Tilapia tilapinevirus or tilapia lake virus (TiLV) is an emerging virus that inflicts significant mortality on farmed tilapia globally. Previous studies reported detection of the virus in multiple organs of the infected fish; however, little is known about the in-depth localization of the virus in the central nervous system. Herein, we determined the distribution of TiLV in the entire brain of experimentally infected Nile tilapia. In situ hybridization (ISH) using TiLV-specific probes revealed that the virus was broadly distributed throughout the brain. The strongest positive signals were domi

Streptococcus spp. are major pathogenic bacteria associated with massive mortality in tilapia. This study investigated the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) and Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) isolated from tilapia in river-based floating cage and earthen pond farms in northern Thailand. Isolates were identified by biochemical and molecular analyses. Capsular typing, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction and multilocus sequence typing were performed to investigate the genetic relatedness. Six and one isolates were con

Hyperosmotic stress can adversely affect fish immunity, but little is known about the histological and transcriptomic responses of immune organs in fish in a hyperosmotic environment. This study evaluated the effects of long-term hypersaline conditions (16‰) on the growth, histology and transcriptomics of the two main immune organs, the spleen and head kidney, in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus relative to those reared in freshwater for eight weeks. No differences in weight gain and specific growth rate were found between fish reared under these two salinities. Hyperosmotic stress induced a

Trematode taxonomy is mainly based on the morphological traits of adults. The identification of metacercariae is challenging because such traits are not developed in larval forms, and they even may show some level of morphological variability. Studies testing the potential correspondence between morphological differences and genetic variation of parasites are still lacking. The metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum minimum are probably the diplostomids more widely distributed in North and Middle American freshwater fish, and their intraspecific morphological variability has been attributed to the

The tapeworm Sciadocephalus megalodiscus Diesing, 1850 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), is redescribed based on newly collected specimens parasitizing tucunare peacock bass, Cichla monoculus Agassiz, 1831 (Perciformes: Cichlidae), in the Peruvian Amazon. Even though this cestode was redescribed 2 decades ago, that redescription did not report some of the unique features of this species. The most unusual characteristics of the species are (1) peculiar formation of the uterus, with fast formation of numerous, tightly packed diverticula protruding ventrally and dorsally, with simultaneous disintegrat

Osteoclasts play important roles during bone growth and in maintaining bone health and bone homeostasis. Dysfunction or lack of osteoclasts leads to increased bone mass and osteopetrosis phenotypes in mouse and human. Here we report a severe osteopetrosis-like phenotype in transgenic medaka fish, in which membrane bound EGFP (mEGFP) was expressed in osteoclasts under control of the cathepsin K promoter (ctsk:mEGFP). In contrast to reporter lines with GFP expression in the cytoplasm of osteoclasts, adult fish of the mEGFP line developed bone defects indicative for an osteoclast dysfunction. Act

Neurokinin B (NKB) was recently identified as a key regulator of reproduction in mammals and fish. Fish were found to possess a specific novel neurokinin termed NKF. To study the role of NKB/NKF in the regulation of fish reproduction and to investigate the role of NKB/NKF and their receptors in the piscine pituitary, we have identified the NKB/tachikinin 3 receptor (tac3r) system in tilapia. Bioinformatics and phylogenetic analyses have demonstrated that the tilapia holds 1 putative tac3 gene and 2 NKB receptor genes (tac3ra and tac3rb) that clustered with other piscine Tac3 and NKB receptor l

In the pursuit of sustainable aquaculture, the integration of unconventional plant-based feed additives like papaya leaf meal (PLM) offers a promising approach for enhancing fish growth while reducing feed costs and environmental impact. To evaluate the efficacy of PLM as a growth promoter, four experimental diets were formulated by gradually incorporating PLM at inclusion levels of 0%, 3%, 6% and 9%. Nile tilapia fingerlings were cultured over a 60-day period within a recirculating aquaculture system comprising 12 tanks, with three replicates assigned to each treatment group. Fish were fed tw

Edwardsiella anguillarum is an emerging aquaculture pathogen responsible for economic losses across several cultured fish species. This study reports the isolation, identification, and characterisation of four isolates recovered from two infectious outbreaks in farmed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Mexico. In 2021 and 2022, mortalities events occurred at two aquaculture facilities located in Querétaro and Estado de México, where affected fish exhibited clinical signs including skin darkening, ataxia, erratic swimming, haemorrhages at the operculum base, and scale loss. Internally, asc

Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), a member of the species Megalocytivirus pagrus1, poses a significant threat to global aquaculture and has recently emerged as a major pathogen in farmed tilapia. This study reports the identification and characterisation of an ISKNV strain, designated ISKNV-VS456, isolated from a lethal outbreak in Indonesian farmed tilapia. A Nile tilapia challenge experiment confirmed the virus's high pathogenicity, causing 100% mortality by 10 days post-infection (dpi), with the kidney identified as a key site of viral replication. Infected fish exhibited

BACKGROUND: Free fatty acids (FFAs) are the main cause of fatty liver disease, which can be alleviated by modulation of intestinal microbiota. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum plays a key role in maintaining liver health, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear.
RESULTS: Here, a strain affiliated to Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was isolated from the intestine of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). We used a gossypol-induced fatty liver disease model, which only increased the FFAs level in liver, to investigate the effectiveness of L. plantarum (YC17) in alleviating FFAs-induced lipotoxic

The investigation of the toxic potential of a newly introduced herbicide, Florpyrauxifen-benzyl (FPX), on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was the aim of this study. For 96 h, the median lethal concentration (LC50) was assessed in fish juveniles using the Probit analysis following the exposure to five concentrations of FPX (2-3 ppm). For investigating some mechanisms of FPX toxicity, fish were allocated into three groups (0, 0.27 and 0.54 ppm of FPX) and the cut-off intervals of the exposure were at 7 and 15 days. Liver malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were assess

BACKGROUND: Challenges of limited supply and increasing prices of fishmeal have driven the aquaculture nutritionists to seek alternative sustainable protein rich ingredients to keep manufacturing aquafeeds in a maintainable and cost-effective way. Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucenslarvae meal represent great potential as a sustainable alternative to fishmeal in aquafeeds.
METHODS: Three replacement diets for fishmeal were prepared at different levels of defatted black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) meal (DBSFM): Diet 1 (0 g DBSFM /kg diet, control), 33% (DBSFM-33%, 66 g DBSFM /kg diet), an

The marine environment is a rich source of bioactive compounds. Therefore, the sea cucumber was isolated from the Red Sea at the Al-Ain Al-Sokhna coast and it was identified as surf redfish (Actinopyga mauritiana). The aqueous extract of the surf redfish was utilized as an ecofriendly, novel and sustainable approach to fabricate zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). The biosynthesized ZnO-NPs were physico-chemically characterized and evaluated for their possible antibacterial and insecticidal activities. Additionally, their safety in the non-target organism model (Nile tilapia fish) was also inv
