A study of 192 strains of Coagulase negative staphylococcus (CONS) showed that Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common species, 158 (82.29%) isolated from all clinical specimens followed by S. saprophyticus (30, 15.62%) isolated mainly from urine. Slime production was exhibited by 77 (48.7%) strains of S. epidermidis and 8 (26.6%) of S. saprophyticus and the difference in the slime producing activity was statistically significant (p< 0.005). The study covers 78 children with typhoid fever who were hospitalized in April & May 1990. Serious complications were present in 32% (toxemia 22%, ileus 25% and myocarditis 8%). Blood cultures were positive in 30 of 49 tested. Others were diagnosed by positive Widal test. Oral cefaclor is rapidly absorbed in patients with a shortened gastrointestinal tract (23 cm). A case is reported of a 27-month-old female child who had received oral cefaclor for five days in treatment of otitis media. The child had had a bowel resection at birth. She did not respond to oral therapy with cefaclor and was admitted to the hospital, where she received cefamandole intramuscularly. The patient recovered in five days. Drug sensitivity of Salmonella typhi isolated from 25 blood culture positive cases of typhoid fever who presented between May and July 1990 was tested to determine their in vitro susceptibility to various antimicrobials. Patterns of antimicrobial resistance were studied for 213 strains of shigellae isolated in rural and urban areas of Michigan by quantitative techniques: 66% of these organisms were resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, cephalexin, or chloramphenicol or had multiple resistance to various combinations of these antibiotics. CTX-M beta-lactamases are one of the most important extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) resistance enzymes found in E. coli.
