The patient presenting with a mass lesion of the parotid gland is frequently found to have a mixed tumor of salivary tissue origin. However, less common lesions occur in the anatomical region of the parotid gland. These pathological entities deserve consideration in the differential diagnosis. This report presents nine patients with unusual lesions occurring in the parotid region. These regions include cervicofacial actinomycosis, branchial cleft cyst, parapharyngeal tumors, bony lesion of the mandible, non-parotid origin malignant tumor, and metastatic malignant tumors. Each class of lesions

In the head of vertebrate embryos, neural crest cells migrate from the neural tube into the presumptive facial region and condense to form cranial ganglia and skeletal elements in the branchial arches. We show that newly formed neural folds and migrating neural crest cells express the neuropilin 2 (npn2) receptor in a manner that is highly conserved in amniotes. The repulsive npn2 ligand semaphorin (sema) 3F is expressed in a complementary pattern in the mouse. Furthermore, mice carrying null mutations for either npn2 or sema3F have abnormal cranial neural crest migration. Most notably, "bridg

First branchial cleft anomalies are embryological defect account for 8-10% of all branchial cleft defects. Approximately 17% of all Paediatric cervical masses are due to branchial anomalies. Despite of the fact that these anomalies are benign, secondary infection, positional effect and complication of treatment like surgery account for morbidity. Here one such case of 30 years old lady who presented to us with one discharging sinus in the floor of the right external auditory canal with a swelling in the upper neck for about 20 years. On examination showed one discharging sinus opening in the f

Proper development of taste organs including the tongue and taste papillae requires interactions with the underlying mesenchyme through multiple molecular signaling pathways. The effects of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and antagonists are profound, however, the tissue-specific roles of distinct receptors are largely unknown. Here, we report that constitutive activation (ca) of ALK2-BMP signaling in the tongue mesenchyme (marked by Wnt1-Cre) caused microglossia-a dramatically smaller and misshapen tongue with a progressively severe reduction in size along the anteroposterior axis and abse

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: There are significant indications that amphibians require TH (thyroid hormones) prior to their involvement in the regulation of metamorphosis and before the development of a functional thyroid.
RESULTS: In order to investigate the potential role for TH in pre-metamorphic Xenopus tropicalis we have cloned cDNAs for, and analysed the expression of, TPO (thyroid peroxidase), 5'DII (type II iodothyronine deiodinase) and 5DIII (type III iodothyronine deiodinase), enzymes involved in TH metabolism. Zygotic expression of TPO was detected in neurula stage embryos. Expression w

BACKGROUND: The osseointegration concept has dramatically changed the possibility of rehabilitating patients with craniofacial defects due to branchial arch syndromes.
PURPOSE: This article describes some problems related to the investigative routines and rehabilitation of individuals with malformations of the first and second branchial arches of the craniofacial region. Animal model systems have increased the knowledge of basic embryonic processes that can explain the extent of the malformations. Though most clinical first and second branchial arch syndromes are likely to be caused by sporad

Migration of cranial neural crest cells is a crucial event in the formation of facial organs such as the frontonasal mass and branchial arches. However, the source of the populating crest cells that occupy the frontonasal mass remains unclear in mammalian embryos. To elucidate this, we performed focal DiI injections at various sites in the prosencephalon (forebrain, including the future telencephalon and diencephalon), mesencephalon (midbrain), and the anterior part of the rhombencephalon (hindbrain) separated posteriorly by the preotic sulus (i.e., rhombomere A; future rhombomere 1 and 2) of

OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical and anatomical presentations and to discuss the guidelines for surgical management of anomalies of the first branchial cleft.
METHOD: Twenty-one patients with first branchial cleft anomalies were treated in our department between January 1994 and December 2004, their clinical data were retrospectively analysed.
RESULT: Surgery was performed on all patients. Among them 13 were males and 8 females, ranging in age from 1.5 to 33 years with an average of 15 years. Anatomically, 3 types of first branchial cleft anomalies were identified: fistulas (n = 17), cyst

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) was identified as being associated with more than one mortality event affecting common carp in Canada. The first was an extensive mortality event that occurred in 2007 in the Kawartha Lakes region, Ontario, affecting Lakes Scugog and Pigeon. Fish had branchial necrosis and hepatic vasculitis with an equivocal interstitial nephritis. Several fish also had branchial columnaris. Subsequent mortality events occurred in 2008 in additional bodies of water in south-central Ontario, such as Lake Katchewanooka and outside of Ontario in Lake Manitoba, Manitoba. Koi herpesvirus was

We describe an endoscopic-assisted transcervical technique for excision of second branchial cleft anomalies in young children. In three cases (ages 2-8), this approach allowed safe identification and ligation of the tracts while providing improved visualization and allowing smaller incisions. Endoscopic assistance may be an effective alternative to traditional wide transcervical excision.

