Antibiotic resistance of enterococci isolated from frozen foods and environmental water.

We evaluated 239 isolates of enterococci (113 from frozen foods and 126 from environmental water) for their resistance to 8 antibiotics by agar disk diffusion method. Most isolates from both sources were resistant to tetracycline (64.1% food strains; 46.8% water strains) and ciprofloxacin (53.4% food strains; 48.4% water strains). A relatively high prevalence of chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and vancomycin resistance was present, ranging from 9.7 to 27.2% for food strains and 10.3 to 15.9% for water strains; while other drug resistance (ampicillin, gentamicin and teicoplanin)

Presence and mechanism of antimicrobial resistance among enterococci from cats and dogs.

The presence and mechanism of acquired resistance to erythromycin, tylosin, lincomycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, and vancomycin were determined in 97 and 104 enterococci isolated from rectal swabs of cats and dogs, respectively. Eleven feline and three canine enterococcal isolates contained the aac(6')-Ie-aph(2'')-Ia gene encoding high-level resistance to gentamicin, an antibiotic often used for treating enterococcal infections in humans. The combination of erm(B) and vat(E) genes encoding resistance to streptogramins was detected in one

Agar dilution method for susceptibility testing of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The antibiotic susceptibilities of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates obtained from patients attending a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases in Tucumán, Argentina, were determined by the agar dilution method (MIC). 3.5% of the isolates produced beta-lactamase. A total of 96.5% of beta-lactamase negative isolates tested were susceptible to penicillin (MIC < or = 2 micrograms/ml-1); 14.03% of the tested isolates were resistant to tetracycline (MIC < or = 2 micrograms/ml-1), and 98% of the tested isolates were susceptible to spectinomycin (MIC < or = 64 micrograms/ml-1). The MICs for 95% of the

Campylobacter survival potentially influenced by key microbial species within the microbiota on free-range broiler carcasses during refrigerated storage.

Campylobacter is the leading cause of foodborne gastroenteritis in Europe, with poultry as its primary reservoir. Although Campylobacter responses to abiotic stress are well documented, these mechanisms alone do not fully explain its persistence on broiler meat, suggesting a role for the surrounding meat microbiota. This study investigated whether Campylobacter survival during refrigerated storage of broiler meat was associated with specific microbial community structures. Using combined culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches, microbiota composition and Campylobacter levels were

In vitro synergy of isavuconazole in combination with colistin against Candida auris.

The in vitro interactions of isavuconazole with colistin were evaluated against 15 clinical Candida auris isolates by a microdilution checkerboard technique based on the EUCAST reference method for antifungal susceptibility testing and by agar diffusion using isavuconazole gradient concentration strips with or without colistin incorporated RPMI agar. Interpretation of the checkerboard results was done by the fractional inhibitory concentration index and by response surface analysis based on the Bliss model. By checkerboard, combination was synergistic for 93% of the isolates when interpretatio

Assessment and molecular characterization of Bacillus cereus isolated from edible fungi in China.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus is a foodborne pathogen commonly found in nature and food and can cause food spoilage and health issues. Although the prevalence of B. cereus in foods has been reported worldwide, the extent of contamination in edible fungi, which has become increasingly popular as traditional or functional food, is largely unknown. Here we investigated the prevalence, toxin genes' distribution, antibiotic resistance, and genetic diversity of B. cereus isolated from edible fungi in China. RESULTS: Six hundred and ninety-nine edible fungi samples were collected across China, with 19

Listeria cross contamination levels in raw ice cream mix can serve as a predictor of their potential presence as heat-injured cells.

Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection caused by foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Some of the major ice cream recalls in recent years reaffirm the ability of this food-borne pathogen to survive in diverse dairy processing environments and cause cross contamination. Inspection reports revealed certain lapses in implementing adequate hygienic practices for Listeria persistence in the processing environment, leading to cross contamination of ice cream. The higher levels of cross contamination of raw ice cream mix might result in random heat-injured cells when exposed to minimu

The antifungal activity of human parotid secretion is species-specific.

Candida albicans is the major fungal colonizer of the oral cavity and causes oral candidiasis in immunocompromised patient populations. While antifungal proteins in saliva have been identified and the virulence factors of C. albicans have been well studied, little is known about the role saliva plays in the preferential colonization of the oral cavity by C. albicans. We report that the fungistatic activity of human parotid secretion toward six C. albicans strains is considerably lower than towards nine non-C. albicans fungal species (average IC₅₀ values >1000 mg/l and <70 mg/l, respectively).

