Code Social: Integrating SDoH into Emergency Resident Education.

AUDIENCE: This small group curriculum is geared toward medical students and residents of all levels of training in emergency medicine programs. INTRODUCTION: Emergency departments serve as critical first points of contact for patients with acute health needs, often exacerbated by social determinants of health (SDoH). Incorporating SDoH awareness into emergency medicine practice is essential for addressing immediate health concerns, preventing future crises, and reducing the burden on healthcare systems. By identifying and addressing social factors, emergency providers can break cycles of recu

Abuse of power in relationships and sexual health.

STI rates are high for First Nations in Canada and the United States. Our objective was to understand the context, issues, and beliefs around high STI rates from a nêhiyaw (Cree) perspective. Twenty-two in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 community participants between March 1, 2011 and May 15, 2011. Interviews were conducted by community researchers and grounded in the Cree values of relationship, sharing, personal agency and relational accountability. A diverse purposive snowball sample of community members were asked why they thought STI rates were high for the community. The remaind

Ayurveda and Preventive Public Health in India: A Policy Perspective for Primary Health Care.

Community medicine emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention at the population level. In India, the growing burden of lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) highlights the need for effective preventive and promotive strategies. Traditional systems that prioritize lifestyle regulation and early risk modification are therefore of increasing relevance. To discuss the preventive role of Ayurveda in the context of rising non-communicable diseases and to highlight its potential relevance for primary health care and community medicine. This viewpoint draws upon selected evidence

The Status of Neuroimaging with SPECT and PET in Germany: Results from the 1st Survey on Nuclear Neuroimaging in Germany in 2023.

The advent of disease-modifying therapies for neurodegenerative diseases may result in a growing demand for nuclear neuroimaging procedures presenting opportunities but also challenges to the nuclear medicine community. Whether capacity and expertise in Germany are sufficient to meet an increasing demand for nuclear neuroimaging is under discussion. Against this background, the Neuroimaging Working Group of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine initiated the first survey on the status of nuclear neuroimaging in Germany in 2023. 82 institutions participated in the survey: 33 practices, 15 comm

Reasons for Optimism About Academic Medicine's Actions Against Climate Change.

Since the first mention of climate change in Academic Medicine in 2009, the pace of the climate crisis has accelerated, its impacts on every facet of planetary health have grown more severe, and the urgency for humans to act has become more dire. Medical schools, teaching hospitals and health systems, universities, affiliated organizations, and the millions of people who traverse the halls of these institutions as leaders, physicians, scientists, educators, learners, patients and families, and community members have an obligation to respond. In this commentary, the authors describe 3 reasons t

[New ways in interdisciplinarity: internal medicine meets human genetics : When frequent conditions become rare and rare conditions become frequent].

Molecular findings have led to a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of numerous diseases and now form the basis for targeted treatment. An example of this is chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The identification of the BCR::ABL1 translocation enabled the development of specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors. While the median survival time used to be 4 years, CML is now often a chronic disease with a near-normal life expectancy thanks to targeted treatment; however, most tumor diseases are more complex at the molecular level. Advances in genome analysis enable increasingly more refined molec

Nothing about Us without Us in Precision Medicine: A Call to Reframe Disability Difference in Genetics and Genomics.

Sixty-one million Americans and approximately a billion people worldwide live with some form of disability that limits one or more major life activities. The field of precision medicine continues to grapple with how to best serve disability communities. In this paper, we suggest that precision medicine faces an ethical tension between its goal to treat or cure disabling conditions and views that consider disability as a marginalized identity. We appeal to the concepts of recognition justice and distributive justice to argue that the ELSI community should take a more proactive role in promoting

Exploring the Role of Community Pharmacy in the Management of Osteoarthritis: Surveys and Interviews With People With Osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of joint pain, and people often self-manage their symptoms before seeking support. Community pharmacies are accessible and well placed to support people with OA using pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches. Current policy recommends that pharmacies should be integrated into long-term condition management pathways. This study aimed to explore the experiences of people with OA engaging with community pharmacy staff for their joint problems and their views about an extended community pharmacy role for OA. METHODS: A multimethod study g

Upon entering an age of global ivermectin-based integrated mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases and malaria.

Ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) in humans to reduce malaria vectors is yet another use for this remarkable medicine whose discoverers shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine with the discoverer of artemisinin. The malaria community should join those who have long used ivermectin MDA in an integrated battle to break transmission of three vector-borne parasitic diseases.

Embedding research education and scholarly project development into a medical education curriculum: a transferable glocalized curriculum model.

Early experiential learning, including participation in research and community-engaged health promotion, fosters critical thinking, scholarly development, and socially responsive practice; however, these opportunities remain inconsistently integrated into pre-clinical curricula. Dense foundational science content, limited faculty mentorship capacity, and reliance on optional engagement contribute to inequitable access, with participation often limited to higher-achieving students. These gaps challenge compliance with accreditation expectations that require medical schools to provide students w

Does access to medicines differ from access to healthcare? Experiences of barriers to medicines access by people facing social disadvantage.

BACKGROUND: Levesque et al.'s widely-cited five dimensional model of access to healthcare has been used in a variety of contexts, including access to medicines. However the model is based on healthcare, i.e., facilities where health professionals work. We examined whether there were other important features of access to medicines, not captured by this model. METHODS: A longitudinal qualitative study was conducted, repeatedly interviewing 21 households about their lives and access to medicines, over the course of a year. Participants were Māori, Pacific, former refugee, or New Zealand European

The paradigm and future value of the metaverse for the intervention of cognitive decline.

Cognitive decline is a gradual neurodegenerative process that is affected by genetic and environmental factors. The doctor-patient relationship in the healthcare for cognitive decline is in a "shallow" medical world. With the development of data science, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and digital twin, the introduction of the concept of the metaverse in medicine has brought alternative and complementary strategies in the intervention of cognitive decline. This article technically analyzes the application scenarios and paradigms of the metaverse in medicine in the field of mental hea

Using social media listening to understand barriers to genomic medicine for those living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Technological improvements alone have not led to the integration of genomic medicine across a broad range of diseases and populations. For genomic medicine to be successfully implemented across specialties and conditions, the challenges patients and caregivers experience need to be identified using a multi-faceted understanding of the context in which these obstacles occur and how they are experienced. Individuals affected by rare conditions, like Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), express numerous challenges with accessing genomic medicine.
