Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among American women. Known risk factors account for only approximately one-third of the 182,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. There is both concern and debate over the contribution of environmental exposures related to lifestyle, occupation, and ambient pollution, particularly in high risk areas such as Long Island, NY and the rest of the northeastern United States. Several metals such as arsenic, beryllium, chromium and nickel are carcinogenic to man when they occur in certain well-defined physicochemical forms. Isolated cases of careless handling of industrial and domestic waste has lead to a wide variety of dangerous chemicals being inadvertently introduced into drinking water. Inhibitory effects of pyrazole on the carcinogenicities of 2 large-bowel carcinogens, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) and azoxymethane (AOM), were examined, because our previous study revealed that pyrazole completely inhibited the induction of mutations by these carcinogens in the host-mediated mutation assay. Evidence is presented that opium addition is a risk factor for cancer of the bladder. A case-control study of 99 bladder cancer patients admitted to Nemazee Hospital in Shiraz, Iran was evaluated. Cancer patients and controls, matched by age and sex, were analyzed as to their opium and/or cigarette smoking habits. A high correlation between opium addiction and bladder cancer has been observed. N-nitrosomethylurea (NMU) given intravenously to rats at age 50 days induced mammary carcinomas in 89% of BUF/N, 73% of Sprague-Dawley, and 89% of F344 females.