Activity of novel oxazolidinones against Nocardia brasiliensis growing within THP-1 macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Nocardia are organisms that can escape the effects of both immune response and antimicrobial agents, due to their potential capacity to grow intracellularly. In previous studies, we found that experimental oxazolidinones, DA-7157 and DA-7218, are active both in vitro and in vivo. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we compare the ability of linezolid, DA-7157 and DA-7218 to inhibit intracellular growth of Nocardia brasiliensis within the human monocyte cell line THP-1. METHODS AND RESULTS: The addition of oxazolidinones to the infected macrophage monolayer at concentrations 0.25x, 1x, 4x

Resistance of Legionella pneumophila serotype 1 biofilms to chlorine-based disinfection.

The presence of Legionella spp. in potable water systems is a major concern to municipal water providers and consumers alike. Despite the inclusion of chlorine in potable supplies and frequent chlorination cycles, the bacterium is a recalcitrant human pathogen capable of causing incidents of Legionnaires' disease, Pontiac fever and community-acquired pneumonia in humans. Using two materials routinely employed for the delivery of potable water as a substratum, copper and stainless steel, the development of Legionella pneumophila biofilms and their response to chlorination was monitored over a t

[Influence of penicillin minimum inhibitory concentration in the synergy between penicillin and gentamicin in viridans-group streptococci].

Penicillin resistance rates higher than 60% have been recorded in viridans group streptococci by some authors during the 90's and recently such resistance was associated with higher levels of mortality in bacteremia. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration of penicillin for which synergy with aminoglycosides is not yet possible is still unknown. In order to try to dilucidate this puzzle, a study on the susceptibility to penicillin of 28 strains of viridans group streptococci isolated from significant samples in the Hospital de Pediatría "Prof. Dr. Juan P. Garrahan" was carried out. Seven m

Effects of growth-promoting antimicrobials on inhibition of Yersinia enterocolitica O:3 by porcine ileal microflora.

The survival of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O:3 was examined in an in vitro model of the porcine ileum in the presence of normal ileal microflora using a medium supplemented with the growth-promoting antimicrobials avoparcin, spiramycin, tylosin, carbadox and olaquindox, or without any antimicrobials, at 39 degrees C for 5 d. Growth of Y. enterocolitica was inhibited in all trials in the following order: avoparcin < carbadox < spiramycin < no feed additives < tylosin < olaquindox. The media supplemented with avoparcin, carbadox and spiramycin supported the survival of Y. enterocolitica up

Rationale for the choice of antibiotics for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

AIM: To review data on the efficacy of antibiotics currently available for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. RESULTS: The main problem with current therapy is the resistance of H. pylori to the compounds used, with the exception of amoxycillin and tetracyclines. Primary resistance to metronidazole reaches 80-90% in tropical countries and may reach 50% in some European countries. Primary resistance to macrolides does occur but at a much lower level, although apparently linked to the level of consumption of these drugs in a given country. Resistance may also be acquired during monotherapy

Killing rates for caspofungin against Candida albicans after brief and continuous caspofungin exposure in the presence and absence of serum.

It was previously demonstrated that brief (≤1 h) exposures to echinocandins are as effective to kill Candida albicans cells as continuous 24-h exposure. However, killing rates after continuous and short (1 h) echinocandin exposures to C. albicans have not yet been evaluated in RPMI-1640 with and without 50 % serum. We evaluated four echinocandin susceptible C. albicans bloodstream isolates, ATCC 10231 type strain and an echinocandin-resistant isolate (DPL20, FKS F645P). Caspofungin MICs, time-kill and postantifungal effect (PAFE) tests were performed in RPMI-1640 with and without 50 % serum. K

In vitro activity of an aqueous allicin extract and a novel allicin topical gel formulation against Lancefield group B streptococci.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown the efficacy of intra-partum antibiotics in preventing early-onset group B streptococcal sepsis. This approach results in a high intra-partum antibiotic use. Worryingly, the same antibiotics used in prophylaxis are also first-line treatment for neonatal sepsis, and antibiotic exposure in the peri-natal period has been shown to be a risk factor for late-onset serious bacterial infections and allergic disease. Antibiotic exposure in the peri-natal period is becoming a major public health issue; alternative strategies are needed. Garlic has been traditionally used t
