Methemoglobinemia, a condition associated with cyanosis and diminished pulse oximetry values, has been reported after use of local anesthetics to facilitate fiberoptic intubation. The majority of reports in the literature detail this development during diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy and bronchoscopy. A case of methemoglobinemia in a multiple-injury patient with an unstable compressive-flexion injury of the cervical spine undergoing fiberoptic intubation is presented. OBJECTIVE: Aim to explore the association of dyslipidemias with GBP prevalence, number and size in a large Chinese population in Beijing. Dyslipidemias include hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, increased low density lipoprotein (LDL) and decreased high density lipoproteins (HDL).
METHODS: Prevalence of GBP and its association with dyslipidemias were retrospectively investigated among subjects who underwent check-up at Health Screening Center of Xuanwu Hospital between January 2014 and December 2017.

Severe cyanosis resulting from acquired methemoglobinemia after application of a topical anesthetic, Cetacaine spray, occurred in a 37-year-old patient following bronchoscopy for postoperative atelectasis. Response to methylene blue therapy was dramatic and complete. Attention is drawn to a dangerous adverse effect of this commonly used topical anesthetic agent.

Thirty-seven patients with alimentary toxicoinfections were examined. The values of central and peripheral circulation and the fluid spaces were determined by one-stage dilution of two indicators, T-1824 and sodium thiosulfate. The capillary blood flow was studied by means of bulbar microscopy in reflected light. A deficit of interstitial fluid prior to treatment and disorder of microhemo- and lymphocirculation were revealed. Infusion of a crystalloid blood substitute with an optimum volume and rate increased capillary filtration and corrected the transinterstitial metabolism.

In two seriously ill patients, cyanosis developed shortly after a topical anesthetic spray (Cetacaine) was used. In both cases the presence of methemoglobinemia was suggested by a discrepancy between the arterial oxygen tension and the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin, as measured spectrophotometrically. The characteristic responses of the spectrophotometric oximeter to blood containing different concentrations of methemoglobin are described. Physicians administering this topical anesthetic spray (Cetacaine) should be aware of the possible development of methemoglobinemia.

Mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (PHT-PMO) have been prepared from an octa-triethoxysilylated Zn phthalocyanine precursor. These PHT-PMO nanoparticles had no dark toxicity but high phototoxicity when irradiated at 650 nm, and remarkable near-infrared phototoxicity when excited at 760 and 810 nm. The PHT-PMO were then aminated to promote electrostatic complexation with siRNA. Transfection experiments were performed upon NIR irradiation and photochemical internalization was very efficient, leading to 65% luciferase extinction in MCF-7 cancer cells expressing stable luciferase.

Postcopulatory genital autogrooming was studied in rats following desensitization of the glans penis due to topical application of an anesthetic ointment or to surgical transection of the dorsal penile nerve. These treatments sharply reduced the number of mounts resulting in intromission, but genital autogrooming was largely unaffected.