When searching over associations between congenital ear abnormalities, especially microtia and affiliated deformities like cleft lip or palate and congenital heart diseases, some clinical analysis and genetic theories are found. A 10-year-old boy sent to the plastic surgery hospital was puzzled by a congenital anterior auricular fistula with fluid trace for more than 9 years. The preoperative diagnoses were branchial cleft fistula and congenital left ear deformity with postoperation of TOF. By browsing over studies on genetic concerns and clinical performance, it may be attributed to a possibl

There are many possible causes of congenital neck masses, with the most common ones being thyroglossal duct cysts, branchial cleft anomalies, and vascular malformations. Most congenital neck masses are asymptomatic in the neonatal period, but depending on the location and the size, they can cause airway obstruction and serious complications at birth. Proper diagnosis is important for optimal treatment planning, and if the airway is compromised, multidisciplinary teamwork is critical for proper airway management. This review summarizes the clinical features, etiology, diagnosis, management, and

BACKGROUND: Lateral cervical cysts are usually considered as of branchial cleft origin, despite many studies showing that branchial cysts do not arise from the remnants of the branchial apparatus. In the same way, some authors still consider that a true clinicopathological entity such as 'branchial cleft cyst carcinoma' could exist, at least in theory. Despite insufficient evidence in support of the branchial theory, a number of publications continue to emphasise this concept.
METHODS: A literature review of articles in Medline and PubMed databases was carried out to retrieve papers relevant

Neonates often have congenital lumps or sinuses. It is expected that pediatricians will distinguish those with important physiologic implications from those without. Accurate understanding of these lesions is important for the practitioner to avoid unnecessary tests and anxiety and to ensure that seemingly benign lesions with important implications are addressed in a timely manner. This review aims to clarify the consequences of some lesions that can easily be misinterpreted, offering guidance in the initial management of patients with congenital lumps or sinuses. We address several lesions th

BACKGROUND: The pharyngeal arches (PAs) generate cranial organs including the tongue. The taste placodes, formed in particular locations on the embryonic tongue surface, differentiate into taste buds harbored in distinct gustatory papillae. The developing tongue also has a complex supply of cranial nerves through each PA. However, the relationship between the PAs and taste bud development is not fully understood.
RESULTS: Ripply3 homozygous mutant mice, which have impaired third/fourth PAs, display a hypoplastic circumvallate papilla and lack taste buds, although the taste placode is normally

Remnants of the pharyngeal apparatus can (rarely) form cysts. This retrospective case series describes clinical and histologic findings of such lesions. Clinical and histology databases were searched for cases of pharyngeal remnants. Eight patients were diagnosed with cysts located subcutaneously in the head and neck, adjacent to the submandibular salivary gland, near the thyroid, and in the mediastinum. Cyst linings included ciliated epithelium, and surgical excision was curative. Knowledge of pharyngeal development is useful for their characterization. Clinicians should consider pharyngeal r

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Branchial anomalies comprise approximately 20% of pediatric congenital head and neck lesions. This study reviews current literature detailing the diagnosis and management of first, second, third and fourth branchial cysts, sinuses and fistulae.
RECENT FINDINGS: Branchial anomalies remain classified as first, second, third and fourth cysts, sinuses and fistulae. Management varies on the basis of classification. The imaging study of choice remains controversial. Computed tomography fistulography likely best demonstrates the complete course of the tract if a cutaneous opening

OBJECTIVE: Branchial cleft anomalies are well described, with the second arch anomaly being the commonest. Following surgical excision, recurrence occurs in 2 to 22 per cent of cases, and is believed to be due largely to incomplete resection. This report aims to describe a simple surgical technique for treatment of second branchial cleft sinus in the older paediatric age group and adults.
METHODOLOGY: An 11-year-old girl underwent surgical excision of a second branchial sinus. Prior to surgery, she was assessed by means of an imaging sonogram, and by direct methylene blue dye injection into t

The pharyngeal (branchial) region represents a classic example where the relationship between ontogenesis and phylogenesis has been demonstrated. It is a region where the development of gills during ontogenesis of all chordates has been recapitulated. In the process of evolution the pharyngeal region has undergone marked changes. While it functioned to ensure blood oxygenation and regulation of a constant internal environment in aquatic animals, it had to adapt to new and more complex functions in terrestrial vertebrates. The lungs have taken on the main role of blood oxygenation and the saliv
