Repurposing of Anticancer Stem Cell Drugs in Brain Tumors.

Brain tumors in adults may be infrequent when compared with other cancer etiologies, but they remain one of the deadliest with bleak survival rates. Current treatment modalities encompass surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, increasing resistance rates are being witnessed, and this has been attributed, in part, to cancer stem cells (CSCs). CSCs are a subpopulation of cancer cells that reside within the tumor bulk and have the capacity for self-renewal and can differentiate and proliferate into multiple cell lineages. Studying those CSCs enables an increasing understandi

A crossed brain stem syndrome without crossed sensory symptomatology.

Lateral medullary infarction (LMI) or Wallenberg syndrome is a type of brain stem stroke, more specifically, a type of crossed brain stem syndrome. LMI is a well-described entity with several documented typical characteristics including pain and temperature impairment in the ipsilateral to the lesion side of the face and the contralateral side of the trunk and limbs. We present a case of LMI which describes a patient who presented with atypical features of analgesia and thermanaesthesia on the contralateral side of the face and absence of sensory deficit on the ipsilateral side. We attributed

Plasma brain natriuretic peptide during myeloablative stem cell transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular complication is one of the serious complications in stem cell transplantation (SCT). We measured plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentrations in patients who received SCT to evaluate possible cardiac toxicity of the regimens employed in SCT. PATIENTS: Ten patients with allogeneic SCT and 5 patients with autologous SCT using myeloablative conditioning regimens were enrolled. The preparative chemotherapy for 8 patients with allogeneic SCT included cyclophosphamide (60 mg/kg i.v. for 2 days) and other drugs and that for autologous SCT included cyclophosphamide

[Brain ischemia--regenerative therapy using human neural stem cells].

The mortality of stroke is still the those of single organs. Even if patients survive the brain attack they often suffer from not only motor functional disability but also psychiatric problems such as post-stroke depression and decrease in spontaneity. The stoke is the number one cause of the bed-ridden state "Netakiri". Presently only anti-thrombotic and anti-oxidative stress therapies are available and the ischemic core destroyed immediately after the stroke could never be rescued. We have started to study the basic aspect of transplantation therapy of cerebral infarction using neural stem c

Brain stem stroke causing baroreflex failure and paroxysmal hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal neurogenic hypertension has been associated with a variety of diseases affecting the brain stem but has only rarely been reported after brain stem stroke. The mechanism is thought to involve increased sympathetic activity and baroreflex dysfunction. We undertook microneurographic recordings of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MNSA) during beat-to-beat blood pressure (BP) monitoring to investigate this hypothesis. CASE DESCRIPTION: We investigated a 75-year-old woman who developed paroxysmal hypertension (BP 220/110 mm Hg) after a large left-sided medullary infarct. Th

Functional evidence of brain stem immaturity in Rett syndrome.

Autonomic activity and respiration were studied in Rett syndrome (RS) and age matched controls. Breathing movements were monitored using a pletysmograph around the chest. Sympathetic activity was monitored by measuring blood pressure (BP) using the Finapres. Cardiac parasympathetic activity was monitored by measuring the cardiac response to baroreflex using the NeuroScope which outputs measure of cardiac vagal tone (CVT) in units of a linear vagal scale (LVS). Resting CVT (means +/- SEM) was 10.5 +/- 0.9 units in the LVS and BP was 94.6 +/- 6.4 mmHg in controls. The BP was 78 +/- 4.33 mmHg and

Auditory brain stem evoked potentials in patients with leprosy.

Nineteen, randomly selected male patients with lepromatous leprosy were evaluated electrophysiologically. All of these patients had long-standing disease and were treated with dapsone alone. There were statistically significant differences between the values obtained in this group of leprosy patients compared to 20 age-matched controls in auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEP). The findings are consistent with a pathologic process located mainly between the cochlear nucleus and the lateral lemniscus in the auditory brain stem pathways. It should be emphasized that our patients had long-s

Intramedullary epidermoid cyst in the brain stem: case report.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of intracranial epidermoid cysts is between 0.2% to 1.8% of all brain tumors. They usually occur in the cerebellopontine angle or parasellar region. Intramedullary epidermoid cyst is rare and only nine cases have been previously reported. METHODS: A 69-year-old woman had progressive left hemiparesis for 2 years. Computed tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that there was a cystic tumor in the pons that was compressing the brain stem. A part of the tumor cyst wall and the content of the cyst were surgically removed by right subtemporal tr

Auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) in sleep respiratory disorders.

