The Haleem-Botchu classification: a novel CT-based classification for lumbar foraminal stenosis.

PURPOSE: No clinical CT-based classification system is currently in use for lumbar foraminal stenosis. MRI scanners are not easily available, are expensive and may be contraindicated in an increasing number of patients. This study aimed to propose and evaluate the reproducibility of a novel CT-based classification for lumbar foraminal stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The grading was developed as four grades: normal foramen-Grade 0, anteroposterior (AP)/superoinferior (SI) (single plane) fat compression-Grade 1, both AP/SI compression (two planes) without distortion of nerve root-Grade 2 and G

Dengue classification: current WHO vs. the newly suggested classification for better clinical application?

INTRODUCTION: There has been confusion regarding the clinical classification of dengue. The current WHO classification used since the 70s classifies dengue into dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), dengue shock syndrome (DSS). In 2009, a new classification of dengue proposed by WHO Tropical Disease Research (TDR) was published in the WHO TDR 2009 dengue guidelines. This new classification classifies dengue into dengue (D), dengue with warning signs (DW) and severe dengue (SD). OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness in clinical management between the current WHO classification a

Radiological classification of optic pathway gliomas: experience of a modified functional classification system.

Optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) in childhood are associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and since 1958 have been classified anatomically using the Dodge classification (DC). MR scanning permits a more detailed anatomical description than can be classified by this historical system. A modified Dodge classification (MDC) has been applied to MRI scans from a cohort of 72 patients (36.1% NF1-positive) from 4 centres participating in an international clinical trial. The MDC was feasible, applicable and more detailed than the original DC. NF1-positive cases more commonly involved both optic ner

Efficacy of the revised Enzian classification: a retrospective analysis. Does the revised Enzian classification solve the problem of duplicate classification in rASRM and Enzian?

PURPOSE: The most widely accepted classification for endometriosis is the Revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine (rASRM) system, but this does not take deeply infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) into account. The Enzian classification enables clinicians to classify DIE. Due to complexity and partial overlap with rASRM, it was revised for a second time in February 2011. Using both the systems to classify lesions would be inappropriate, as they refer to different locations. The aim of this study was to analyze whether the revised Enzian classification is easier to use and avoids duplica

Definition and Classification of Dystonia.

Dystonia is a movement disorder with varied clinical features and diverse etiologies. Here we present a revision of the 2013 consensus definition and classification of dystonia in light of subsequent publications and experience with its application during the last decade. A panel of movement disorder specialists with expertise in dystonia reviewed the original document and proposed some revision. There was broad consensus to retain the definition of dystonia with only minor clarifications to the wording. Dystonia is defined as a movement disorder characterized by sustained or intermittent abno

Classification of Presbyopia by Severity.

There are close to two billion individuals globally living with presbyopia. In spite of its ubiquitous and progressive nature, there is no widely accepted, formal guideline or consensus statement on the classification of presbyopia by degree of severity. A panel of leading eye care professionals representing both optometrists and ophthalmologists convened virtually to discuss and document their combined assessments from the body of literature and clinical practice expertise in this commentary. In light of emerging therapies, classifying presbyopia by mild, moderate, or advanced severity may he

Classification and staging of thymoma.

The appropriate therapy and prognosis of patients with thymic malignancies is decisively influenced by the local extent and dissemination of the tumor. For this reason, a staging system that reflects these factors is essential. Mainly the Masaoka-Koga classification, which was introduced in 1994, has been applied for this purpose. The rarity of thymic malignancies makes it difficult not only to establish internationally standardized diagnostics and treatment, but also to progress staging. Besides, efforts were made to adapt the classification into a tumor-node-metastasis-based (TNM) system for

[Classification and treatment of itch].

Chronic itch occurs frequently and is a highly distressing symptom, which is associated with a large variety of cutaneous, neuropathic and systemic conditions. The recent advancements in our understanding of itch transmission enables a coherent approach to antipruritic treatment in various common diseases, but accurate diagnosis remains vital. Based on the International Forum for the Study of Itch 2007 classification system this review summarises the first rational clinically based approach to categorising chronic itch conditions. Furthermore, the antipruritic treatment options available for e

Chronic gastritis classifications.

Chronic gastritis are inflammatory diseases of the gastric mucosa whose diagnosis depends on  pathological examination. They are frequent and cover a significant part of the daily activity of pathologists. Their origin is often infectious, particularly by Helicobacter Pylori. Several classifications of chronic gastritis were proposed but in order to achieve standardization in the drafting of pathological reports of gastric biopsies, pathologists currently following the recommendations of the revisted Sydney System. [Classification and etiology of hyperthyroidism].

The prevalence of hyperthyroidism in women is between 0.5-2% and it is 10 times less common in men. The most common causes are Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, and autonomously functioning thyroid adenoma. Rare causes of hyperthyroidisms are as follow: pituitary adenoma, autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashitoxicosis), levothyroxine overdose, inadequate iodine supplementation (including amiodaron induced hyperthyroidism, iodine-based contrast media), hCG excess (pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease, germ-cell tumors), drug induced hyperthyroidism, differentiated thyroid carcinomas a

Milia: a review and classification.

Milia are frequently encountered as a primary or secondary patient concern in pediatric and adult clinics, and in general or surgical dermatology practice. Nevertheless, there are few studies on the origin of milia and, to our knowledge, there is no previous comprehensive review of the subject. We review the various forms of milia, highlighting rare variants including genodermatosis-associated milia, and present an updated classification.

[Definition and classification of GERD].

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease(GERD) is a condition which develops when the reflux of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms and/or complications. Traditionally, it was defined as a condition in which either or both of reflux esophagitis and reflux symptoms can be identified. The Montreal definition expanded the category of GERD to complications of esophagitis and extra-esophageal symptoms with or without established evidence on the correlation with GERD. Symptomatic patients those who lacks the evidence of mucosal breaks are called as NERD. Functional heartburn, defined in Rome III, i

Movement disorders: classifications.

Movement disorders (ataxia, dystonic disorders, gait disorders, Huntington disease, myoclonus, parkinsonism, spasticity, tardive dyskinesia, tics and tremor) are clinically, pathologically and genetically heterogeneous and are characterized by impairment of the planning, control or execution of movement. Current classifications of these disorders have inherent shortcomings due to the complex nature of movement disorders and the lack of diagnostic tests for the majority. Undiscriminating terminology, as well as the clinical, pathological and genetic heterogeneity, further complicate the develop
