Controlling one's world: Identification of sub-regions of primate PFC underlying goal-directed behavior.

Impaired detection of causal relationships between actions and their outcomes can lead to maladaptive behavior. However, causal roles of specific prefrontal cortex (PFC) sub-regions and the caudate nucleus in mediating such relationships in primates are unclear. We inactivated and overactivated five PFC sub-regions, reversibly and pharmacologically: areas 24 (perigenual anterior cingulate cortex), 32 (medial PFC), 11 (anterior orbitofrontal cortex, OFC), 14 (rostral ventromedial PFC/medial OFC), and 14-25 (caudal ventromedial PFC) and the anteromedial caudate to examine their role in expressin

Congenital digital aplasia in a free-ranging group of silvery marmosets, Mico argentatus.

Congenital aplasia of the hallux (big toe) was observed in seven adult and infant members of a free-ranging group of silvery marmosets (Mico argentatus) in the Alter do Chão savannah of central Amazonia. Apparently heritable, the condition was more common in males (80%) than females (50%) but was found in no other members of the population. Animals with the condition presented normal behaviour.

A new device for the capture and transport of small nonhuman primates in scientific research.

Conventional methods of capturing marmosets and other small nonhuman primates (NHPs) require prolonged physical contact between animals and their handlers. This causes NHPs to become stressed and exhausted and can put both animals and handlers at risk of injury or exposure to infectious diseases. The authors designed a self-contained device for the capture and transport of small NHPs. Food rewards encourage primates to enter the device independently, and handlers can then easily access the animals for routine veterinary or experimental procedures. Preliminary observations suggest that marmoset

Post-mortem diagnosis of human rabies in SARS-CoV-2 coinfected patient with minimally invasive autopsy in northeastern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Human rabies (HR) is a lethal zoonotic disease caused by lyssaviruses with increase in the number of cases post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODOLOGY: We report a case of human rabies in a patient from a rural area of Ceará, northeastern Brazil in 2023, who was bitten by a white-tufted-ear marmoset (Callithrix jacchus jacchus). The patient was co-infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and was diagnosed by minimally invasive autopsy (MIA). RESULTS: MIA offers many advantages related to biosafety, and speed of sample acquisi

Natural behavior relaxes zoning divisions in the brain.

Technological advances allow neurophysiologists to explore the brain during natural behaviors, revealing new functional principles and challenging old ones. In this issue of Neuron, Li1 and colleagues show that the traditional parcellation of the marmoset frontal cortex does not apply to naturalistic conversations.

Fast prediction in marmoset reach-to-grasp movements for dynamic prey.

Primates have evolved sophisticated, visually guided reaching behaviors for interacting with dynamic objects, such as insects, during foraging.1,2,3,4,5 Reaching control in dynamic natural conditions requires active prediction of the target's future position to compensate for visuo-motor processing delays and to enhance online movement adjustments.6,7,8,9,10,11,12 Past reaching research in non-human primates mainly focused on seated subjects engaged in repeated ballistic arm movements to either stationary targets or targets that instantaneously change position during the movement.13,14,15,16,1

Distribution of macrophages in the developing cochlea of the common marmoset, a primate model animal.

INTRODUCTION: Macrophages are essential immune cells in the cochlea that contribute to inflammation, tissue repair, and homeostasis. They also play an important role in local cochlear immunity. The developmental immigration and maturation of macrophages in the cochlea have been investigated and are considered essential for normal hearing acquisition. Most of our current knowledge regarding cochlear development is based on rodent models because of the ethical challenges of using human fetal samples for research. However, inter-species differences between rodents and humans have been reported. I

A natural marmoset model of genetic generalized epilepsy.

Epilepsy has been extensively studied as a common neurological disease. Efforts have been made on rodent and other animal models to reveal the pathogenic mechanisms of epilepsy and develop new drugs for treatment. However, the features of current epilepsy models cannot fully mimic different types of epilepsy in humans, hence non-human primate models of epilepsy are required. The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a New World monkey that is widely used to study brain function. Here, we present a natural marmoset model of generalized epilepsy. In this unique marmoset family, generalized epi

Intraintestinal Analysis of the Functional Activity of Microbiomes and Its Application to the Common Marmoset Intestine.

The intestinal microbiome is closely related to host health, and metatranscriptomic analysis can be used to assess the functional activity of microbiomes by quantifying microbial gene expression levels, helping elucidate the interactions between the microbiome and the environment. However, the functional changes in the microbiome along the host intestinal tract remain unknown, and previous analytical methods have limitations, such as potentially overlooking unknown genes due to dependence on existing databases. The objective of this study is to develop a computational pipeline combined with ne

Male genital organs of the black-crowned dwarf marmoset (Callibella humilis).

This study provides the first morphological description of the male genital organs of black-crowned dwarf marmoset (Callibella humilis). Internal and external genital organs were similar to other species of non-human primates. However, some shape and size differences were noted. The penile shaft was laterally flattened and comprised of two corpus cavernosus. These were split by a septum up to the level of the glans and then merged to form a single structure. The glans penis had small, keratinized spicules arising from epidermal or dermal projections. The small, fully ossified and well-minerali

Age-related alteration of taste bud distribution in the common marmoset.

