Healing of dehiscence defects following root surface demineralization with tetracycline: a histologic study in monkeys.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to histologically evaluate the healing of experimental dehiscence defects after surface demineralization with tetracycline hydrochloride. METHODS: Six adult male monkeys (Cebus apella) were used in this study. Dehiscence defects were surgically created on the buccal aspect of the mandibular lateral incisors in all animals. The root surfaces were debrided and planed. In a split-mouth design, a 10% tetracycline hydrochloride solution was applied to one tooth for 4 minutes (T group), followed by irrigation with saline. The contralateral tooth served as a

Mammalian wildlife diseases as hazards to man and livestock in an area of the Llanos Orientales of Colombia.

Development of the LLanos Orientales of Colombia, and access to underdeveloped areas in the Llanos, may create disease hazards to man and domestic animals or introduce exotic pathogens, creating reservoirs of infection for domestic animals and acting as limiting factors on the native wild species. A survey of wild animals common to the Llanos revealed a number of parasites indigenous to the area. A total total of 59 mammalian species, representing eight orders were examined. Haematozoa were represented by Trypanosoma cruzi, T. evansi and T. rangeli. Eight species of ticks were found: Amblyomma

Peripheral and transcortical loops activated by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve in the monkey.

Peripheral and supraspinal loops activated by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve were studied in alert monkeys. Weak conditioning stimuli below the threshold for muscle contraction and strong conditioning stimuli which elicited a direct motor response and an H-reflex were applied to the tibial nerve, while soleus EMG was recorded. The motoneuronal excitability was measured with a test H-reflex for different intervals between conditioning and test stimuli. A facilitation of the motoneuronal pool occurred with a latency of about 50 ms for weak, as well as strong, conditioning stimuli. Th

The first case of clade I Candida auris candidemia in a patient with COVID-19 in Japan.

Candida auris is a health hazard because of its antifungal resistance and the potential to cause healthcare-associated outbreaks. To our knowledge, no previous cases of candidemia caused by C. auris have been reported in Japan. Herein, we report the first known case of clade I C. auris candidemia in a Japanese man with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection who was medically evacuated from the Philippines. A 71-year-old Japanese man traveled to Cebu Island in the Philippines 5 months before admission to our hospital. He contracted severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Co

Do environments in infancy moderate the association between stress and inflammation in adulthood? Initial evidence from a birth cohort in the Philippines.

Chronic inflammation is a potentially important pathway through which psychosocial stressors increase risk for cardiovascular disease. However, prior research on stress and inflammation has been conducted almost exclusively in high income, industrialized populations with low levels of infectious disease. In this study we test the hypothesis that psychosocial stressors are associated with elevated concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) among young adults in the Philippines (n=1622), who have grown up in an ecological and epidemiological setting that differs substantially from that of the US

Genome-wide association study of homocysteine levels in Filipinos provides evidence for CPS1 in women and a stronger MTHFR effect in young adults.

Plasma homocysteine (Hcy) level is associated with cardiovascular disease and may play an etiologic role in vascular damage, a precursor for atherosclerosis. We performed a genome-wide association study for Hcy in 1786 unrelated Filipino women from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS). The most strongly associated single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs7422339, P = 4.7 x 10(-13)) encodes Thr1405Asn in the gene CPS1 and explained 3.0% of variation in the Hcy level. The widely studied MTHFR C677T SNP (rs1801133) was also highly significant (P = 8.7 x 10(-10)) and explained

Size at birth and growth trajectories to young adulthood.

Few studies in developing countries follow growth trajectories from birth to adulthood. Such studies are important because size at birth and postnatal growth affect risk of chronic disease in adulthood. This study examines the inter-relationships of maternal factors during pregnancy, infant birth weight and length, early postnatal growth, and young adult height, weight, BMI, and skinfold thicknesses, with particular attention to patterns of growth associated with increased chronic disease risk. Women were recruited in pregnancy, and offspring were followed from birth to age 21 in the community

The Multiple Representations of Complex Digit Movements in Primary Motor Cortex Form the Building Blocks for Complex Grip Types in Capuchin Monkeys.

In the present study, we investigated motor cortex (M1) and a small portion of premotor and parietal cortex using intracortical microstimulation in anesthetized capuchin monkeys. Capuchins are the only New World monkeys that have evolved an opposable thumb and use tools in the wild. Like most Old World monkeys and humans, capuchin monkeys have highly dexterous hands. We surveyed a large extent of M1 and found that ~22% of all evoked movements in M1 involved the digits, and the majority of these consisted of finger flexions and extensions. Different subtypes of movements could be identified, in

Impact of chronodisruption during primate pregnancy on the maternal and newborn temperature rhythms.

Disruption of the maternal environment during pregnancy is a key contributor to offspring diseases that develop in adult life. To explore the impact of chronodisruption during pregnancy in primates, we exposed pregnant capuchin monkeys to constant light (eliminating the maternal melatonin rhythm) from the last third of gestation to term. Maternal temperature and activity circadian rhythms were assessed as well as the newborn temperature rhythm. Additionally we studied the effect of daily maternal melatonin replacement during pregnancy on these rhythms. Ten pregnant capuchin monkeys were expose

Preclinical evaluation of brimonidine.

