: Prospective clinical evaluation in a single subject design.
PATIENTS: The results of 34 consecutive patients from the Nijmegen, the Netherlands, BAHA series were included. The patients

Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2020eng
OBJECTIVE: The role of bilateral bone conduction amplification in patients with bilateral conductive hearing loss is unclear because cranial attenuation is usually considered negligible, and both cochleae can be stimulated with similar efficacy by each device. The aim of the study was to determine if bilateral bone-conduction hearing aids can improve hearing in noise in a homogeneous group of normal-hearing subjects with bilateral pseudo-conductive hearing loss.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, comparative.
SETTING: Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in University of Haifa, Israel.

Although conductive hearing loss is often found in children, few reports have appeared on the fitting of hearing aids in these children. In the present study, aided thresholds were determined in 40 children and 30 adults with pure conductive hearing loss (bone-conduction thresholds of 20 dB HL or less) who were successfully fitted with hearing aids. The patient group was split into subgroups according to the type of hearing aid used (bone-conduction hearing aid, binaural or monaural air-conduction hearing aids). Within each subgroup, the aided thresholds proved to be comparable between the adu

OBJECTIVE: To monitor ototoxicity, air conduction (AC) extended high frequency (EHF) thresholds can be measured up to 16 kHz. However, conductive hearing loss might influence these results. This is unfortunate because the EHF thresholds are important to follow the impact of ototoxic medication during therapy. Therefore a suitable bone conduction (BC) transducer and norm values for EHF BC measurements are needed.
DESIGN: In this study three different BC transducers were used: the B71 (Radioear), the KH70 (Präcitronic), and the KLH96 (Westra). Hearing thresholds were measured from 0.125 to 16 k
