To reveal optimal antibiotic prophylactic regimen for postoperative endophthalmitis (POE), we conducted systematic review and network meta-analysis. A small prospective trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a single antibiotic regimen, Augmentin, compared with a combination regimen of cefuroxime and metronidazole in the treatment of serious post-operative sepsis. Both regimens used were effective against Bacteroides and other anaerobes, with a similar satisfactory cure rate and no serious side effects. The interactions of cefdinir, a new orally-active third-generation cephalosporin, with cell-free beta-lactamase preparations were studied in comparison with some other beta-lactams. Cefdinir was very resistant to narrow-spectrum Ambler's class A beta-lactamases, as it was for other oximino beta-lactams: cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefixime and cefuroxime.
