Embodied concepts in Parkinson's disease: Insights from fruits versus animals semantic fluency impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Initial findings indicate that semantic memory retrieval of different categories, such as fruits and animals, is variably impacted in Parkinson's disease (PD). Importantly, theories of embodied cognition propose that these variances may stem from compromised motor processing in PD patients. Indeed, the conceptual representation of the fruits category may involve aspects of manipulability and graspability, which are less relevant for the animals category. We aimed to assess semantic memory retrieval of fruits versus animals category as assessed by semantic fluency (SF) in PD by using

The conceptualization of acute bronchitis in general practice - a fuzzy problem with consequences? A qualitative study in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Acute bronchitis is one of the most frequent diagnoses in primary care. Scientifically, it is conceptualized as a viral infection. Still, general practitioners (GPs) often prescribe antibiotics for acute bronchitis. The explanation for this discrepancy may lie in a different conceptualization of acute bronchitis. Therefore, we wanted to know, how GPs conceptualize acute bronchitis, and how they differentiate it from common cold and pneumonia. Furthermore, we tried to find out the GPs' reasons for prescribing antibiotics in those cases. METHODS: To answer our study questions, we co

Decoding actions at different levels of abstraction.

Brain regions that mediate action understanding must contain representations that are action specific and at the same time tolerate a wide range of perceptual variance. Whereas progress has been made in understanding such generalization mechanisms in the object domain, the neural mechanisms to conceptualize actions remain unknown. In particular, there is ongoing dissent between motor-centric and cognitive accounts whether premotor cortex or brain regions in closer relation to perceptual systems, i.e., lateral occipitotemporal cortex, contain neural populations with such mapping properties. Impacts of wheelchair acquisition on children from a person-occupation-environment interactional perspective.

PURPOSE: Mobility aids not only compensate for a locomotor disability, they also increase users' opportunities for social participation. The objective was to explore the impacts of wheelchair (WC) acquisition on children's social participation, personal factors and social environment. METHODS: A literature review was done in MEDLINE for the years 1996 to 2011 (June) with an age range from birth to 12 years. The studies selected had to be in French or English and concern the impacts of a WC on children, their social participation or social environment. RESULTS: The studies retained (n = 9) in

Understanding vulnerability for depression from a cognitive neuroscience perspective: A reappraisal of attentional factors and a new conceptual framework.

We propose a framework to understand increases in vulnerability for depression after recurrent episodes that links attention processes and schema activation to negative mood states, by integrating cognitive and neurobiological findings. Depression is characterized by a mood-congruent attentional bias at later stages of information processing. The basic idea of our framework is that decreased activity in prefrontal areas, mediated by the serotonin metabolism which the HPA axis controls, is associated with an impaired attenuation of subcortical regions, resulting in prolonged activation of the a

Dyslexic participants show intact spontaneous categorization processes.

We examine the performance of dyslexic participants on an unsupervised categorization task against that of matched non-dyslexic control participants. Unsupervised categorization is a cognitive process critical for conceptual development. Existing research in dyslexia has emphasized perceptual tasks and supervised categorization tasks (for which intact attentional processes are paramount), but there have been no studies on unsupervised categorization. Our investigation was based on Pothos and Chater's (Cognit. Sci., 2002; 26: 303-343) model of unsupervised categorization and the corresponding m

Object permanence in lemurs.

Object permanence, the ability to mentally represent objects that have disappeared from view, should be advantageous to animals in their interaction with the natural world. The objective of this study was to examine whether lemurs possess object permanence. Thirteen adult subjects representing four species of diurnal lemur (Eulemur fulvus rufus, Eulemur mongoz, Lemur catta and Hapalemur griseus) were presented with seven standard Piagetian visible and invisible object displacement tests, plus one single visible test where the subject had to wait predetermined times before allowed to search, an

Interactions of language and cognition in deaf learners: from research to practice.

It is well established that deaf children begin school lagging in general language skills relative to hearing peers, and that deaf and hearing students differ with regard to literacy and other academic skills. These domains are typically treated separately, by different groups of researchers, with little consideration for common factors that might underlie them. It appears, however, that both of these situations might reflect differences in conceptual and content knowledge, as well as linguistic knowledge, between and among deaf and hearing learners. Such differences would clearly contribute t

Inferential language in high-function children with autism.

Despite average verbal intelligence, high-function children with autism have social comprehension deficits that are expressed by how they use and understand language. In this paper, we explored the general hypothesis that high-function children with autism make some, but not all, of the pragmatic inferences necessary for successful communication, even when they have the ability to perform noninferential language tasks. We contrasted the ability of 8 high-function children with autism (each with Verbal IQ > 70) and typically developing children to use and understand: pragmatic inferences about

A comparison of phonological skills in children with reading comprehension difficulties and children with decoding difficulties.

