Comparative assessment of dexmedetomidine and butorphanol for attenuation of etomidate-induced myoclonus: A double-blind, randomised controlled study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Etomidate is a popular induction agent, but its use is associated with myoclonus in 50%-80% of non-premedicated patients. This study aims to compare dexmedetomidine and butorphanol for their relative efficacy in preventing etomidate-induced myoclonus. METHODS: This randomised study was conducted after obtaining institutional ethical committee clearance and written informed consent from sixty American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I or II consenting patients between 18 and 60 years of age of either sex who had been scheduled for elective surgeries under general anaest

A randomized crossover study of the effect of butorphanol-lidocaine and tramadol-lidocaine on sevoflurane's minimum alveolar concentration in dogs.

Inhalational anesthesia is routinely used in small animal surgery. Selecting a suitable drug combination is vital since it may negatively affect the patient's physiological condition. We conducted this study to examine the sparing effect of butorphanol-lidocaine (BUT-LID) and tramadol-lidocaine (TRM-LID) on sevoflurane's minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) in 10 healthy mongrel dogs aged 1-2 years and weighing 11.5 ± 0.8 kg (mean ± SD). Sevoflurane's MAC was measured on three separate occasions. The three dog treatment groups were control (CONT) anesthetized only with sevoflurane, TRM-LID (TR

Anesthetic effects of a combination of medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol on the production of offspring in Japanese field vole, Microtus montebelli.

Pentobarbital sodium (Somnopentyl) can induce surgical anesthesia with a strong hypnotic effect that causes loss of consciousness. Animals have been known to die during experimental surgery under anesthesia with Somnopentyl, causing it to be declared inadequate as a general anesthetic for single treatment. An anesthetic combination of 0.3 mg/kg medetomidine, 4.0 mg/kg midazolam and 5.0 mg/kg butorphanol (M/M/B:0.3/4/5) was reported to induce anesthesia for a duration of around 40 min in ICR mice; similar anesthetic effects were reported in both male and female BALB/c and C57BL/6J strains of mi

Effects of pentobarbital, isoflurane, or medetomidine-midazolam-butorphanol anesthesia on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood chemistry in rats.

Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) is commonly examined for pulmonary toxicity in animal studies. Two common means of anesthesia before euthanasia and bronchoalveolar lavage in rats are intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital and inhalation of isoflurane. Medetomidine-midazolam-butorphanol is an alternative anesthesia to pentobarbital for animal welfare; however, the effect of this combination on BALF and blood chemistry is unknown. Here, we compared the effects of anesthesia by intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital or one of two combinations of medetomidine-midazolam-butorphanol (dos

Effects of butorphanol and fentanyl on cerebral pressures and cardiovascular hemodynamics during tunneling phase for ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion.

PURPOSE: Subcutaneous tunneling for ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion is the most painful step of this surgery. It is associated with intense hemodynamic response, may influence the intracranial pressure, and thus may worsen the existing intracranial pathology. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the commonly used opioid fentanyl, along with butorphanol, an agonist-antagonist compound. METHODS: Twenty adult patients undergoing ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery were induced with fentanyl 2-mcg.kg(-1) and thiopentone 4-5 mg.kg(-1). Intubation followed the administration of rocuronium

Effect of butorphanol and morphine on pulmonary mechanics, arterial blood pressure and venous plasma histamine in the anesthetized dog.

Butorphanol, levo-N-cyclobutylmethyl-3, 14beta-dihydroxy-morphinan, is a new agonist-antagonist type analgetic agent which is 4 times more potent than morphine in experimental animals. Equianalgetic doses of butorphanol and morphine were compared, following rapid intravenous injection to anesthetized dogs, for their effects on pulmonary resistance, dynamic compliance, arterial blood pressure and venous plasma histamine levels. Butorphanol, 0.75 mg/kg, had no effect on pulmonary resistance, dynamic compliance or venous plasma histamine levels. Morphine, 3 mg/kg, increased pulmonary resistance,

Impact of sequential administration of detomidine, butorphanol, and midazolam on sedation, ataxia, stimulus response, and bispectral index in horses.

BACKGROUND: Standing sedation is a safe and cost-effective alternative to general anesthesia in horses, but challenges include achieving adequate drug effect to block the stimulus response without inducing ataxia or recumbency. A benefit of midazolam has been reported in equine dental procedures. Seeking synergy, a combination of lower doses of several pharmacologic agents, including midazolam, may improve the quality of sedation while minimizing adverse effects. Bispectral index (BIS) correlates with sedation scores in human ICU patients, but the correlation between sedation scores and BIS ha

Comparison of Butorphanol-Azaperone-Medetomidine and Nalbuphine-Medetomidine-Azaperone in Free-Ranging Elk (Cervus canadensis) in Pennsylvania, USA.

Chemical immobilization is commonly used to capture and handle free-ranging elk (Cervus canadensis). Butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine (BAM) and nalbuphine-medetomidine-azaperone (NalMed-A) are compounded drug combinations that are lower-scheduled in the US than drugs historically used for elk immobilizations. We compared BAM and NalMed-A for immobilization of free-ranging elk using free-darting and Clover trapping. From January 2020 to April 2022, 196 female elk were immobilized in Pennsylvania, USA. We report vital rates, induction and recovery times, and the need for supplemental drugs. We
