Trends in mortality and biological stress in a medieval polish urban population.

Urbanization in pre-modern populations may have had a variety of consequences related to population crowding. However, research on the effects of urbanization have provided inconsistent results regarding the biological impact of this transition on human populations. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that urbanization caused an increase in overall biological stress in a medieval (10th-13th centuries AD) Polish population. A human skeletal sample (n=164) was examined for the presence of porotic hyperostosis, cribra orbitalia, linear enamel hypoplasia, periosteal reaction, and s

Molecular detection of Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum in 150-year-old foetal remains, southeastern France.

PURPOSE: Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum , is considered as an old disease affecting humans; traces of such infections, including congenital syphilis, are potentially identifiable in archaeological samples. The aim of this research was to perform macroscopic and molecular investigations of T. pallidum on six infant remains, buried between 1837 and 1867, from the cemetery of 'Les Crottes' in Marseille city (southeastern France). METHODOLOGY: Pathological analysis of bones from individuals, aged from the twenty-ninth week of amenorrhea to 4-9 months, was performed. Sa

Flight initiation distance and refuge in urban birds.

Risk-taking in birds is often measured as the flight initiation distance (FID), the distance at which individuals take flight when approached by a potential predator (typically a human). The ecological factors that affect avian FID have received great attention over the past decades and meta-analyses and comparative analyses have shown that FID is correlated with body mass, flock size, starting distance of the approaching human, density of potential predators, as well as varying along rural to urban gradients. However, surprisingly, only few studies (mainly on reptiles and mammals) have explor

Violence in the first millennium BCE Eurasian steppe: Cranial trauma in three Turpan Basin populations from Xinjiang, China.

OBJECTIVES: Violence affected daily life in prehistoric societies, especially at conflict zones where different peoples fought over resources and for other reasons. In this study, cranial trauma was analyzed to discuss the pattern of violence experienced by three Bronze to early Iron Age populations (1,000-100 BCE) that belonged to the Subeixi culture. These populations lived in the Turpan Basin, a conflict zone in the middle of the Eurasian Steppe. METHODS: The injuries on 129 complete crania unearthed from the Subeixi cemeteries were examined for crude prevalence rate (CPR), trauma type, ti

Yersinia pestis strains from Latvia show depletion of the pla virulence gene at the end of the second plague pandemic.

Ancient genomic studies have identified Yersinia pestis (Y. pestis) as the causative agent of the second plague pandemic (fourteenth-eighteenth century) that started with the Black Death (1,347-1,353). Most of the Y. pestis strains investigated from this pandemic have been isolated from western Europe, and not much is known about the diversity and microevolution of this bacterium in eastern European countries. In this study, we investigated human remains excavated from two cemeteries in Riga (Latvia). Historical evidence suggests that the burials were a consequence of plague outbreaks during t

National and Sub-National Pediatric Cancer Mortality in Iran, 2000-2015.

BACKGROUND: Cancer, a common disease in adulthood, is a rare albeit slowly increasing condition among children. Currently, limited data are available on the incidence, prevalence, and mortality of these diseases in many regions, including developing countries. Herein, we are reporting national and sub-national estimates on deaths due to childhood cancers between 2000 and 2015 in Iran. METHODS: Cancer mortality rates were estimated using the national death registration system's data after addressing its incompleteness and misclassification, using demographic (complete birth history and summary

Annual Trends of Gastrointestinal Cancers Mortality in Iran During 1990-2015; NASBOD Study.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) neoplasms are among the most common cancers in Iran. This study aimed to measure annual trends in mortality rates from GI cancers in Iran between 1990 and 2015. METHODS: This study was part of an ongoing study termed the 'National and Subnational Burden of Diseases' study in Iran. Data used in this study was obtained from the Iranian Death Registration System (1995 to 2010) and from 2 major cemeteries in Tehran (1995 to 2010) and Isfahan (2007 to 2010). All-cause mortality rates were estimated using the spatio-temporal model and the Gaussian process regressio

Dwarfs in ancient Egypt.

Ancient Egypt was one of the most advanced and productive civilizations in antiquity, spanning 3000 years before the "Christian" era. Ancient Egyptians built colossal temples and magnificent tombs to honor their gods and religious leaders. Their hieroglyphic language, system of organization, and recording of events give contemporary researchers insights into their daily activities. Based on the record left by their art, the ancient Egyptians documented the presence of dwarfs in almost every facet of life. Due to the hot dry climate and natural and artificial mummification, Egypt is a major sou

Brief communication: co-detection of Bartonella quintana and Yersinia pestis in an 11th-15th burial site in Bondy, France.

Historical and anthropological data suggest that skeletons excavated from an 11th to 15th century mass grave in Bondy, France, may be those of victims of the Great Plague. Using high-throughput real-time PCR investigation of the dental pulp collected from 14 teeth from five such skeletons, we detected Bartonella quintana DNA in three individuals and Yersinia pestis DNA in two individuals. DNA from five other deadly pathogens was not found. Suicide PCR genotyping confirmed Y. pestis DNA belonging to the Orientalis biotype. One individual had co-infection. These data suggest a plague epidemic in

Two Saccharopolyspora isolates from archaeological excavation sites: polyphasic taxonomy, biosynthetic potential, bioactivity profiling and description of Saccharopolyspora antiqui sp. nov.

Archaeological excavation sites represent underexplored microbial habitats with the potential to recover taxonomically and biotechnologically valuable actinomycetes. In this study, two Saccharopolyspora strains, 5N708T and 5N102, were isolated from soil samples collected from the Gaziantep-Doliche-Dülük and Bitlis-Ahlat-Selçuklu Cemetery archaeological excavation sites in Türkiye. A polyphasic taxonomic approach, including 16S rRNA gene sequencing, phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses, average nucleotide identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridization, phenotypic characterization, and chemotaxonomic

The plague of Athens (430-427 BC): Integration of historical, clinical, and ancient DNA data supports an invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica etiology.

