Management Practices for the Control of Haematobia irritans, Dermatobia hominis, and Cochliomyia hominivorax in Cattle Across Latin America: A Sustainable, Collective Approach.

Bovines are suitable hosts and can be affected by fly infestations. Flies pose a significant threat to cattle livestock in Latin America (LA), causing substantial economic repercussions to animal production (reduced productivity, veterinary expenses, and decreased animal welfare) and damage to human health. The most important flies affecting cattle in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay are Haematobia irritans, Dermatobia hominis, and Cochliomyia hominivorax. Due to production losses and the consequent economic costs associated with these flies, control measures must be implemente

A chromosomal-scale reference genome of the New World Screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

The New World Screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Calliphoridae), is the most important myiasis-causing species in America. Screwworm myiasis is a zoonosis that can cause severe lesions in livestock, domesticated and wild animals, and occasionally in people. Beyond the sanitary problems associated with this species, these infestations negatively impact economic sectors, such as the cattle industry. Here, we present a chromosome-scale assembly of C. hominivorax's genome, organized in 6 chromosome-length and 515 unplaced scaffolds spanning 534 Mb. There was a clear correspondence between the D.

Myiasis in humans: Case reports in Northeastern Brazil including multispecies co-infestation by Sarcophagidae.

Myiasis is a parasitosis characterized by an infestation of living vertebrates (humans and other animals) by Diptera larvae, whose occurrence and etiological identification are still neglected by health professionals. Here we analyzed the human myiasis cases registered from 2010 to 2018 in health care units in the municipality of Natal, Northeast region of Brazil. Specifically, we aimed to: I) analyze the medical records of cases documented from 2010 to 2017; II) list the patients predisposing factors; and III) monitor the recent cases diagnosed in health units between August 2017 and March 20

Geographical Distribution, Biodiversity, and Species Richness of Medically Important Necrophagous Flies in Central Iran.

There have been some investigations carried out about necrophagous flies and their biodiversity indices in Iran. In the present study, the species composition of flies, their richness, and biodiversity were investigated in central Iran. In a cross-sectional study, specimens were collected monthly in three different climate areas of Qom Province. Species diversity, species richness, and species evenness were calculated to estimate the species biodiversity of flies. In total, 7,291 flies were collected and identified using valid identification keys that classified flies into four families and 15

Evolution of coding sequence and gene expression of blowflies and botflies with contrasting feeding habits.

The Oestroidea superfamily is characterized by the diversity of feeding preferences among closely-related species; these flies are saprophagous, obligate parasites, or facultative parasites. We used gene expression and coding sequence data from five species (Cochliomyia hominivorax, Chrysomya megacephala, Lucilia cuprina, Dermatobia hominis, and Oestrus ovis) to identify underlying genetic differences involved in the diverse lifestyles. We tested whether 1287 orthologs have different expression and evolutionary constraints under different scenarios. We found two up-regulated genes; one in spec

Cutaneous myiasis in neglected patients with autoimmune bullous disorders: a case series.

Cutaneous myiasis is an infestation of the tissues and organs of living vertebrates and humans by fly larvae, usually those belonging to the Calliphoridae family. The larvae feed on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Pre-existing dermatological conditions and poor hygiene are predisposing factors for cutaneous myiasis, which is especially common among neglected, dependent patients. Our literature search revealed only a few case reports of cutaneous myiasis in autoimmune bullous disorders (AIBDs). Cutaneous myiasis is more common in the population of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu beca

Prevalence of external parasites in the south eastern desert of Egypt.

External parasites in the triangle region (Halaib & Shalatin) affecting the animal health were studied. Ectoparasites were collected in several sites by using bait traps and directly from animal bodies. Results indicated the presence of twelve species of insects belonging to seven genera included in three families (Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae). Concerning ectoparasites on animal bodies, there were two species of biting lice infested goats and sheep (Bovicola caprae and B. ovis, respectively) and two species of sucking lice on goats (Linognathus africanus and L. stenopsis). This study amied to elucidate the case of an older patient suffering from aural myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata. An 81-year-old female patient with a history of middle ear surgery and dementia presented with bleeding in her right ear and visible worms. Upon initial examination, a larva was found crawling on the right auricle. Further examination revealed numerous larvae, purulent otorrhea, and active bleeding in the external auditory canal and mastoid cavity. All larvae were successfully removed with ear irrigation. The patient was diagnosed with otitis media and treated with antibiotic ear

Lysenko and the Screwworm Fly-When Politics Interferes with Science and Public Health.

