Implant placement post extraction in esthetic single tooth sites: when immediate, when early, when late?

Implant placement in post-extraction sites of single teeth in the esthetic zone has been a topic of great interest in the field of implant dentistry since 1990. Triggered by the development of guided bone regeneration, the concept of immediate implant placement became quite popular in the 1990s. In the past 12 years, however, the dental community has begun to focus increasingly on the esthetic outcomes of post-extraction implant placement and several studies indicated a significant risk for the development of mucosal recessions with immediate implants. Parallel with this, significant progress

Sweet interference: oral fermentation volatile confounders in exhaled breath revealed by minimal glucose exposure.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath have been explored as non-invasive biomarkers for disease, including respiratory infections and cancer, yet very few breath tests have reached clinical validation and regulatory approval. A major barrier is the difficulty of identifying and controlling confounding factors that affect volatile exhaled breath composition. A critical and overlooked confounder is the oral microbiome, which produces VOCs that can obscure the trace volatiles originating from the lower airways. To investigate this, we conducted an intervention study on sixteen healthy

A national cross-sectional study of dentists' vaccine hesitancy and intention to provide HPV vaccines following emergency COVID-19 vaccination authorization.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal cancers are the most common human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers in the United States, yet are largely preventable with timely administration of the HPV vaccine. While the two-dose vaccine is currently underutilized, one strategy to meet the 2030 HPV vaccination goal is to expand dentists' scope of practice to include vaccination. This study was conducted to report dentists' willingness to administer the HPV vaccine to their patients if allowed by state legislation, and to what extent vaccine hesitancy affected their decision. METHODS: A representative sample o

Alternatives to β-Lactams as Agents for the Management of Dentoalveolar Abscess.

Dentoalveolar abscess are localized infections within the tooth or the surrounding alveolar bone, often resulting from untreated dental caries or dental trauma causing alveolar bone resorption or even loss. Serious consequences arising from the spread of a dental abscess can often lead to significant morbidity and mortality. The acute dentoalveolar abscess is a polymicrobial infection comprising strict anaerobes, such as anaerobic cocci i.e., Prevotella fusobacterium species, and facultative anaerobes i.e., Streptococci viridians and Streptococcus anginosus. Moreover, inappropriately managed d

The oral-gut-brain axis in periodontitis: microbial signaling in systemic and neuroinflammatory disease.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the oral cavity, has been identified as a modifiable risk factor of the development of systemic and neurological disorders via a complicated interplay of microbiological, immunological, and neural interactions. Periodontal pathogens breach local immune homeostasis, are translocated to the gut and brain, and trigger a cascade of immune deregulation, leaky gut, and blood-brain barrier, thereby forming a tri-directional communication network that links local oral inflammation to systemic and neurovascular conditions. This review synthesizes existin

A review on the potential use of bismuth nanoparticles in oral health.

According to many investigations, persistent oral infections may be caused by oral pathogenic biofilms. Irritation of soft tissues and subsequent bone resorption due to bacterial biofilm contamination of the implant further worsen oral health. Dental problems may be effectively treated using metal nanoparticles (NPs) because they limit the development of many different types of bacteria. With their low toxicity, X-ray sensitivity, high atomic number, near-infrared driven semiconductor qualities, and cheap cost, multifunctional bismuth (Bi) NPs with therapeutic activities show significant poten