Alteration in the number of taste buds on the soft palate (SP), fungiform (FF), foliate (FL) and circumvallate (CV) papillae in the common marmoset at different postnatal ages was examined histologically. After paraffin embedding, complete serial sections at 10 microm thickness were made and stained by HE. Digitized images for each section were examined carefully. The number of FF taste buds at day 1 was 334. While only 20% of all the taste buds at birth possessed a taste pore, 39% of 174 SP taste buds at day 1 possessed a taste pore. The number of taste buds with pores at day 1 was small for

Ultrasonographic examination in non-human primates with acute abdomen signs.

BACKGROUND: The acute abdomen is any abdominal disorder resulting in pain, shock, or sepsis. Although it has a multifactorial etiology, the primary cause is gastrointestinal tract pathology. The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of abdominal ultrasound as a complementary diagnostic tool in non-human primates with an acute abdomen. METHODS: Three different non-human primates with clinical signs of acute abdomen were evaluated as follows: a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), a tufted capuchin (Cebus apella), and a black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata). RESULTS: Ultrasonograp

Experimental video analysis of eye blink reflex in a primate model.

BACKGROUND: The establishment of reliable methods for functional assessment in experimental models of peripheral nerve regeneration is crucial. METHODS: We present a straightforward method for video analysis of the eye blink reflex in a model of facial nerve damage in a nonhuman primate (Callithrix sp.). RESULTS: Our 6-level dynamic analysis demonstrated good reproducibility between independent observers, as measured by Cohen's kappa index. Our static analysis, which was based on 4 semiautomated metric parameters, showed low correlation during the early stage of facial movement recovery (the

Development of a model of hookworm infection exhibiting salient characteristics of human infection.

Patent and pathologic infections of the human hookworm Necator americanus were established in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). In a pilot study, a laboratory strain of N. americanus was compared with a fresh field isolate. Pathology was more severe in animals infected with a fresh isolate. In all animals, infection was associated with increased total plasma IgE and production of IgG specific to adult worm excretory/secretory (ES) products. Histamine was released by basophils in response to IgE, ES products, and a recombinant hookworm allergen, calreticulin. The pilot study indicated t

Callitrichid nutrition and food sensitivity.

Captive callitrichids are prone to developing intestinal problems. Their captive and natural diets differ enormously, and diet has been suggested to play a major role in wasting marmoset syndrome. Proteins in wheat, soy and milk are included in callitrichid diets of most colonies and have been linked to an immune reaction in Saguinus oedipus and Callithrix jacchus. In the present study of 23 males and females of the two species, wheat protein was tested but soy and milk products were excluded. One group had wheat and the other had rice in their diet. Blood samples and biopsies from the colon w

Establishment and characterization of a chronic infectious mononucleosislike syndrome in common marmosets.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was inoculated into two species of marmosets. Successful infection was established in the majority of the animals of one species, Callithrix jacchus, as evidenced by the development of high, persistent levels of antibody against virus-specific capsid and early nonstructural proteins. Antibodies also were produced against the major membrane antigen and, in some animals, against EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA) 2 but not against EBNA 1. This is the antibody profile normally noted in individuals with chronic infectious mononucleosis (IM). EBV-induced lymphoproliferation was not

Case report: Urbanized non-human primates as sentinels for human zoonotic diseases: a case of acute fatal toxoplasmosis in a free-ranging marmoset in coinfection with yellow fever virus.

Free-ranging non-human primates (NHP) can live in anthropized areas or urban environments in close contact with human populations. This condition can enable the emergence and transmission of high-impact zoonotic pathogens. For the first time, we detected a coinfection of the yellow fever (YF) virus with Toxoplasma gondii in a free-ranging NHP in a highly urbanized area of a metropolis in Brazil. Specifically, we observed this coinfection in a black-tufted marmoset found dead and taken for a necropsy by the local health surveillance service. After conducting an epidemiological investigation, ch

A Robust Microbead Occlusion Model of Glaucoma for the Common Marmoset.

PURPOSE: To establish a robust experimental model of glaucoma in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a New World primate, using an intracameral microbead injection technique. METHODS: Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was induced by an injection of polystyrene microbeads. Morphologic changes in the retina and optic nerve of glaucomatous eyes were assessed and electroretinogram (ERG) recordings were performed to evaluate functional changes. RESULTS: Microbead injections induced a sustained IOP elevation for at least 10 weeks in a reproducible manner. At the end of the 10-week experime

Differential Effects of the Inactivation of Anterior and Posterior Orbitofrontal Cortex on Affective Responses to Proximal and Distal Threat, and Reward Anticipation in the Common Marmoset.

Structural and functional abnormalities of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) have been implicated in affective disorders that manifest anxiety-related symptoms. However, research into the functions of primate OFC has predominantly focused on reward-oriented rather than threat-oriented responses. To redress this imbalance, the present study performed a comprehensive analysis of the independent role of 2 distinct subregions of the central OFC (anterior area 11; aOFC and posterior area 13; pOFC) in the processing of distal and proximal threat. Temporary inactivation of both aOFC and pOFC heightened
