[Nutritional problems perceived by pediatricians in Spanish children younger than 3 years].

INTRODUCTION: Parents are most responsible for nutritional education of children, and pediatricians must advise and help them with their doubts. The purpose of this study was to know the relevance of nutritional topics in daily practice and the main nutritional problems perceived by pediatricians in children under 3 years of age. METHODS: Descriptive, cross-sectional study performed in 2 stages. First stage consisted on discussion meetings with 30 random-selected pediatricians from Madrid and Barcelona. Results were used to design the on-line questionnaire of the second stage (76 questions re

Acute Malnutrition in Children: Pathophysiology, Clinical Effects and Treatment.

Acute malnutrition is a nutritional deficiency resulting from either inadequate energy or protein intake. Children with primary acute malnutrition are common in developing countries as a result of inadequate food supply caused by social, economic, and environmental factors. Secondary acute malnutrition is usually due to an underlying disease causing abnormal nutrient loss, increased energy expenditure, or decreased food intake. Acute malnutrition leads to biochemical changes based on metabolic, hormonal, and glucoregulatory mechanisms. Most children with primary acute malnutrition can be manag

Malnutrition Among Children Under Five in Djibouti: A Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure Analysis from the 2023 Multisectoral Survey.

Background/Objectives: Child undernutrition remains a major public health in Djibouti, yet conventional anthropometric indicators may underestimate its true burden by failing to capture overlapping forms of malnutrition. The Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) provides a more comprehensive assessment by identifying children experiencing one or multiple anthropometric deficits. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among children under five years of age in Djibouti using the CIAF. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of data from the

Risk factors and regional variations of malnutrition among children under 5 in Myanmar: cross-sectional analyses at national and subnational levels.

OBJECTIVE: The levels, distributions of child malnutrition and its potential risk factors are not very well known in Myanmar. The objectives included in this study were: to estimate the current national and subnational prevalence of four types of malnutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight and overweight) among children under 5 in Myanmar; to identify potential risk factors associated with each type of malnutrition and to investigate how the identified risk factors' distributions explained the regional disparities in malnutrition prevalence. DESIGN/METHODS: Data from the Myanmar Demographic

Association of Malnutrition with Subsequent Malaria Parasitemia among Children Younger than Three years in Kenya: A Secondary Data Analysis of the Asembo Bay Cohort Study.

Malaria and malnutrition remain primary causes of morbidity and mortality among children younger than 5 years in Africa. Studies investigating the association between malnutrition and subsequent malaria outcomes are inconsistent. We studied the effects of malnutrition on incidence and prevalence of malaria parasitemia in data from a cohort studied in the 1990s. Data came from the Asembo Bay cohort study, which collected malaria and health information on children from 1992 to 1996 in western Kenya. Infants were enrolled at birth and followed up until loss to follow-up, death, end of study, or 5

Influences of dehydration on clinical features of radiological pneumonia in children attending an urban diarrhoea treatment centre in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: As the signs of dehydration often overlap with those of pneumonia, it may be difficult for health workers in resource-poor settings to make a clinical diagnosis of pneumonia in children with dehydration. This issue has received very little attention. AIM: To compare the clinical features of pneumonia in children with and without dehydration caused by diarrhoea. METHODS: All children aged 2-59 months with diarrhoea and radiologically confirmed pneumonia admitted to the Special Care Ward (SCW) of Dhaka Hospital, ICDDR,B between September and December 2007 were enrolled for the stud

How to approach feeding difficulties in young children.

Feeding is an interaction between a child and caregiver, and feeding difficulty is an umbrella term encompassing all feeding problems, regardless of etiology, severity, or consequences, while feeding disorder refers to an inability or refusal to eat sufficient quantities or variety of food to maintain adequate nutritional status, leading to substantial consequences, including malnutrition, impaired growth, and possible neurocognitive dysfunction. There are 6 representative feeding disorder subtypes in young children: infantile anorexia, sensory food aversion, reciprocity, posttraumatic type, s

The impact of the Schmetterling NBI Program on selective eating behavior: evaluation of creative therapeutic interventions across three families of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently exhibit selective eating behaviors characterized by food refusal and limited dietary variety, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies and impaired family functioning. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Schmetterling Nutritional Behavior Intervention (NBI) Program, a creative behavioral intervention integrating established behavioral strategies with innovative components, including imitation chaining, shaping, and therapist-guided exoskeleton modeling. Three children (YW, RA, and JK) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (A

What is missing in our understanding of urban slum environments and maternal, infant and young child nutrition from publicly available data in Asia and the Pacific?

Given the recent, rapid urbanisation in Asia and the Pacific region, coupled with increases in the triple burden of malnutrition, we need to better understand maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) for populations living in urban slum environments. This research used existing large-scale datasets to explore MIYCN indicators for those living in urban slum, compared with urban nonslum, areas. Data since 2015 from available Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS; Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan and the Philippines) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS; Bangladesh

Feeding Disorders in Children With Tracheostomy Tubes.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to describe feeding dysfunction in a group of children with tracheostomy. METHODS: Single-center, retrospective chart review of all children with a tracheostomy who were evaluated by our interdisciplinary feeding program. Demographic and diagnostic data, nutrition variables, acceptance of food consistencies, as well as 2 validated psychometric instruments for assessment of feeding dysfunction were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirteen tracheostomy-dependent children (5/13; 38% ventilator dependent) were evaluated at a median age of 51 months (interquartile range [IQR], 26-69). The

The impact of oedema on anthropometric measurements in nutritional surveys: a case study from Zaire.

Six surveys for protein-energy malnutrition were carried out in sequence in Bas-Zaire beginning at the end of 1978 at the estimated height of the famine and continuing throughout the recovery period. Utilizing a stratified multi-stage sampling technique, over 1000 children aged 6 months to 6 years were measured anthropometrically and examined for the presence or absence of bilateral pedal oedema in each survey. The proportions of children who were less than 80% of the reference median weight-for-height and who had oedema decreased, respectively, from 12.8% and 14.4% initially to 2.1% and 1.8%

Trace minerals in paediatric gastroenterology: zinc and copper.

A number of aspects of zinc and copper metabolism are relevant in the clinical practice of pediatric gastroenterology. Although the diagnosis of zinc and copper deficiency is problematic, deficiencies and altered metabolism of these two nutrients are seen in a host of hepatic and intestinal diseases of childhood. Several medical and surgical interventions can adversely affect zinc and copper nutriture as well. Continuing scientific research into the biology of zinc and copper will provide new insights into the pathophysiology of pediatric gastrointestinal diseases.
