Electrocardiogram abnormalities in residents in cold homes: a cross-sectional analysis of the nationwide Smart Wellness Housing survey in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Excess winter mortality caused by cardiovascular disease is particularly profound in cold houses. Consistent with this, accumulating evidence indicates that low indoor temperatures at home increase blood pressure. However, it remains unclear whether low indoor temperatures affect other cardiovascular biomarkers. In its latest list of priority medical devices for management of cardiovascular diseases, the World Health Organization (WHO) included electrocardiography systems as capital medical devices. We therefore examined the association between indoor temperature and electrocardiog

Environmental temperature variation influences fitness trade-offs and tolerance in a fish-tapeworm association.

BACKGROUND: Increasing temperatures are predicted to strongly impact host-parasite interactions, but empirical tests are rare. Host species that are naturally exposed to a broad temperature spectrum offer the possibility to investigate the effects of elevated temperatures on hosts and parasites. Using three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., and tapeworms, Schistocephalus solidus (Müller, 1776), originating from a cold and a warm water site of a volcanic lake, we subjected sympatric and allopatric host-parasite combinations to cold and warm conditions in a fully crossed design. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia. 3. Cold antibody type.

In cold autoimmune hemolytic anemia, the causative autoantibodies (cold agglutinins) are most reactive at low temperatures. The anti-I type of cold agglutinin is found in cold hemagglutination disease and in hemolytic anemia secondary to malignant lymphoma, leukemia, or atypical pneumonia. The anti-I type of cold agglutinin is found in many patients with infectious mononucleosis and in an occasional patient with other lymphoproliferative disorders. Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, a disorder in which exposure to cold temperatures triggers massive hemolysis, is characterized by a unique biphasic

A preliminary study of the thermal strain experienced by dive support boat personnel.

Anecdotal evidence indicated some British military dive support boat personnel suffer from uncomfortably cold hands and feet, which could impair their performance and be associated with reductions in core body temperature. This study collected preliminary data on thermal stress and cognitive performance of personnel taking part in a cold-weather training exercise. Six men were monitored during four boat transits in a range of climatic conditions (air temperature +1.2°C to -10.5°C, wind chill -4.5°C to 19.3°C). Core body temperature was measured with a radio pill and 12 skin sites (ISO 9886 plu

The effects of temperature on the defensive strikes of rattlesnakes.

Movements of ectotherms are constrained by their body temperature owing to the effects of temperature on muscle physiology. As physical performance often affects the outcome of predator-prey interactions, environmental temperature can influence the ability of ectotherms to capture prey and/or defend themselves against predators. However, previous research on the kinematics of ectotherms suggests that some species may use elastic storage mechanisms when attacking or defending, thereby mitigating the effects of sub-optimal temperature. Rattlesnakes (Crotalus spp.) are a speciose group of ectothe

Biocrude extraction from human-excreta-derived hydrochar for sustainable energy and agricultural applications.

Hydrothermal carbonization may be a sustainable sanitary treatment for wet organic waste including human excreta. Human-excreta-derived hydrochar properties differ from those of typical wet biomass due to the formation of a biocrude-like phase at low reaction temperatures. This study characterized the importance of this phase in terms of hydrochar combustion properties and potential agricultural use. Hydrothermal carbonization of raw human excreta was undertaken at 180, 210, and 240 °C, after which the biocrude phase was extracted with dichloromethane. Physicochemical properties, surface-area

Constant temperature and fluctuating temperature have distinct effects on hypoxia tolerance in killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus).

Climate change is leading to rapid change in aquatic environments, increasing the mean and variability of temperatures, and increasing the incidence of hypoxia. We investigated how acclimation to constant temperatures or to diel temperature fluctuations affects hypoxia tolerance in mummichog killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus). Killifish were acclimated to constant cool (15°C), constant warm (25°C) or a diel temperature cycle (15°C at night, 25°C during day) for 6 weeks. We then measured hypoxia tolerance (time to loss of equilibrium in severe hypoxia, tLOE; critical O2 tension, Pcrit), whole-an

Excellent activity and selectivity of Pd/ZSM-5 catalyst in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by H2.

Superior de-NOx activity and N2 selectivity of the Pd/ZSM-5 catalyst was observed at low temperature (<200 °C) for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by H2 (H2-SCR). Various Pd/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by calcinating at different temperatures (e.g., 500 °C, 650 °C, 750 °C, and 850 °C) and treated at reductive conditions before the H2-SCR reaction was performed. Among the prepared catalysts, the one prepared at the calcination temperature at 750 °C resulted in 96.7% NOx conversion and 96.8% N2 selectivity at 150 °C. Based on the H2-O2 reaction, the higher activity of the Pd/ZSM-5 cat

The influence of heat and cold waves on mortality in Russian subarctic cities with varying climates.

Publications on ambient temperature-related mortality among Arctic or subarctic populations are extremely rare. While circumpolar areas cover large portions of several European countries, Canada, and the USA, the population of these territories is relatively small, and the data needed for statistical analysis of the health impacts of extreme temperature events are frequently insufficient. This study utilizes standard time series regression techniques to estimate relative increases in cause- and age-specific daily mortality rates during heat waves and cold spells in four Russian cities with a s

Exposure to low temperature prepares the turtle brain to withstand anoxic environments during overwintering.