In the One Health scenario, a deep understanding of the dynamics potentially threatening the development and implementation of useful pest and vector management tools is of key importance. The New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is characterized by a wide host range. It acts as an important agent of myiasis in humans and warm-blooded animals in the Neotropics, and has been eliminated from a wide region through genetic methods. Of note, Serebrovsky had already proposed in 1940 the principles of autocidal control by the translocation of segments

Maggot infestation leading to Ignatzschineria larvae bacteremia and bladder outlet obstruction.

We report a case of a 61-year-old man with a history of alcoholic cirrhosis and impaired mobility who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with hepatic encephalopathy, cellulitis, sepsis, and extensive maggot infestation (myiasis). Maggots were recovered from the patient's skin, urethra, and rectum, and the burden of maggots in the urethra had led to bladder outlet obstruction. Blood cultures revealed polymicrobial bacteremia, including Ignatzschineria larvae. Ignatzschineria larvae is a commensal bacterium that resides in the digestive tract of maggots. The organism is rarely pathogenic

Furuncular myiasis by Cordylobia anthropophaga in three Italian children: First case series and implications for non-endemic regions.

Cordylobia anthropophaga, commonly known as the tumbu fly, is a leading cause of cutaneous myiasis in sub-Saharan Africa. This condition is characterized by a papulopustular lesion that evolves in a painful boil-like nodule with central ulceration. Human infestations typically occur on covered body parts, due to the fly's habit of laying eggs on damp clothing. This report describes the first cluster of three pediatric cases of furuncular myiasis caused by C. anthropophaga, diagnosed at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital (Rome, Italy) between April 2024 and April 2025. All patients had recent

Unusual bot fly larva removed from the scalp of a returning traveler.

An aberrant bot fly specimen was removed from the scalp of a patient 3 wk after returning from Belize. The specimen showed little resemblance to the typical human bot fly larva, Dermatobia hominis, prompting a molecular identification using cytochrome oxidase I and II (COI and COII, respectively) mitochondrial DNA sequence regions. A BLAST search was subsequently performed, and both our COI and COII amplicon sequences showed 99-100% match with Dermatobia hominis, despite the specimen's clearly aberrant morphology. These findings suggest there is much wider variation in Dermatobia larval morpho

Development of a diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel for identifying geographic origins of Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screwworm.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, causes myiasis in livestock, humans, and other warm-blooded animals in much of South America and the Caribbean. It has been eradicated from North and Central America using the sterile insect technique and a biological barrier is currently maintained at the Panama - Colombian border. However, C. hominivorax is still a threat to eradicated areas as outbreaks can and do occur. In order to identify the origin of a fly involved in an outbreak scenario, diagnostic tools would be beneficial. Recently, the geographic population structure of this specie

Human Oro-Nasopharyngeal Myiasis by Chrysomya Bezziana (Old-World Screwworm): The First Reported Case in Sri Lanka.

Myiasis is the invasion of mammalian tissues by dipterous larvae. Cutaneous myiasis is the commonest type, and less commonly, internal tissues and organs are affected. Here, we report the first case of oro-nasopharyngeal myiasis caused by the third-instar larvae of Chrysomya bezziana (Old-World screwworm) in Sri Lanka. A retired 71-year-old female tea-plucker presented to the hospital with a 4-day history of nasal bleeding and neck discomfort. Except for well-controlled hypertension, she had no significant medical history. On examination, there was an ulcerated area in the posterior oro-nasoph

Canine intestinal pseudomyiasis by blow flies and first documented case report caused by Lucilia cuprina in Central America.

Pseudomyiases occur when vertebrates ingest eggs or larvae of flies that survive gastrointestinal passage and may result in pathological reactions, but they are usually unable to continue their life cycle in the host. Many blow fly species (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are associated with facultative cutaneous myiasis in humans and animals; however, very few cases of blow fly pseudomyiasis have been published in animals. In this report, two cases of canine pseudomyiasis caused by blow flies are documented, and Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann was confirmed as the species responsible in one of them. It is

Nosocomial nasal myiasis in an intensive care unit.

A 73-year-old Chinese man was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Premorbid Ward of a local hospital in Malaysia. The patient complained of shortness of breath with cough and was in a semi-conscious state. He was later admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. Six days after admission 5-6 maggots were recoverd from the nasal cavity. The maggots were identified as the third-instar larvae of Lucilia cuprina Wiedmann (Diptera: Calliphoridae) based on the morphological characteristics. This patient was classified as having nosocomial myiasis. The presence of the third instar lar
