Contextual protective factors for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs): potential avenues for intervention.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are both prevalent and harmful throughout the lifespan. More recently, researchers have begun to explore the potential mitigating or moderating effects of protective factors, mainly by examining Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs). However, the protective factors explored have largely focused on positive experiences in childhood or aspects of the individual or their family that might buffer ACEs, ignoring the larger contextual settings in which individuals develop over time. This study examined if contextual protective factors such as sense of community

Gambling revenues as a public administration issue: electronic gaming machines in Victoria.

Gambling activities and the revenues derived have been seen as a way to increase economic development in deprived areas. There are also, however, concerns about the effects of gambling in general and electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in particular, on the resources available to the localities in which they are situated. This paper focuses on the factors that determine the extent and spending of community benefit-related EGM-generated resources within Victoria, Australia, focusing in particular on the relationships between EGM activity and socio-economic and social capital indicators, and how t

Work engagement among polish nurses: the mediating effects of personal resources and job crafting.

BACKGROUND: The global shortage of nurses and their decrease in workplace-related wellbeing is a major public health challenge. It was intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic and is further driven by high job demands, lacking resources and reduced work engagement. Understanding organizational and individual factors that support nurses' engagement is therefore crucial. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine how job resources - perceived organizational support and community support at work-relate to work engagement among nurses, and whether particular personal resources (self-efficacy and ego-resil

Integrating science-based and local ecological knowledge: a case study of mangrove restoration and rehabilitation projects in the Philippines.

Mangrove forest is an ecosystem-based solution for disaster risk reduction in the Philippines, but its historical deforestation has hampered its capacity to protect coastal communities. With the increasing occurrence of storm surge in the Philippines, mangrove reforestation projects have received renewed attention, but many have failed. Community participation was deemed to be essential in those projects that did well. Hence, this paper examines successful mangrove restoration and rehabilitation projects in the Philippines to find out how community participation contributed to the accomplishme

Revisiting the relationship between natural resources and environmental quality- can ICT break the "resource curse" in the environment?

Despite the prevalence of discussions on the "resource curse", the impact of natural resources on environmental quality for better or for worse has not been clearly answered, this study aims to answer the question by introducing the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). To that end, by using the Instrumental Variable Generalized Method of Moments (IV GMM) estimator and a sample of 102 developing and emerging economies from 2006 to 2016, this paper studies the impact of ICT on the relationship between natural resources and environmental quality. Specially, the Environmental

The challenges of incorporating cultural ecosystem services into environmental assessment.

The ecosystem services concept is used to make explicit the diverse benefits ecosystems provide to people, with the goal of improving assessment and, ultimately, decision-making. Alongside material benefits such as natural resources (e.g., clean water, timber), this concept includes-through the 'cultural' category of ecosystem services-diverse non-material benefits that people obtain through interactions with ecosystems (e.g., spiritual inspiration, cultural identity, recreation). Despite the longstanding focus of ecosystem services research on measurement, most cultural ecosystem services hav

Universal Reach at Birth: Family Connects.

How do we screen all families in a population at a single time point, identify family-specific risks, and connect each family with evidence-based community resources that can help them overcome those risks-an approach known as targeted universalism? In this article, Kenneth A. Dodge and W. Benjamin Goodman describe Family Connects, a program designed to do exactly that. Developed and tested in Durham, NC, Family Connects-now in place at 16 sites in the United States-aims to reach every family giving birth in a given community. The program rests on three pillars. The first is home visiting: tra

The moderating impact of personal and collective resilience resources on postpartum depression in conflict-affected environments.

BACKGROUND: Women exposed to conflict are at greater risk of experiencing adverse mental health impacts, and women in the postpartum period may face additional distress and heightened risk. Resilience resources, known to mitigate the impacts of stressful events, could offer protection to these new mothers. The current study aimed to assess whether conflict exposure was associated with greater postpartum depression symptoms, and whether three distinct resilience resources - personal resilience, community resilience, and social support - would moderate this association among women highly exposed

Identifying community healthcare supports for the elderly and the factors affecting their aging care model preference: evidence from three districts of Beijing.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese tradition of filial piety, which prioritized family-based care for the elderly, is transitioning and elders can no longer necessarily rely on their children. The purpose of this study was to identify community support for the elderly, and analyze the factors that affect which model of old-age care elderly people dwelling in communities prefer. METHODS: We used the database "Health and Social Support of Elderly Population in Community". Questionnaires were issued in 2013, covering 3 districts in Beijing. A group of 1036 people over 60 years in age were included in the s

Transitioning into the Community: Perceptions of Barriers and Facilitators Experienced By Formerly Incarcerated, Homeless Women During Reentry-A Qualitative Study.

Formerly incarcerated, homeless women on parole or probation experience individual-and structural-level barriers and facilitators as they prepare to transition into the community during reentry. A qualitative study was undertaken using focus group methods with formerly incarcerated, currently homeless women (N = 18, Mage = 37.67, SD 10.68, 23-53 years of age) exiting jail or prison. Major themes which emerged included the following: (1) access to resources-barriers and facilitators during community transition, (2) familial reconciliation and parenting during community transition, and (3) traum

Development of the 'Attentive Visitors' workshop supporting community volunteers in their palliative care signposting role.

BACKGROUND: Community volunteers in palliative care often notice needs that healthcare professionals and family caregivers miss, playing an important signposting role in several settings. However, community volunteers often still go unnoticed, are frequently insufficiently supported and their important contributions underutilized. In order to fulfill a signposting role, community volunteers need knowledge about palliative care needs and community resources; and they should have good relational, communication and observation skills. Training modules specifically aimed at these skills and knowle

Remedying Airbnb COVID-19 disruption through tourism clusters and community resilience.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation markets have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little attention is paid to how to remedy the disruption in terms of P2P accommodation performance. This study empirically investigates the spatially heterogeneous COVID-19 disruptions in the Airbnb business and offers place-based remedying strategies through local resources, including tourism clusters and community resilience. Using real data on Airbnb operating performance and local resources in Florida, we employ spatial econometric models and visualization techniques to estimate the pandemic-dis

Factors that can impact community pharmacists' role in reducing health disparities.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) significantly impact health outcomes but are often overlooked in community health care settings. Community pharmacists, as highly accessible providers, are well positioned to address these social factors and reduce health disparities. However, limited research has examined their preparedness, resource access, or current engagement in SDoH interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed New York State community pharmacists' knowledge, access to, and use of SDoH-related resources using the theoretical framework proposed by Kiles et al., which exami

People as frontliners in the management of disasters and public health emergencies.

Managing healthcare effectively during disasters and public health emergencies (DPHEs) is often challenging due to inadequate surge capacity across four key areas: Staff, stuff, space, and system. Expanding this capacity is vital when healthcare facilities are threatened or infrastructure fails. A promising approach involves utilizing community resources and latent individual capabilities, especially in resource-limited settings where community participation is critical. In this study, we utilized a scoping review methodology to investigate strategies for mobilizing individual capabilities wit