Preclinical studies of brimonidine show that it is a potent alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist that is 1000-fold more selective for the alpha 2-vs. the alpha 1-adrenoceptor, and is 7-12-fold more alpha 2-selective than clonidine and 23- to 32-fold more alpha 2-selective than apraclonidine (p-aminoclonidine). Brimonidine decreased intraocular pressure (IOP) in various animal models but, unlike apraclonidine, brimonidine was not mydriatic. The site and pharmacology of the IOP response depends on the animal species. In rabbits, the IOP response to brimonidine is mediated by an ocular alpha 2-adrenocept

Plasmodium vivax interaction with the human Duffy blood group glycoprotein: identification of a parasite receptor-like protein.

The interaction between merozoites of the human pathogen, Plasmodium vivax, and the Duffy blood group glycoprotein on the surface of human erythrocytes is essential for the invasion of erythrocytes and the survival of the parasite. We have identified a P. vivax protein of 135 to 140 kDa which binds with receptor-like specificity to the human Duffy blood group glycoprotein. This interaction can be specifically inhibited by purified Duffy glycoprotein and by pretreating erythrocytes with a monoclonal antibody directed against a novel Duffy determinant. A protein with similar specificity for the

A transcortical loop demonstrated by stimulation of low-threshold muscle afferents in the awake monkey.

1. The hypothesis that a transcortical loop can be activated by electrical stimulation of low-threshold muscle afferents was tested. The effect of these afferents on the excitability of motoneurones was measured with the monosynaptic spinal reflex (H-reflex).2. Four monkeys were trained to maintain a constant tonic activity in the soleus muscle so that the amplitude of evoked H-reflexes was constant. The intensity of conditioning stimuli was just subthreshold for direct or reflex electromyographic responses. The intensity of the test stimuli was adjusted to evoke an H-reflex of maximal amplitu

Long-term antibody dynamics challenge the paradigm of lifelong homotypic immunity to dengue virus.

Immunity following infection with the four dengue virus serotypes (DENV1-4) remains difficult to define. Reports of individuals being reinfected with the same serotype challenge the paradigm that infection induces lifelong homotypic immunity. However, the frequency of these events and their importance for shaping immune profiles remain unknown. Here, we used data from three cohorts (N = 4,268 total participants) in two highly endemic settings (Cebu, Philippines, and Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand), which included long-term follow-up of individuals (mean follow-up of 8.8, 1.9, and 5.0 y). These data

The Effects of Lifestyle Intervention Using the Modified Beliefs, Attitude, Subjective Norms, Enabling Factors Model in Hypertension Management: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a serious health issue and a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Although various health education models have been used to improve lifestyle in patients with hypertension, the findings have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the effects of a lifestyle intervention program using a modified Beliefs, Attitude, Subjective Norms, Enabling Factors (BASNEF) model among nonadherent participants with hypertension in managing elevated blood pressure (BP) levels. METHODS: This study reports a quantitative quasi-experimental re

Environmental predictors of filarial infection in Amazonian primates: Ecological factors and primate filarial infection.

Filarial nematode infections are common in primates, but have received little attention in the Neotropics. Epidemiological data on filarial infections in primates are still too sparse to fully understand the complex of this parasitism, especially because of the difficulty in studying the ecology and epidemiology of wild primates.. We describe natural infections by Dipetalonema parasitizing 211 primates belonging to eight free-living primate genera in Amazonia, and assess the relationships between parasitic indicators and climatic (rainfall and river level), ecological (fruiting periods of plan

Molecular evolution of trichromacy in primates.

Although trichromacy in Old and New World primates is based on three visual pigments with spectral peaks in the violet (SW, shortwave), green (MW, middlewave) and yellow-green (LW, longwave) regions of the spectrum, the underlying genetic mechanisms differ. The SW pigment is encoded in both cases by an autosomal gene and, in Old World primates, the MW and LW pigments by separate genes on the X chromosome. In contrast, there is a single polymorphic X-linked gene in most New World primates with three alleles coding for spectrally distinct pigments. The one reported exception to this rule is the

Seroprevalence of selected flaviviruses in free-living and captive capuchin monkeys in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and, more recently, Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) have a great impact in the public health. In addition, the presence of such viruses might have an impact on wild animal conservation as well as their possible role as animal reservoir. Here, we performed a serological survey searching for antibodies against a panel of flaviviruses [ZIKV, Dengue virus (DENV), Yellow Fever virus (YFV), West Nile virus (WNV), Saint Louis Encephalitis virus (SLEV), Ilheus virus (ILHV) and Rocio virus (ROCV)] using plaque reduction neutralization

Chronic hepatitis in experimental schistosomiasis.

Histological features of chronic active and chronic persistent hepatitis were observed in mice, rabbits and non-human primates infected with either Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum. In early infection hepatitis appeared as a reactive change due to liver damage caused by the deposition of schistosome eggs, but portal and septal cellular infiltrations tended to remain long after parasite aggression had diminished or disappeared, either spontaneously with time or after chemotherapy. In rabbits, and to a lesser degree in monkeys, a picture of chronic active hepatitis was present, with
