[Tumors affecting the temporomandibular joint - a literature review].

Benign and malign tumors can affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as any other articulation. Nevertheless, TMJ tumors are rare and mostly benign. Their clinical expression is varied including symptomatology similar to TMJ dysfunctional disorders, otologic or neurologic pathologies. In some cases, they remain totally asymptomatic. Hence, diagnosis is difficult since the symptomatology can be misleading with TMJ dysfunctional disorders or otologic disorders wrongly diagnosed. There is thus frequently a long delay between symptoms onset and diagnosis. The great variety of TMJ lesions explains

Benign Bone Conditions That May Be FDG-avid and Mimic Malignancy.

Positron emission tomography with the radiotracer 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) plays an important role in the evaluation of bone pathology. However, FDG is not a cancer-specific agent, and knowledge of the differential diagnosis of benign FDG-avid bone alterations that may resemble malignancy is important for correct patient management, including the avoidance of unnecessary additional invasive tests such as bone biopsy. This review summarizes and illustrates the spectrum of benign bone conditions that may be FDG-avid and mimic malignancy, including osteomyelitis, bone lesions due to ben

USP6 and CDH11 oncogenes identify the neoplastic cell in primary aneurysmal bone cysts and are absent in so-called secondary aneurysmal bone cysts.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a locally recurrent bone lesion that has been regarded as a reactive process. Recently, a neoplastic basis in primary ABC was evidenced by demonstration of clonal chromosome band 17p13 translocations that place the USP6 (TRE2 or TRE17) oncogene under the regulatory influence of the highly active CDH11 promoter. Herein, we report CDH11 and/or USP6 rearrangements in 36 of 52 primary ABCs (69%), of which 10 had CDH11-USP6 fusion, 23 had variant USP6 rearrangements without CDH11 rearrangement, and three had variant CDH11 rearrangements without USP6 rearrangement. USP6

[Tumors of the footbones- a report from the Hamburg Bone Tumor Registry].

Aim of the present study was a systematic examination of the tumors of the foot registered in the Hamburg Bone Tumor Registry regarding age, sex, location, diagnosis and morphological characteristics. The registry files and histological specimens of 367 tumors and tumor-like lesions of the foot were reviewed. Males were more frequently affected (ratio 4 : 3). Some 20.4 % of all mass forming tumors were malignant. Cartilage tumors (146 cases), cystic (132 cases) and osteoblastic lesions (33 cases) were most common. Several tumors showed a strong predilection for certain parts of the foot. In th

Cryosurgery and acrylic cementation as surgical adjuncts in the treatment of aggressive (benign) bone tumors. Analysis of 25 patients below the age of 21.

This article reviews the clinical experience with cryosurgery (use of liquid nitrogen) and acrylic cementation (polymethylmethacrylate; PMMA) in the treatment of aggressive, benign bone sarcomas and the biologic basis of this technique. The results of 25 patients below the age of 21 treated by cryosurgery, with an average follow-up period of 60.8 months, are reported. Three approaches to surgical reconstruction were used: Group 1 (four patients) had cryosurgery with no reconstruction, Group 2 (13 patients) had bone graft reconstruction alone, and Group 3 (eight patients) had composite osteosyn

Somatic mutations of the MEN1 gene and microsatellite instability in a case of tertiary hyperparathyroidism occurring during high phosphate therapy for acquired, hypophosphatemic osteomalacia.

Somatic mutations of the MEN type 1 (MEN1) gene were recently shown to be responsible for tumorigenesis in 13-26% of sporadic, nonfamilial primary hyperparathyroidism. However, it is unknown whether these mutations are also involved in tumorigenesis of parathyroid glands occurring during high phosphate therapy for hypophosphatemic rickets or osteomalacia. A male patient with adult-onset, hypophosphatemic osteomalacia had been treated with 1alpha-OHD3 and oral phosphate for 13 yr when tertiary hyperparathyroidism developed. After total resection of four enlarged parathyroid glands and autotrans

