Sensation Seeking and Adaptation in Parabonauts.

Evidence from extreme environments suggests that there are relationships between difficulties of adaptation and psychological factors such as personality. In the framework of microgravity research on humans, the aim of this exploratory study was to investigate inter-individual differences of parabonauts on the basis of quality of adaptation to the physical demands of parabolic flights. The personality characteristics of two groups of parabonauts with a different quality of adaptation (an Adaptive group, N = 7, and a Maladaptive group, N = 15) were assessed using the Sensation Seeking Scale, Br

Motion sickness and proprioceptive aftereffects following virtual environment exposure.

To study the potential aftereffects of virtual environments (VE), tests of visually guided behavior and felt limb position (pointing with eyes open and closed) along with self-reports of motion sickness-like discomfort were administered before and after 30 min exposure of 34 subjects. When post- discomfort was compared to a pre-baseline, the participants reported more sickness afterward (p < 0.03). The change in felt limb position resulted in subjects pointing higher (p < 0.038) and slightly to the left, although the latter difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). When findings

Imprinted Arousal Pattern (IAP): A Transdiagnostic Clinical Reasoning for Compulsive Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive behaviors across psychiatric diagnoses often recur despite diagnostic clarity, pharmacologic stabilization, and structured psychotherapy. Substance use disorders and behavioral addictions demonstrate high relapse rates, particularly under stress, while many patients describe not a pursuit of pleasure but an inability to tolerate stillness, boredom, or emotional deadness. Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) provides descriptive reliability and the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework advances dime

Creating livable lives: A qualitative exploration of life after homelessness.

The transition from homelessness to a housed life involves complex psychosocial processes that cannot be reduced to the mere fact of securing accommodation. While Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) approaches have shown success in achieving housing stability, less attention has been paid to how people construct meaningful lives after securing permanent housing. Through field observations and in-depth interviews conducted over multiple time points, we developed a relational framework synthesising recognition theory, feminist care ethics, and Indigenous scholarship to analyse participants' exper

Changes in personality pattern during the first pregnancy and lactation.

In order to study personality changes in first pregnancy and lactation, two groups of women (n = 161, mean age 26.8 years) completed the self-report inventory Karolinska Scales of Personality and a scale for emotional dependency during pregnancy and 3 or 6 months after delivery. The results were within normal limits when compared with the normative values. Analysis of variance showed that the subscales Muscular Tension, Somatic Anxiety, and Monotony Avoidance diminished significantly from pregnancy and to the test periods after delivery (all p values < 0.01). Impulsiveness showed the same tren

Innovations in Practice: A pilot randomised trial on smartphone and social media abstinence - effects on sleep quality and psychological wellbeing in adolescents.

There is growing concern that smartphones and social media (S/SM) disrupt adolescent sleep, wellbeing and cognition, yet causal evidence from robust interventions is limited. To assess the acceptability of a total 21-day S/SM detox, we conducted a preregistered (https://osf.io/79zd2) pilot randomised controlled trial with 82 adolescents aged 13-18 years from UK schools. Participants were randomly assigned to a total S/SM detox (N = 26), total S/SM detox with access to a basic 'brick' phone (N = 26) or a business-as-usual control (N = 30). Pre-and post-intervention measures of sleep, wellbeing

A qualitative exploration of the lived experiences of youth living with HIV/AIDS at Jimma University Medical Center and Jimma Health Center, Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, young people are often underserved in HIV programs, with limited access to counseling, treatment, and care. Most research on youth and HIV has focused on epidemiology and prevention among 15–24-year-olds, while little attention has been paid to the lived experiences of youth living with HIV. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the lived experiences of youth living with HIV who receive services from Jimma Health Center and Jimma University Medical Center. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological design was employed to explore the experiences of purposively selected youth liv

A cross-sectional latent class analysis of self-reported snus use in men's and women's professional football in England.

OBJECTIVES: Anecdotally, snus is widely used in Europe by professional footballers. However, prevalence and motivations for use have not been determined, alongside a lack of robust data regarding its use on player health and performance. The aims of the current research were to assess snus use amongst professional football players and categorise users through latent class analysis (LCA). DESIGN: Mixed-method design involving a cross-sectional survey study of 628 male and 51 female professional footballers in England, and 16 semi-structured interviews with multidisciplinary football staff cond

A qualitative exploration of triggers for alcohol use and access to support during the COVID-19 pandemic among people identifying as problem drinkers in the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: A polarisation of drinking behaviour was observed during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, with some people reported to be drinking more alcohol and others less. We aimed to understand how and why the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions impacted alcohol use and access to support and services during this time. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 27 participants, including 20 people identifying as problem drinkers and seven alcohol service providers. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: We identified two main trig

An empirical study of gender differences in online gambling.

Gambling has typically been considered a predominately male activity. However, recent prevalence surveys have shown greater numbers of females are now gambling. Much of the gambling literature suggests online gamblers are more likely to be male, and that problem gamblers are more likely to be male. Males and females are also likely to be gambling for different reasons and have a preference for different gambling activities. Little is known about the pattern of play among female online gamblers. The aim of this survey was to develop a better profile of female online gamblers and to examine any
