Development and validation of an interpretable machine learning model for early risk prediction of acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with early prediction critical for timely intervention. Traditional risk assessment tools are limited because of their reliance on limited variables and static thresholds. This study aims to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML) model using multidimensional clinical data for early AMI risk prediction. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 7939 patients enrolled from the second hospital of Shandong University from January 2020 to January 2024. A total of 108-dimensi

A multidimensional risk prediction framework for malignant intestinal obstruction based on machine learning: computational model development and clinical validation.

Malignant intestinal obstruction (MIO) is a severe complication of advanced cancer. Traditional static assessment models struggle to capture its dynamic pathological mechanisms, limiting their clinical value. To address this, this study developed a multimodal machine learning framework. Core features (including the dynamic tumor enhancement ratio TER) were extracted via Lasso-Boruta dual-modality screening, and risk prediction was performed using an XGBoost-Random Survival Forest (RSF) cascade model. Results demonstrated an AUC of 0.84 ± 0.03 and Brier score of 0.19 in the internal validation

Prediction of metabolically healthy obesity based on dietary nutrients: a comparative analysis of six machine learning models with SHAP and LIME interpretation.

PURPOSE: The relationship between dietary nutrient intake and metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to construct machine learning models to predict MHO based on dietary nutrient profiles and to identify the most influential nutrients contributing to this phenotype. METHODS: Data were derived from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. Forty-five dietary nutrients, along with demographic and lifestyle variables, were included in two predictive frameworks: a dietary-only model and a complete model. Feature preproce

Interpretable machine learning model based on routine metabolic laboratory indices to identify advanced chronic kidney disease.

INTRODUCTION: Early identification of advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition accompanied by profound metabolic and endocrine disturbances, is essential for timely nephrology referral and intervention. However, widely used risk equations often require albuminuria or repeated measurements that are not consistently available in routine clinical practice. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed adult patients from three different departments affiliated to one university, including two independent hospitals and a clinic department. Routinely collected demographic, clinical, and metabolic

Development and validation of a noninvasive machine learning model using urinary extracellular vesicle physical parameters for prostate cancer diagnosis.

Urinary extracellular vesicles (uEVs) are promising biomarkers for prostate cancer (PCa). Although novel uEV-based biomarkers have advanced early diagnosis, their detection processes remain cumbersome and cost-prohibitive. The physical parameters of uEVs offer untapped predictive potential for PCa, providing a more convenient, rapid, and cost-effective diagnostic approach. This study aims to construct a predictive model integrating uEV physical parameters with machine learning (ML) algorithms to enhance the early diagnosis of PCa. Urine samples were collected from 222 eligible participants. uE

Evaluation of Approaches to Cattle Calving Prediction Based on Vaginal Temperature: Machine Learning-Versus Threshold-Based Models.

Prediction of calving among cattle based on body temperature is used to prevent calving accidents. However, conventional threshold-based methods often miss or misdetect signs of calving. We quantitatively compared a machine learning-based model with conventional threshold-based methods for calving prediction using vaginal temperature data from wearable devices. Vaginal temperature was recorded at 5-min intervals from approximately 7 days before the expected calving date until parturition in beef (n = 77) and dairy cattle (n = 78). Twenty-six time-series features were extracted, and a machine l

Predictive Modelling of Solvent Effects on Drug Incorporation into Polymeric Nanocarriers: A Machine Learning Approach.

This study aimed to identify solvent characteristics that enhance drug loading in polymeric micelles. Polyethylene glycol-block-polystyrene (PEG-b-PS) and curcumin were used as model compounds to investigate the impact of 40 different solvent mixtures on drug loading during flow-based assembly. We tested five algorithms: Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting (GP), XGBoost, Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), with the MLP model proving to be the most effective among them. To explain the model's predictions, we utilized SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values to

Use of machine learning to detect Escherichia coli in drinking water in Bangladesh.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a key indicator of fecal contamination in freshwater and can signal the presence of other harmful bacteria and viruses. The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of machine learning (ML) tools to detect E. coli in drinking water in Bangladesh using surveillance data under two scenarios: an imbalanced dataset and a balanced dataset. We utilized data from the 2019 Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, which included a total of 6,069 household drinking water samples. We used agglomerative hierarchical clustering with Ward's linkage to identify distr

A novel machine-learning algorithm to screen for trisomy 21 in first-trimester singleton pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal screening for Trisomy 21 (T21) in the UK is performed primarily in the first trimester. Nuchal Translucency (NT), gestational age, Free β-HCG and PAPP-A are used in combination, creating the 'combined' test. Multivariate Gaussian distribution models then determine the chance of T21 expressed as an odds ratio. This study investigates the use of machine-learning algorithms in the prediction of T21 in first-trimester singleton pregnancies and compares their performance to existing screening models. METHODS: A total of 86,354 anonymised, first trimester, singleton pregnancy

Machine learning evaluation for identification of M-proteins in human serum.

Serum electrophoresis (SPEP) is a method used to analyze the distribution of the most important proteins in the blood. The major clinical question is the presence of monoclonal fraction(s) of antibodies (M-protein/paraprotein), which is essential for the diagnosis and follow-up of hematological diseases, such as multiple myeloma. Recent studies have shown that machine learning can be used to assess protein electrophoresis by, for example, examining protein glycan patterns to follow up tumor surgery. In this study we compared 26 different decision tree algorithms to identify the presence of M-p

A HEK293T-derived explainable CatBoost signature for estimating HCoV-OC43 viral burden from host transcriptomes.

While HCoV-OC43 provides a tractable experimental model, it should be recognized as a limited model for studying generalized betacoronavirus host programs rather than a direct surrogate for SARS-CoV-2. We developed a CatBoost regression model using single-cell RNA sequencing data from 12,980 HEK293T cells to predict viral burden at single-cell resolution (full model 5-fold cross-validated R2=0.870). By leveraging CatBoost's native feature importance metrics, we identified 10 core host genes whose expression was most predictive of infection intensity, with TPI1 ranking as the single most import

Sustainable valorisation of agricultural residues into polyhydroxybutyrate and amylase using XGBoost-optimised extractive co-fermentation and its macromolecular characterization.

As food production increases globally, the disposal of agro-waste is an additional issue. However, turning this waste into products through sustainable methods could probably reduce environmental impact. In this work, the inexpensive carbon sources rice bran and corn bran were hydrolysed to produce Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and Enzyme (Amylase) by extractive Co-fermentation. This work is advanced by the synthesis, extraction, and characterization of PHB produced by the strain Priestia megaterium isolated from soil. A 48 h incubation in modified medium, optimized PHB and enzyme production, achi
