Chondosarcoma of the proximal femur is a rare malignant disorder in women of (pre-) childbearing age, for which a radical resection through a hemipelvectomy could be indicated. We describe a case of a 36-year-old primigravida with a hemipelvectomy (2004) who had a history of radiotherapy of the pelvic and uterine regions after an atypical cartilaginous tumour. After an uncomplicated pregnancy, she had a spontaneous rupture of the membranes at 41+2 weeks and an uncomplicated vaginal delivery with physiological development of the infant. On the basis of the literature review, vaginal delivery af

The cytokine Oncostatin M (OSM) is cytostatic, pro-apoptotic and induces differentiation of osteosarcoma cells into osteocytes, suggesting new adjuvant treatment for these bone-forming sarcomas. However, OSM systemic over-expression could lead to adverse side effects such as generalized inflammation, neoangiogenesis and osteolysis. We determine here the effect of OSM on chondrosarcoma, another primary bone sarcoma characterized by the production of cartilage matrix and altered bone remodelling. Chondrosarcomas are resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and wide surgical excis

Chondrosarcoma of the skull base is a rare tumour with a good prognosis following surgical resection. We describe a patient with low-grade chondrosarcoma of the skull base with intradural extramedullary spinal metastases. A 31-year-old female with grade 1 chondrosarcoma involving the cavernous sinus, sphenoid wing and clivus presented at age 19. The tumour was subtotally excised at initial surgery and over the following 4 years, 3 subsequent resections were undertaken for tumour progression followed by proton beam radiotherapy to the residual tumour. The patient re-presented with cervical radi

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma rarely subjected to cytologic analysis. With the exception of a few small series, the cytology literature of EMC is largely limited to single-case reports. The purpose was to evaluate the cytomorphology of 8 EMC cases as obtained by imprint/scrape cytology and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, to review the literature, and to demonstrate the utility of cytogenetic analysis in the diagnosis of EMC.
METHODS: The cytology files were reviewed for all soft-tissue lesions signed out as chondrosarcoma, myxoid sarc

We report a case of retroperitoneal chondrosarcoma in which preoperative radiological study induced to a possible diagnosis of sacral schwannoma. A 25-year-old woman was admitted to our neurosurgical institute for a progressive sciatic pain with gait difficulties with a sudden radicular deficit with right positive Lasegue's sign at 30 degrees, loss of Achilles reflex, sensory deficit on right S1 dermatome, and complete motor deficit of right plantar flexion. We performed an en bloc removal of the lesion via an anterior retroperitoneal approach. We believe that the treatment of choice is radica

PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to bring to light this unusual combination of two rare diseases, namely Neimann-Pick disease Type B and clear cell chondrosarcoma occurring in the same patient. This has not previously been reported in the world literature.
SUBJECT: Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) is a rare autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism. Type B NPD is even rarer. It is a lysosomal storage disorder affecting children and adolescents often causing death in early childhood, although in milder form patients may survive up to adulthood, like our patient. Clear cell chondrosar

A case is presented of a 3-year-old boy with a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma extending from the 1st to the 5th lumbar vertebra. This is the youngest case of a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma located outside the skeleton or in the C.N.S. After assumed total excision with subsequent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, local tumor recurrence and (later) systemic metastases were detected. Standard therapy should include radical excision because of the high incidence of local recurrence and subsequent radiotherapy because of the expected high incidence of tumor cells in the CSF. The value of chemotherapy cannot

Chondrosarcoma is one of the most common primary malignant bone tumors and typically metastasizes hematogenously, most frequently to the lungs. Peritoneal dissemination is an exceptional presentation, usually associated with dedifferentiated subtypes or tumor rupture, and lacks standardized management strategies. We report the case of a 27-year-old male who presented with a large pelvic-abdominal mass and severe left lower-limb edema. Imaging revealed a large calcified tumor arising from pelvic zone III. Biopsy suggested a grade 1 conventional chondrosarcoma. The patient underwent an intraperi