Neurophysiological repercussions of sleep respiratory disorders (SRDs) are still unclear. It has been shown that SRDs induce disturbance on auditory event-related potentials with a delayed latency of the cognitive P300 potentials. Since the Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) explore the auditory brainstem structures and are independent on cognition, we evaluated the neurological impact of SDRs on central nervous system by ABRs in these patients. Four groups of patients were studied: snorers (S, 17 subjects), sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS, 48 subjects), apnoeic patients with respiratory insuffici

Olivary degeneration after cerebellar or brain stem haemorrhage: MRI.

Magnetic resonance (MR) images of seven patients with olivary degeneration caused by cerebellar or brain stem haemorrhages were reviewed. In four patients with cerebellar haemorrhage, old haematomas were identified as being located in the dentate nucleus; the contralateral inferior olivary nuclei were hyperintense on proton-density- and T2-weighted images. In two patients with pontine haemorrhages, the old haematomas were in the tegmentum and the ipsilateral inferior olivary nuclei, which were hyperintense. In one case of midbrain haemorrhage, the inferior olivary nuclei were hyperintense bila

Brain stem electric response audiometry in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia.

Auditory evoked responses using BERA were studied in 30 newborn babies with plasma bilirubin > or = 15 mgm/dl and repeated after treatment of neonatal jaundice with bilirubin levels of < or = 10 mgm/dl. A few jaundiced babies (16.5%) showed absent BERA response at the initial/subsequent examination. After treatment, 3/30 babies showed absent wave form responses and 2 of these were clinically kernicteric. Jaundiced babies had prolonged wave peak latencies and inter peak latencies. Treated babies showed a tendency towards recovery in their BERA responses which were however not complete. Total pl

A pontine tuberculoma mimicking an exophytic brain stem tumor.

A 21 year old man with a five month history of facial paresis, diplopia, and gait disturbance diagnosed with a brain stem tumor at another institution was evaluated. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, clinical and laboratory evaluations suggested a pontine astrocytoma, and the mass was excised. Pathological diagnosis was a tuberculoma confirmed by postoperative positive Mantoux testing. CT and MRI appearances of tuberculomas have been described, but can not differentiate them completely from other tumors such as astrocytomas. Because the incidence of tuberculomas has increased in

[Brain stem insufficiency in acute ischemia and cerebral hemorrhage].

Consciousness disorders are closely related to the general dysfunction of the brain stem, and called by some authors brain stem insufficiency. To evaluate the degree of brain stem dysfunction, an original scale has been elaborated. Each group of brain stem functions are scored. Consciousness being the most important symptom of the brain stem insufficiency is scored about 50% in a 63-score scale. Scores are used to achieve the most objectivity in the clinical monitoring of the brain stem insufficiency. Its utility was examined in 75 patients with either ischemia or cerebral hemorrhage. Brain stem and cervical cord dysraphic lesions in iniencephaly.

Iniencephaly is a rare, lethal, axial dysraphic malformation complex diagnosed on the basis of three cardinal features: deficiency of the occipital bone, cervicothoracic spinal retroflexion, and rachischisis. The majority of the patients also have various associated viscerae malformations. An iniencephalic female fetus delivered at 35 5/7 weeks of gestation revealed severe anomalies of the central nervous system and the spine: the cerebellar vermis was hypoplastic, the medulla oblongata was flattened and broadened, and the cervical canal was widely patent dorsally. The thoracolumbar spinal cor

[Auditory brain-stem response in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

Auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) of 20 patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) were studied. Their average I, V latencies and III-V intervals were significantly prolonged; the I-III intervals were statistically shortened; but the III latencies and I-V intervals basically were normal. ABRs of 16 patients were recorded again in 1-2 months following uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). All parameters except thresholds were not significantly different from preoperative ones. These results may imply that there may be some effects of OSAS on cochlea and auditory brain-stem s

[Severe brain stem ischemia caused by subclavian steal syndrome].

Subclavian steal syndrome (SSS) is produced by occlusion of the proximal subclavian artery and subsequent retrograde filling of the subclavian artery via the vertebral artery. The resulting alteration of blood flow may cause a variety of symptoms secondary to decreased blood supply to the brain and upper extremity of the affected side. A case of severe brain stem ischemia caused by SSS was reported. We performed a subclavian-subclavian graft shunt for this patient and obtained good results. Such a case has been only rarely described in the literature. Complementary information obtained from di
