Broca's region is composed of two adjacent cytoarchitectonic areas, 44 and 45, which have distinct connectivity to superior temporal and inferior parietal regions in both macaque monkeys and humans. The current study aimed to make use of prior knowledge of sulcal anatomy and resting-state functional connectivity, together with a novel visualization technique, to manually parcellate areas 44 and 45 in individual brains in vivo. One hundred and one resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging datasets from the Human Connectome Project were used. Left-hemisphere surface-based correlation m

Language, gesture, and handedness are in most people represented in the left cerebral hemisphere. To explore the relations among these attributes, we collected fMRI images in a large sample of left- and right-handers while they performed language tasks and watched action sequences. Regions of interest included the frontal and parietal areas previously identified as comprising an action-observation network, and the frontal and temporal areas comprising the primary areas for language production and comprehension. All of the language areas and most of the action-observation areas showed an overal

Several behavioural and neuroimaging studies have suggested that the language function is not restricted into the left areas but it involves regions not predicted by the classical language model. Accordingly, the Embodied Cognition theory postulates a close interaction between the language and the motor system. Indeed, it has been shown that non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is effective for language recovery also when applied over sensorimotor regions, such as the motor cortex, the cerebellum and the spinal cord. We will review a series of NIBS studies in post-stroke aphasic people aimed

Identifying the evolutionary origins of human speech remains a topic of intense scientific interest. Here we describe a unique feature of adult human neuroanatomy compared to chimpanzees and other primates that may provide an explanation of changes that occurred to enable the capacity for speech. That feature is the Prefrontal extent of the Frontal Operculum (PFOp) region, which is located in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, adjacent and ventromedial to the classical Broca's area. We also show that, in chimpanzees, individuals with the most human-like PFOp, particularly in the left hemisph

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FCon) involves central nervous system dysregulation, particularly in brain regions responsible for visceral sensation, emotional processing, and autonomic control. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we examined brain activity alterations in FCon patients to elucidate brain-gut interactions.
METHOD: Patients with constipation meeting Rome IV criteria were recruited from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, while healthy controls were enrolled from the local community. The cortical regions of interest (ROIs) included the prefrontal cortex (PFC), dors

Reading disability (dyslexia) refers to an unexpected difficulty with reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. Dyslexia is most commonly caused by a difficulty in phonological processing (the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken language), which affects the ability of an individual to speak, read, and spell. In this paper, I describe reading disabilities by focusing on their underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Neurobiological studies using functional brain imaging have uncovered the reading pathways, brain regions involved in reading, and neu

In the primate brain, a set of areas in the ventrolateral frontal (VLF) cortex and the dorsomedial frontal (DMF) cortex appear to control vocalizations. The basic role of this network in the human brain and how it may have evolved to enable complex speech remain unknown. In the present functional neuroimaging study of the human brain, a multidomain protocol was utilized to investigate the roles of the various areas that comprise the VLF-DMF network in learning rule-based cognitive selections between different types of motor actions: manual, orofacial, nonspeech vocal, and speech vocal actions.

BACKGROUND: Cefazolin is a well-known antibiotic associated with seizures. However, intrathecal cefazolin-induced status epilepticus (SE) is very rare and resultant persistent dysarthria has not been previously reported.
CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old woman underwent epidural adhesiolysis due to lumbar spinal stenosis and 500 mg of cefazolin was infused through the thecal puncture site during the procedure. SE developed abruptly 40 minutes later and it persisted for 3 days. Severe dysarthria, dysphagia and cognitive dysfunction developed after the cessation of SE. Although the patient's other sym

Does the brain inflect verbs by applying rules, by associative retrieval of the inflected form, or both? We used whole-head magnetoencephalography to spatiotemporally map the brain response underlying verb past-tense inflection. Placing either regular or irregular verbs into the past tense sequentially modulates the bilateral visual, left inferotemporal, posterior superior temporal (Wernicke's area), left inferior prefrontal (Broca's area), and right prefrontal cortices. Although irregular and regular verb inflection evokes similar cortical response patterns, differences in specific frontotemp