This paper examines phonological skills in children with two distinct forms of reading difficulty: comprehension problems and decoding problems. In the first study a group of children with normal decoding skills but poor reading comprehension skills was studied. These children were found to have age-appropriate phonological skills. It is argued that normal phonological skills have enabled them to develop proficient decoding skills. A second study assessed the phonological skills of a group of children with decoding difficulties. These children showed marked deficits on tests of phonological sk

Pretending and believing: issues in the theory of ToMM.

Commonsense notions of psychological causality emerge early and spontaneously in the child. What implications does this have for our understanding of the mind/brain and its development? In the light of available evidence, the child's "theory of mind" is plausibly the result of the growth and functioning of a specialized mechanism (ToMM) that produces domain-specific learning. The failure of early spontaneous development of "theory of mind" in childhood autism can be understood in terms of an impairment in the growth and functioning of this mechanism. ToMM constructs agent-centered descriptions

Lack of comprehension of cause-effect relations in tool-using capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

Four tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella), successful in a tool task in which they used a stick to push a reward out of a tube, were tested in a similar task, with a tube with a hole and a small trap. Depending on where the stick was inserted, the reward was pushed either out of the tube or into the trap. With the trap-tube task, we assessed whether the monkeys understood the cause-effect relation between their behavior and the outcome. In Experiment 1, each subject underwent 14 10-trial blocks with the trap tube. Three subjects performed at chance level. The 4th subject's (Rb) performance i

[Recollections and ideas in tobacco dependence].

++Clinico-psychopathological and patho-psychological methods were employed to study statically and over time the main types of reproducing recollections, ideas and correlations to the motivation and formation of tobacco dependence in 480 smokers and non-smokers. Three basic types of reproducing recollections and ideas, namely mental, image-bearing, and mental and image-bearing were distinguished. The main space and time constitutional forms of the types of the development of recollections and ideas are presented. In patients with tobacco dependence, the characteristic features of the explored

Contextual processing of abstract concepts reveals neural representations of nonlinguistic semantic content.

Concepts develop for many aspects of experience, including abstract internal states and abstract social activities that do not refer to concrete entities in the world. The current study assessed the hypothesis that, like concrete concepts, distributed neural patterns of relevant nonlinguistic semantic content represent the meanings of abstract concepts. In a novel neuroimaging paradigm, participants processed two abstract concepts (convince, arithmetic) and two concrete concepts (rolling, red) deeply and repeatedly during a concept-scene matching task that grounded each concept in typical cont

Counter-ion complexes for enhanced drug loading in nanocarriers: Proof-of-concept and beyond.

Enhanced drug loading is an important prerequisite of nanomedicines, to reach administration dose while reducing the amount of excipient. Considering biocompatible and biodegradable polymers such as PLGA, pH dependent solubility characteristics along with limited organic solvent solubility of the drug hampers nanoparticle (NP) preparation. To improve loading of such molecules, a method based on using counter ions for complex formation is proposed. Formed complex alters the intrinsic solubility of active substance via electrostatic interaction without chemical modification. A proof-of-concept s

Overcoming the costs of selective attention: Resolving rule-uncertainty supports acquisition of generalizable memory traces.

Research on category learning shows that people gradually allocate attention to deterministic features. Categorization models formalize this shift in attention as a process of "stretching" and "shrinking" dimensions of an internal representation, such that attended features bear a greater influence on choice than those ignored. Consistent with this view, gaze allocated to deterministic features increases alongside categorization accuracy. Going beyond the established relationship between gaze and performance, this work investigates whether gaze determines which features are encoded in the firs

Mapping concept and relational semantic representation in the brain using large language models.

How the brain organizes semantic information is one of the most challenging and expansive questions in cognitive neuroscience. Prior studies have shed light on how the brain represents concepts, but where relations are represented, independently of concept information, remains unclear. To examine this issue, we submitted short texts to a contemporary large language model and extracted relational embeddings for scene-object pairs based on the model's residual stream activity. Using behavioral data (n = 636), we found that these embeddings capture independent information about scenes and objects

Distinctive semantic features in the healthy adult brain.

The role of semantic features, which are distinctive (e.g., a zebra's stripes) or shared (e.g. has four legs) for accessing a concept, has been studied in detail in early neurodegenerative disease such as semantic dementia (SD). However, potential neural underpinnings of such processing have not been studied in healthy adults. The current study examines neural activation patterns using fMRI while participants completed a feature verification task, in which they identified shared or distinctive semantic features for a set of natural kinds and man-made artifacts. The results showed that the ante