In most vertebrates, anoxia drastically reduces the production of the essential adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to power its many necessary functions, and, consequently, cell death occurs within minutes. However, some vertebrates, such as the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta bellii), have evolved the ability to survive months without oxygen by simultaneously decreasing ATP supply and demand, surviving the anoxic period without any apparent cellular damage. The impact of anoxia on the metabolic function of painted turtles has received a lot of attention. However, the impact of low temperature has r

Snow cover and late fall movement influence wood frog survival during an unusually cold winter.

Understanding how organisms will respond to altered winter conditions is hampered by a paucity of information on the winter ecology for many species. Amphibians are sensitive to environmental temperature and moisture conditions and may be vulnerable to changes in winter climate. We used a combination of radio telemetry and field enclosures to monitor survival of the freeze-tolerant wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) during the unusually cold winter of 2013-2014. We experimentally manipulated snow cover to determine the effect of snow removal on winter survival. In addition, we placed a group of

Pre-cooling for endurance exercise performance in the heat: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Endurance exercise capacity diminishes under hot environmental conditions. Time to exhaustion can be increased by lowering body temperature prior to exercise (pre-cooling). This systematic literature review synthesizes the current findings of the effects of pre-cooling on endurance exercise performance, providing guidance for clinical practice and further research. METHODS: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus databases were searched in May 2012 for studies evaluating the effectiveness of pre-cooling to enhance endurance exercise performance in hot environme

Effect of water and temperature stress on the content of active constituents of Hypericum brasiliense Choisy.

Hypericum brasiliense is a medicinal herb containing several compounds with important pharmacological activity. In this study, we investigated the effects of water stress (waterlogging and drought) and temperature (low and high, constant and alternate) on the content of betulinic acid and phenolic compounds (quercetin, rutin, 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone, isouliginosin B) in this species. In general, the water stress increased the levels of all of the compounds analyzed, particularly some of the phenolic compounds. On the other hand, the responses to alternating temperatures varied according to the c

Expeditionary Immersion Circulating Heating Device: A Promising Technique for Treating Frostbite Injuries and Warming Intravenous Fluids in a Forward Deployed Cold Weather Environment.

INTRODUCTION: Cold weather injuries require prompt warm water immersion therapy, which proves to be a difficult task in the cold austere environment. Current guidelines recommend 104 °F water immersion, but producing and maintaining large volumes of warm water is challenging in sub-freezing temperatures. We describe a novel process of utilizing a sous vide immersion circulator to maintain warm fluids for immersion therapy and efficient fluid rewarming in a cold forward-deployed setting for the treatment of cold weather injuries in an effort to bridge the gap between current medical guidelines

Thermoregulatory and cognitive responses to ambient temperature under resting and exercise conditions.

Ambient temperature is associated with human thermoregulation and may relate to cognitive performance, but the effects of mild cold and moderate heat, which are more representative of daily environments, remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the thermoregulatory, perceptual, and cognitive responses during passive rest and moderate-intensity exercise. Forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to cold (10°C), moderate (22°C), or hot (32°C) conditions and completed separate resting and exercise sessions at their assigned temperature. Core temperature (Tcore), mean skin tempe

Weather extremes and perinatal mortality - Seasonal and ethnic differences in northern Sweden, 1800-1895.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown the impact of heat and cold on total and age-specific mortality, but knowledge gaps remain regarding weather vulnerability of very young infants. This study assessed the association of temperature extremes with perinatal mortality (stillbirths and deaths in the first week of life), among two ethnic groups in pre-industrial northern Sweden. METHODS: We used population data of indigenous Sami and non-Sami in selected parishes of northern Sweden, 1800-1895, and monthly temperature data. Multiple logistic regression models were conducted to estimate the associa

Cold exposure increases aortic dissection risk through extracellular cold inducible RNA binding protein and toll like receptor 4 signaling.

Several observational studies have indicated a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases in cold weather. Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is highly conserved and upregulated in response to various cellular stressors. Although CIRP provides protective effects against cold exposure, extracellular CIRP (eCIRP) is a danger-associated molecular pattern that can trigger inflammatory response. We aimed to explore the association between cold temperature and AD development, decipher the mechanistic links between cold stress and vascular cell injury, and provide a new therapeutic approach for c

Prostaglandin signals from adult germ stem cells delay somatic aging of Caenorhabditis elegans.

A moderate reduction of body temperature can induce a remarkable lifespan extension. Here we examine the link between cold temperature, germ line fitness and organismal longevity. We show that low temperature reduces age-associated exhaustion of germ stem cells (GSCs) in Caenorhabditis elegans, a process modulated by thermosensory neurons. Notably, robust self-renewal of adult GSCs delays reproductive aging and is required for extended lifespan at cold temperatures. These cells release prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) to induce cbs-1 expression in the intestine, increasing somatic production of hydroge