Spinal chondromyxoid fibroma of C2.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of bone (CMF) is a rare benign primary bone neoplasm accounting for less than 0.5% of all primary bone neoplasms. The spine is an uncommon site for this tumour, with forty-two cases reported in the modern English literature. They have clinical features similar to CMF arising at other sites. Local recurrence is well documented. We report an incidentally discovered lytic lesion of the C2 vertebra. The patient underwent stereotactic CT guided trans-oral curettage of the lesion with iliac bone graft and anterior fusion of C2 and C3. Microscopic examination of the surgical spe

Intracranial chondromyxoid fibroma. Report of a case and review of the literature.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is an unusual benign tumor of cartilaginous derivation. We describe a rare example of chondromyxoid fibroma of the frontal-sphenoid junction with orbital infiltration in a 35-year-old Hispanic woman who presented with frontal headaches. Gross total excision was performed. The excised mass was composed of neoplastic cells with chondrocytic features within a myxoid matrix. Bony infiltration was present without infiltration of dura mater or brain tissue. The lack of mitotic activity, low cell density, lack of nuclear pleomorphism, and a fused lobular architectural pattern in

Aneurysmal Bone Cyst-cloaked Codman's Tumor in the Patella: Case Report of an Easily Misdiagnosed Entity.

INTRODUCTION: Chondroblastomas (CB) are rare benign cartilaginous tumors (1%) arising from secondary ossification centers in epiphysis of long bones, commonly the proximal humerus. They commonly occur in the 2nd decade of life and have a male predilection. The occurrence of these tumors in the patella is extremely rare (<2%). CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male presented with knee pain since 2 months, which aggravated with activities. Radiographic evaluation showed an osteolytic lesion along the superolateral pole of patella, which was hypointense on T1 and hyperintense on T2 along with multiple

Histone H3K27M Mutation in Brain Tumors.

Histones form chromatin and play a key role in the regulation of gene expression. As an epigenetic information form, histone modifications such as methylation, phosphorylation, acetylation, and ubiquitination are closely related to the regulation of genes. In the last two decades, cancer scientists discovered that some histone modifications, including acetylation and methylation, are perturbed in cancer diseases. Recurrent histone mutations, which hinder histone methylation and are implicated in oncogenesis, are recently identified in several cancer disease and called oncohistones. Well-known

Significance of Biogenetic Markers in Giant Cell Tumor Differentiation and Prognosis: A Narrative Review.

Background: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a locally aggressive tumor. It accounts for only 5% of all bony tumors. Early diagnosis, and follow-up for recurrence is often difficult due to a lack of biogenetic markers. Giant cells are multinucleated epithelioid cells derived from macrophages. Histologically, giant cells are also present in other pathologies of bone, e.g., aneurysmal bone cyst, chondroblastoma, giant cell granuloma, and malignant giant cell tumor, etc. Similarly, radiographic findings overlap with other osteolytic lesions, making the diagnosis and prognosis of giant cell tumo

Is formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue good enough for studies of transmission electron microscopy of tumors? a comparative study with wet tissue.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has historically been pivotal in diagnosing neoplasms with challenging histopathology. However, its use has declined due to cost and the advent of ancillary techniques like immunohistochemistry. This study compares the diagnostic utility of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue versus wet glutaraldehyde-paraformaldehyde fixed tissue (WT) for TEM in neoplasms. A retrospective analysis of 746 cases (2014-2023) from the National Cancer Institute of Mexico - Instituto Nacional de Cancerología de Mexico (INCan) was performed. Cases were divided into G

New Insight in Pediatric Orthopedic Oncology: The Use of a Xeno-Hybrid Bone Substitute in Loss of Bone Tissue After Oncological Resections, a Case Series.

Background: The management of bone defects in pediatric oncology represents a major challenge in orthopedics, as it requires preserving both joint function and skeletal growth. Traditional reconstructive approaches, such as autografts and allografts, are limited by availability, complications, and incomplete biological integration. In this context, xeno-hybrid bone substitutes have emerged as a promising alternative. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of SmartBone® ORTHO in the reconstruction of post-oncological bone defects in children. Methods: Twelve pediatri