Chondrosarcomas (ChSs) are mesenchymal chemo- and radiation-resistant tumors, representing the second most frequently diagnosed bone sarcoma after osteosarcoma and 20% of all bone sarcomas. Most of ChS patients have a good prognosis after complete surgical resection. Conversely, patients with inoperable disease, due to the tumor location or metastatic dissemination, represent a great clinical challenge due to the lack of effective therapeutic options. In this study, to the best of our knowledge, we document, for the first time in human ChS tissues, the existence of CD-31- and Podoplanin-negati

Conventional and dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma encompass a group of malignant neoplasms that produce cartilaginous matrix and arise within or on the surface of bone. Conventional chondrosarcomas are graded on a three-tiered scale, whereas dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma is typically not graded but is considered a high-grade sarcoma and represents the most aggressive subtype with a poor prognosis. IDH1 (isocitrate dehydrogenase-1) and IDH2 (isocitrate dehydrogenase-2) are the most commonly mutated genes in conventional and dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma, followed in frequency by COL2A1 and T

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcomas are cartilaginous tumors primarily known for metastasizing to the lungs and bones. Their spread to the central nervous system is infrequent.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 32-year-old woman with a history of pelvic/sacral grade III chondrosarcoma (L4-S2; T3N0MX; Ki67; 30%), who underwent surgical resection and radiotherapy. She presented to the emergency department with a 2-day history of thunderclap headache accompanied by fever and chills. Computed axial tomography (CT) scan revealed a left occipital intraparenchymal lesion, subsequently confirmed

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumour with a high local and distant metastasis rate and limited response to chemotherapy. Meckel's diverticulum is the most frequent congenital anomaly, and it is associated with a considerable risk of malignant transformation. In this case report, we describe a 50-year-old female patient with a history of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the lower limb and metastasis to the forearm who went to the emergency department with abdominal pain. The investigations revealed a caecal volvulus. A lesion in the middle third of the ileum wa

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a rare cartilaginous tumour that occurs in the extraskeletal locations in about one-third of cases. It is aggressive in behaviour and may involve the lower extremities, central nervous system or spine. Mesenchymal tumours are known for distant metastasis; however, metastasis to bilateral kidneys after treatment has not been reported earlier. We present a case of a soft-tissue intramuscular MC of the thigh in a 38-year-old patient which had been surgically excised after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The patient presented with bilateral dense calcified renal masses

Chondrosarcomas are a spectrum of tumors with variable clinical behavior, histologically classified as grades I, II, and III.1 Maximal surgical resection with adjuvant radiation is the gold standard for grade III malignant tumors.2,3 Lower-grade skull base chondrosarcomas have a slow progressive local growth pattern with an overall benign profile.1,4 In these grade I and II tumors, radical resection can be sufficient in achieving long-term control of the disease without the need for adjuvant therapy, thus avoiding the long-term side effects of irradiation in relatively young patients.4,5 As a

A 42-year-old man with multiple comorbidities, including gout, presented to the emergency department with severe odynophagia for 4 days with intermittent dysphagia for 1-2 months. A CT scan of the neck showed right longus colli tendinitis and partially calcified excrescences from the right thyroid cartilage which raised suspicion of a cartilaginous tumour. He underwent an MRI scan of the neck to better evaluate the thyroid cartilage findings, which showed a heterogeneous mass suspicious for a chondroid tumour. He then underwent a positron-emission tomography-CT scan which showed a fluorodeoxyg

Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon benign neoplasm that usually affects large appendicular joints and only rarely the spine. There are only a few small series and case reports documenting malignant transformation of synovial chondromatosis into secondary chondrosarcoma, typically within the hip in the setting of recalcitrant disease and multiple recurrences. Chondrosarcoma arising in synovial chondromatosis of the spine is exceedingly rare, with only one previously published case report involving the craniocervical junction. We present a case of chondrosarcoma arising within synovial chond
