Cardiac Catheterization Post Congenital Cardiac Surgery: Analysis of Risk Factors for Mortality and Literature Review.

Background Diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization plays a significant role in the management of congenital heart defects with acceptable risks. Its role has also evolved in sick children but is associated with higher risks due to technical difficulties and co-morbidity factors. Some of the post-cardiac surgery children who show resistance to conventional management during the early postoperative period usually have residual defects or obstructions. Trans-catheter intervention (TCI) in such high-risk circumstances and relatively sick children is challenging, demands much expertis

This article presents the findings of the Spanish Society of Cardiology registry of cardiac catheterization and interventional cardiology in the year 2004. Data were obtained from 121 centers, which comprise almost all cardiac catheterization laboratories in Spain. Of these, 110 performed catheterization mainly in adults, and 11 carried out procedures in only pediatric patients. In 2005, 111,451 diagnostic catheterization procedures were performed, including 97,785 coronary angiograms. This was 6.6% higher than in 2003. The population-adjusted rate was 2263 coronary angiograms per million inha

One-hundred-and-three centers contributed data, all the cardiac catheterization laboratories in Spain; 97 centers performed mainly adult catheterization and 6 carried out only pediatric procedures. In 2001, 95,430 diagnostic catheterization procedures were performed, with 79,607 coronary angiograms, representing a total increase of 8.4% over 2000. Pulmonary Hypertension in Pediatric Patients with Noonan Syndrome Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization.

Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with a high incidence of cardiovascular disease. We investigated pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients with NS, characterizing the prevalence, genetic, and clinical features including hemodynamics, cardiovascular interventions, and transplant-free survival. A retrospective, descriptive cohort study was conducted among pediatric patients with NS who underwent cardiac catheterization. Patient demographic, clinical, and hemodynamic data were collected for cohorts of patients with and without PH. We identified 87 patients

Iatrogenic Massive Coronary Artery Dissection During Cardiac Catheterization: A Case Report.

Cardiac catheterization is an invasive procedure done for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes to assess coronary artery disease (CAD) and valvular diseases. Although complications rarely occur, they are possible. Of those complications, iatrogenic coronary artery dissection during a coronary catheterization is infrequent and can be severe. This case report discusses a 59-year-old female presenting to the emergency department for sudden onset chest pain, found to have a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and underwent a left heart catheterization (LHC). During the LHC, she sustain

A case series of forearm compartment syndrome complicating transradial cardiac catheterization.

BACKGROUND: Acute compartment syndrome following a transradial coronary approach is rare. However, as the incidence of coronary arterial disease increases due to lifestyle factors and multiple comorbidities, transradial coronary angiography has become more common for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in cardiovascular centers. Despite its rarity, we encountered two cases of acute compartment syndrome within a 1-week interval in the cardiology unit of a tertiary hospital. CASE PRESENTATION: The first case involved a 75-year-old woman diagnosed with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NST

Cardiac Catheterization via Direct Access of Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Circuit.

Obtaining arterial access for cardiac catheterization can be both challenging and morbid in patients supported by venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). While catheterization performed by obtaining endovascular access through the ECMO circuit itself has been described, all previous cases utilized a Y-connector and accessory tubing limb. We report a novel technique whereby arterial access was obtained directly via standard VA-ECMO arterial return tubing, through which coronary angiography was successfully performed in a 67-year-old woman. This technique may reduce the incid

Late massive radial artery pseudoaneurysm following cardiac catheterization: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Transradial artery approach for cardiac catheterization was first introduced in the late 1980s and has now become the approach of choice due to its anatomical advantage, reduction in complications, and overall improved patient experience. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 77 year-old female who presented with an extremely rare and late complication of radial artery pseudoaneurysm after transradial coronary intervention. The patient presented at a post-procedural follow-up with severe pain at the radial access site and was found to have a partially thrombosed pseudoaneury

Operators' radiation exposure reduction during cardiac catheterization using a removable shield.

Cardiac catheterization through radial access is associated with significant ionizing radiation exposure for the operator. We aimed at evaluating whether a removable shield placed upon the patient could impact favorably on annual radiation exposure for the operator. We designed a pre-post study comparing radiation exposure in a total of five operators under standard protection procedures (first period) and after applying a removable shield (second period). Each period included all the procedures performed in 1 year. Radiation exposure was measured through three dosimeters on each operator. A t

Epinephrine stress testing during cardiac catheterization in patients with aortic coarctation.

BACKGROUND: The severity of aortic coarctation (CoA) may be underestimated during cardiac catheterization. We aimed to investigate whether epinephrine stress testing improves clinical decision making and outcome in CoA. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated CoA patients >50 kg with a peak systolic gradient (PSG) ≤20 mm Hg during cardiac catheterization who underwent epinephrine stress testing. Subsequent interventional management (stenting or balloon dilatation), complications, and medium-term clinical outcome were assessed. RESULTS: Fifty CoA patients underwent cardiac catheterization with
