Families' Public and Private Safety Nets and Child Mental Health Outcomes Among Families Involved with Child Protective Services.

The mental health of children is a growing public health concern, and the prevalence and severity of mental health symptoms are significantly higher for children whose families are involved with child protective services (CPS). Among families in the general population, a strong family safety net can help guard against risks and promote child mental health; however, research on the safety nets of families involved with CPS is limited. Using the family stress model as a theoretical foundation, we conducted growth curve analyses to determine the extent to which different categories of family safe

Reprint of: Maternal adverse childhood experiences, child resilience factors, and child mental health problems: A multi-wave study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that maternal ACEs have intergenerational consequences for offspring mental health. However, very few studies have investigated moderators of this association. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this longitudinal study was to examine whether child resilience factors moderated the association between maternal ACEs prior to age 18, and child-reported symptoms of anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and inattention. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The current study used data from 910 mother-child dyads. Participants were recruited in pregnancy from 2008 to 2010 as part of a lon

The relationship between child protection contact and mental health outcomes among Canadian adults with a child abuse history.

Despite being a primary response to child abuse, it is currently unknown whether contact with child protection services (CPS) does more good than harm. The aim of the current study was to examine whether contact with CPS is associated with improved mental health outcomes among adult respondents who reported experiencing child abuse, after adjusting for sociodemographic factors and abuse severity. The data were drawn from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (CCHS-2012), which used a multistage stratified cluster design (household-level response rate = 79.8%). Included in thi

Integrating community health workers in early childhood well-child care: a statement from the Pediatric Academic Societies Maternal Child Health: First 1,000 days Special Interest Group.

This statement from the Pediatric Academic Societies Maternal Child Health: First 1,000 Days Special Interest Group provides an overview of the rationale, evidence, and key action steps needed to engage Community Health Workers (CHWs) into team-based well-child care (WCC) for families in low-income communities. CHWs have been defined as public health workers who have a trusted and valued connection to a community. Integrating CHWs into early childhood WCC can allow for greater cultural relevancy for families, reduce the burden on clinicians to provide the wide range of WCC services, many of wh

Maternal mental health and risk of child protection involvement: mental health diagnoses associated with increased risk.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that maternal mental illness is an important risk factor for child maltreatment. This study aims to quantify the relationship between maternal mental health and risk of child maltreatment according to the different types of mental health diagnoses. METHODS: The study used a retrospective cohort of children born in Western Australia between 1990 and 2005, with deidentified linked data from routine health and child protection collections. RESULTS: Nearly 1 in 10 children (9.2%) of mothers with a prior mental health contact had a maltreatment allegation. Alte

Parental Stigma and "Good Parenting" in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

OBJECTIVE: Parents of children with mental health problems often experience judgment about their parenting. Such stigma is associated with lower parental well-being and greater child symptom severity. Theory-driven descriptions of and interventions for parental stigma are limited. The authors aimed to investigate how parents experience and cope with stigma via the What Matters Most framework. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 24 parents (50% women, mean±SD age=39.8±8.6 years) of children ages 6-17 with depression (N=9), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (N=7), or substance use pr

Implications of Federal Nutrition Policy Changes for Maternal and Child Health.

Signed into law on July 4, 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) fundamentally changes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the largest food assistance program in the United States and a key support for maternal and child food and nutrition security. The OBBBA reduces SNAP eligibility, expands work requirements, eliminates nutrition education, prevents future benefit increases, and shifts significant costs to states. Combined, these changes may have a direct negative effect on women and children who rely on SNAP for adequate nutrition and may also reduce their access to

Social Determinants of Health and Child Welfare Outcomes in NCANDS Data.

Social Determinant of Health (SDoH) Indices, such as the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) or the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), are increasingly used in child maltreatment research either to explore the degree which SDoH is associated with maltreatment or as a control variable to more accurately understand other associations of interest. To date, however, there have been no published explorations of which SDoH measures are most predictive of child maltreatment outcomes. This paper compares a range of publicly available SDoH measures in terms of their ability to explain variability in rates in N

Hardship-Free Households Are Associated With Optimal Caregiver and Child Health.