In the human brain, areas 44 and 45 constitute Broca's region, the ventrolateral frontal region critical for language production. The homologues of these areas in the macaque monkey brain have been established by direct cytoarchitectonic comparison with the human brain. The cortical areas that project monosynaptically to areas 44 and 45B in the macaque monkey brain require clarification. Fluorescent retrograde tracers were placed in cytoarchitectonic areas 44 and 45B of the macaque monkey, as well as in the anterior part of the inferior parietal lobule and the superior temporal gyrus. The current study provides the first histological whole-brain atlas of the lizard, Hemidactylus flaviviridis. Macroscopic analysis of the lizard brain demonstrates its gross morphology, including various fissures and major divisions, forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. Serial coronal sections stained with cresyl violet provided a detailed insight into the architecture of the lizard brain with a well-defined ventricular system featuring lateral ventricles in the telencephalon, third ventricle in the diencephalon, and fourth ventricle in the rhombencephalon. The forebrain comprised telencephalon

The complete form of the pli de passage fronto-pariétal moyen of Broca, a gyrus connecting the pre- and postcentral gyri at the level of the presumable primary motor (M1) hand area, represents a rare anatomic variation. By using functional MR imaging in a healthy subject incidentally found to harbor this configuration, we attempted to determine whether such an accessory gyrus would be functionally active and what effect it has on the complex somatotopic within-arm organization of M1. We found a specific and consistent activation pattern along the lateral and medial cortical boundaries of the p

BACKGROUND: The frontal aslant tract (FAT) is a white matter fiber pathway connecting the superior frontal gyrus to the Broca area. This tract in the dominant hemisphere has been shown to play a role in speech initiation and production, and direct subcortical stimulation can induce stuttering and speech arrest in a patient. However, controversy remains as to whether disruption of this pathway will lead to a permanent language deficit and if it is even necessary to map this tract during tumor resections of the dominant frontal lobe.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we report a case of a patient with a

A growth hormone (GH) injection is able to induce the phosphorylated form of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (pSTAT5) in a large number of cells throughout the mouse brain. The present study had the objective to map the distribution of GH-responsive cells in the brain of rats that received an intracerebroventricular injection of GH and compare it to the pattern found in mice. We observed that rats and mice exhibited a similar distribution of GH-induced pSTAT5 in the majority of areas of the telencephalon, hypothalamus and brainstem. However, rats exhibited a higher densi

RATIONALE: To date, little is known regarding the neural mechanisms of the functional recovery of language after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in aphasia. Our aim was to investigate the mechanism that underlies rTMS and speech training in a case report.
PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who was initially diagnosed with conduction aphasia following a left hemisphere stroke.
INTERVENTIONS: The rTMS location comprised the left Broca area, and a frequency of 5 Hz for 20 min/d for 10 days during a 2-week period was used. She had receiv

In this paper we undertake a combined analysis of several studies in which marmoset monkeys received immunotoxic lesions of the cortical cholinergic projections from the basal nucleus of Meynert (NBM) bilaterally and/or in combination with immunotoxic lesions of other parts of the cholinergic system or ablations of the target inferotemporal neocortical area. Analysis of the mean learning scores across all visual discriminations learning tasks for each lesion combination revealed highly significant impairments where the NBM was lesioned bilaterally or where an NBM lesion in one hemisphere was c

Cognitive impairment resulting from cerebellar damage, known as cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS), can cause language impairment and aphasia. The disruption of the cerebro-cerebellar pathway is a possible mechanism for CCAS. Consequently, aphasia may also arise from brainstem lesions. However, the precise mechanisms of brainstem-induced aphasia are not fully understood owing to the scarcity of published reports describing this condition. Herein, we investigated characteristics of patients with aphasia attributed to the brainstem infarction. We retrospectively analyzed medical reco

The present study reports the first systematic rostrocaudal distribution of estrogen receptor-alpha immunoreactivity (ERalpha-ir) in the human hypothalamus and its adjacent areas in young adults. Postmortem material taken from 10 subjects (five male and five female), between 20 and 39 years of age, was investigated. In addition, three age-matched subjects with abnormal levels of estrogens were studied: a castrated, estrogen-treated 50-year-old male-to-female transsexual (T1), a 31-year-old man with an estrogen-producing tumor (S2), and an ovariectomized 46-year-old woman (S8). The left ventral premotor cortex (PMv) has not been fully acknowledged as a key component of the brain's network for reading. This region, corresponding to Brodmann area (BA) 6, is cytoarchitecturally distinct from adjacent Broca's area (BA44/45) and primary motor cortex (BA4) and specifically involved in articulatory codes for speech production. The left PMv is known to receive direct white matter projections from posterior brain regions responsible for visual and phonological processing. Consequently, the region plays a significant role in reading when the expert visual word-form system in t