The Plague of Athens represents one of the earliest and most detailed descriptions of a large-scale epidemic in recorded history. Emerging in 430 BC during the second year of the Peloponnesian War, it caused extensive mortality, including the death of Pericles, the leader of Athenian democracy at the time. Thucydides, the famous historian, provides an eyewitness account with a rich clinical narrative encompassing symptomatology, complications, mortality rates, epidemic dynamics, post-infection immunity, and animal involvement. In this narrative review, we integrate Thucydides' account with mod

Genomic characterization of historical Jinlingnan individuals: insights into genetic continuity and trans-Eurasian signals in eastern China.

The genetic impact of historically documented trans-Eurasian interactions in China remains poorly understood due to the scarcity of genome-wide ancient DNA data. This study presents genome-wide SNP data from 10 individuals excavated from the Jinlingnan cemetery in Zibo City, Shandong Province, dating from the Tang (618-907 AD) to the Qing (1644-1912 AD) dynasties. Although located in the agricultural heartland of eastern China rather than along major Silk Road corridors, the site provides a valuable context for investigating the integration of non-local populations into inland societies. Archeometric detection of mercury: A paleopharmacological case study of skeletal remains of a child with vitamin deficiencies (Rouen, France, late 18-19th centuries).

OBJECTIVE: The French medico-historical literature reports the common use of mercury-based treatments until the mid-19th century. An exploratory paleopharmacological approach is presented for detecting mercury in a child's skeletal remains suffering from vitamin deficiencies. This aims to corroborate written sources and provide a way to better understand disease therapeutic management. MATERIALS: This study focuses on a 3-4-year-old child showing signs of rickets and possible scurvy from "rue Thubeuf" cemetery (Rouen, late 18-19th centuries). Analysis was carried out on a thoracic vertebral b

Known unknowns and the osteological paradox: Why bioarchaeology needs agent-based models.

OBJECTIVE: This paper demonstrates computational modeling's value as a tool for mapping the impact of hidden variables and evaluating the accuracy of statistical methods in bioarchaeology. MATERIALS: As a working example, this paper presents an agent-based model of a 1,000-person cohort of individuals who can form an unspecified skeletal lesion at any age between birth and ten years and enter a simulated cemetery at the end of their lives. Skeletal lesions either have no effect on mortality risk (scenario 1) or are associated with doubled mortality risk (scenario 2). METHODS: The agent-based

New radiocarbon dates of human tooth enamel reveal a late appearance of farming life in the indus Valley.

The domestication of plants and animals is believed to have commenced around 9500 BCE in the Near East. If the timing of the westward diffusion of the Neolithic transition is well documented, the precise mechanisms by which agriculture emerged between the Iranian Plateau, Central Asia, and South Asia remain unclear. In this context, the archaeological site of Mehrgarh (Pakistan) represents an essential point of reference. It is the sole site in the region where Neolithic occupation deposits have been extensively excavated, thereby providing the most essential insights into this period in north

Shift in the seasonality of ixodid ticks after a warm winter in an urban habitat with notes on morphotypes of Ixodes ricinus and data in support of cryptic species within Ixodes frontalis.

This study was initiated to assess the seasonality and to investigate the morphology of questing ixodid ticks in an urban habitat in Central Europe, Hungary. A neglected part of a large cemetery, with sparse tree covering and dense lower vegetation, was sampled monthly from February 2019 to May 2021. All ticks were analyzed morphologically, and selected specimens by amplifying and sequencing two genetic markers. During the study 3818 ticks were collected, including Ixodes ricinus (n = 2772), Ixodes frontalis (n = 350) and Haemaphysalis concinna (n = 696). Ixodes ricinus adults and nymphs showe

Macroscopic determination of the pre-burning condition of human remains recovered from an unusual forensic context: A case report.

Understanding the taphonomic process of burning allows forensic practitioners to better interpret remains and reconstruct the burning incident in a medicolegal investigation. This can yield critical information, especially when other details, such as the biological profile, are obscured by fire. A forensic case involving human remains recovered within a Greek Orthodox cemetery that exhibited a distinctive pattern of differential burning is reported. The bones exhibited a range of differential burning in a pattern inconsistent with the anatomical position of the remains during heat exposure. No

Osteophytes: The product of convergent evolution.

The very reasonable suggestion, that diarthrodial joint and juxta-discal (vertebral centra-marginal) bony overgrowths (referred to as osteophytes) have different etiologies, has eluded previous confirmation. The prevailing perspective is that diarthrodial osteophytes represent the product of compressive forces and that those on the margins of vertebral centra result from traction and therefore are enthesial in derivation. If diarthrodial joint osteophytes result from intrinsic pressures, any surface responses would require transcortical nutritional support, easily recognized by en face microsc

Anarcha, Betsey, Lucy, and the women whose names were not recorded: The legacy of J Marion Sims.

In April 2018, a statue commemorating J Marion Sims was removed from Central Park, New York, and relocated to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, where he is buried. In 1849, Sims developed a repeatable surgical solution for obstetric fistula, a debilitating condition caused by prolonged, obstructed labour, which damages the vaginal wall, resulting in permanent leakage via the vagina from either the bowel or bladder and sometimes both. Initially, Sims appears worthy of widespread adulation. There are several commemorative statues of him, he has been afforded the title of the 'father of modern gyn