INTRODUCTION: Families living with low incomes experience a higher risk of material hardships associated with poor health. To understand the potentially protective role of hardship-free households, the authors examined associations between the absence of material hardships among families with low incomes and child health and healthcare utilization and caregiver health outcomes. METHODS: Researchers interviewed a sentinel sample of caregivers of publicly insured children aged <4 years in hospital settings in 5 U.S. cities (2012-2017). Exposure to material hardships (food insecurity, housing in

Maternal and child predictors of vascular health in infancy and early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Excessive weight gain (EWG) in childhood may increase cardiovascular disease risk in adulthood, but its relationship to early vascular health remains poorly understood. This study investigated the relationship between EWG and aortic intima-media thickness (aIMT), a non-invasive ultrasound imaging marker of early vascular health, and explored maternal and child factors that may influence growth and aIMT during early childhood. METHODS: Mother-child pairs from the BABY1000 pilot cohort were followed from early pregnancy to 24 months. Maternal and birth data were collected via questi

Microbial dysbiosis and associated disease mechanisms in maternal and child health.

Maternal and infant microbiome dysbiosis is associated with poor health outcomes-gut, vaginal, and placental microbiome disruptions in the gut, vaginal, and potentially placental microbiomes-though the existence of a distinct placental microbiome remains controversial-have been linked to pregnancy difficulties and neonatal infections. Dysbiosis leads to inflammation, oxidative stress, and disruptions in the gut-brain axis, which in turn affect immunological control, metabolic balance, and neurodevelopment. Maternal age, antibiotic exposure, and cesarean delivery increase microbial imbalances,

Associations of breastfeeding with maternal and child health outcomes: umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding (BF) has been reported to be beneficial for both mothers and their offspring, but the evidence for these associations has not been systematically evaluated. OBJECTIVES: This umbrella review aims to assess the credibility of existing evidence regarding the associations between BF and health outcomes in mothers and offspring. METHODS: For each health outcome, evidence levels were determined using reanalyzed random-effects estimates, between-study heterogeneity, 95% predictive intervals, publication bias, small-study effects, and excess significance bias. Child Health and the US Pediatric Subspecialty Workforce: Planning for the Future.

This article opens a multi-article Pediatrics supplement that provides a rigorous analysis of the projected pediatric subspecialty workforce in the United States. Congenital variations, epigenetics, exposures, lifestyle, preventive care, and medical interventions from conception through young adulthood set the stage for health and wellbeing in adulthood. Although care provided by pediatric subspecialists is associated with better outcomes and lower costs compared with adult providers, the authors of recent articles in the lay and medical literature have questioned the capacity of pediatric sub

Expand and extend postpartum Medicaid to support maternal and child health.

Most early maternal deaths are preventable, with many occurring within the first year postpartum (we use the terms "maternal" and "mother" broadly to include all individuals who experience pregnancy or postpartum and frame our recognition of need and policy recommendations in gender-neutral terms. To acknowledge limitations inherent in existing policy and the composition of samples in prior research, we use the term "women" when applicable). Black, Hispanic, and Native American individuals are at the most significant risk of pregnancy-related death. They are more commonly covered by Medicaid,

The Effect of Obesity and Pregnancy Weight Gain on Maternal and Child Health.

In this study, we estimate the effect of prepregnancy obesity and excessive pregnancy weight gain on infant and maternal health outcomes. We rely on a large sample of maternally linked restricted data from 2004 to 2019 South Carolina birth certificates, which allow us to track the same mothers during multiple pregnancies over a period of more than 15 years. To address possible limitations of previous research, we account for genetic confounders and unobservable maternal and environmental factors by relying on a maternal fixed effects strategy. We find that gaining above recommended amounts of
