Understanding Age Verification Practices: A Qualitative Study to Inform Community-Level Interventions.

Underage alcohol use remains a significant public health problem in the United States. Access to alcohol is a key driver of underage drinking, and youth often obtain alcohol by using false identification (fake IDs). While enforcement of minimum drinking age laws is an evidence-based strategy to reduce underage drinking, little systematic examination of age verification practices exists. To address this need, we conducted key informant interviews (N = 8) with staff and owners of alcohol retailers as well as law enforcement officers in a Southeastern U.S. college town between October 2023 and Ap

Medical Aid in Dying: Bridging Ethical Guidance and Bedside Communication in Nursing Practice.

Medical aid in dying (MAiD) has become an increasingly visible component of end-of-life care in the United States as legal access expands across multiple jurisdictions. As MAiD becomes more integrated into serious illness care, nurses, particularly those in hospice and palliative care, are increasingly the first clinicians to receive patient questions about this option. These inquiries are often embedded in broader concerns related to suffering, loss of autonomy, fear of prolonged dying, and desire for control rather than solely requests for hastened death. The Hospice and Palliative Nurses As

The Ottawa Charter in practice: community-led action to reduce health inequalities in the UK.

This article presents a practice-based case study illustrating how the action areas and strategies outlined in the Ottawa Charter can be put into practice and reduces neighbourhood-level health inequalities. The Priority Neighbourhood Development (PND) programme in Worcestershire focused on small, high-need geographical areas identified through analyses of emergency hospital admissions and socio-economic data. Work in the socio-economically deprived Westlands housing area is described in detail. Community development workers mapped local assets and deficits, enabling residents to challenge sti

Nematode communities as bioindicators of forest soil health: responses to degradation and restoration practices.

Deforestation and forest degradation fundamentally alter subterranean ecosystems and the biological health of soils, yet belowground recovery trajectories remain poorly integrated into restoration monitoring frameworks. Soil nematodes are powerful bioindicators, but their application in forests has largely extrapolated from agricultural paradigms without accounting for forest-specific food web structures and dynamics. This review consolidates current understanding of nematode community responses to factors contributing to forest degradation, including deforestation, soil compaction, organic ma

Best practices for engaging with affected communities: chronic hepatitis B as a case study.

Hepatitis B is the single most common cause of liver cancer, affecting > 250 million people worldwide (mostly in resource limited communities) and killing > 1 million people annually. The condition is marked by poor rates of diagnosis (14%) and treatment (8% of eligible individuals). As with many health conditions, engagement with the affected community is crucial for designing, promoting, and advocating for effective solutions in the health system. However, engagement with the affected community remains difficult in many instances due to variable understanding of the roles, capacities, and ex

How Community-Based Organizations View and Use Data: Practices, Challenges, and Opportunities.

This analysis aimed to define the data needs of community-based organizations (CBOs) after the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design during the summer/fall of 2023, 51 CBOs completed surveys and 24 participated in subsequent interviews. The CBOs provided social services to Black, Latinx, Asian, and/or low-income communities in the Chicago region. They varied in size, funding sources, and focus areas. Results showed that all used data, and 82.4% used population-level data. Data use expansion was limited by funding, staffing, data management systems, and skills

Developing a culturally adapted competency framework for community paramedicine practice in Saudi Arabia.

Community paramedicine (CP) has emerged globally as a model for extending healthcare access, but little evidence exists on how it can be adapted to the sociocultural and systemic context of Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to develop a culturally tailored competency framework for CP to inform education, practice, and policy. A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with 15 experts from diverse regions and professional roles in Saudi Arabia was adopted. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify the core competencies. To complement the qualitative synthesis and explore structural pa

DonnaRosa Project: Exploring Informal Communication Practices Among Breast Cancer Specialists.

Background: Healthcare communication often relies on complex digital infrastructures, yet clinicians increasingly adopt general-purpose Instant Messaging Apps (IMAs) such as WhatsApp® to meet unmet needs. DonnaRosa, an Italian community of breast cancer specialists founded in 2017, is a Community of Practice (CoP), where experts exchange second opinions, guidelines, and trial opportunities. This paper examines its origins, practices, and implications. Methods: A mixed-methods design was applied: (1) qualitative analysis of chat logs to identify interaction patterns and rules; (2) a 2024 online

General practitioners' and community pharmacists' beliefs and practices on opioids for non-malignant pain.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, opioid use has surged, largely due to prescriptions for chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP). General practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists (CPs) play a major role in opioid prescribing for non-malignant pain. Exploring their personal beliefs and practices might reveal underlying mechanisms to identify measures that could halt the further escalation of opioid use. METHODS: Guided by the health belief model, a survey was designed and distributed nationwide to examine the practices and beliefs of GPs and CPs in the domains: threats, benefits, barriers and self-effica

Enteric infections and management practices among communities in a rural setting of northwest Ethiopia.

Infections with enteric pathogens have a high mortality and morbidity burden, as well as significant social and economic costs. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions are the leading risk factors for enteric infections, and prevention in low-income countries is still primarily focused on initiatives to improve access to improved WASH facilities. Rural communities in developing countries, on the other hand, have limited access to improved WASH services, which may result in a high burden of enteric infections. Limited information also exists about the prevalence of enteric infecti

A new model for general practice-led, regional, community-based, memory clinics.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a major international health issue with high impact on the patient, relatives, and broader society. Routine screening for dementia is limited, despite known benefit of early detection and intervention on quality of care and patient outcomes. Screening is particularly limited in rural and regional areas, despite high burden and projected growth of dementia in these populations. The current study aimed to implement a new general practitioner (GP) led, multidisciplinary, model of care providing dementia detection and referral pathway to a community-based specialist clinic

Knowledge, Observation and Practices Related to Neonatal Jaundice in a Rural Community in Kano, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) is a common condition and when not adequately treated leads to acute bilirubin encephalopathy/kernicterus. This largely preventable condition is an important cause of death and disability in low- and middle-income countries. Education, early detection and effective management are key for prevention and require an understanding of community knowledge and practices to foster appropriate behavior to prevent severe NNJ. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify knowledge, observation for jaundice (both active and passive) and practices related to NNJ in n

Community pharmacy interventions for health promotion: effects on professional practice and health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are an easily accessible and cost-effective platform for delivering health care worldwide, and the range of services provided has undergone rapid expansion in recent years. Thus, in addition to dispensing medication, pharmacy workers within community pharmacies now give advice on a range of health-promoting behaviours that aim to improve health and to optimise the management of long-term conditions. However, it remains uncertain whether these health-promotion interventions can change the professional practice of pharmacy workers, improve health behaviours and o
