When adult rats are pretreated with a 48-h-long 'repetitive nonreinforced sound exposure', performance in two-sound discriminative operant conditioning transiently improves. We have already proven that this 'sound exposure-enhanced discrimination' is dependent upon enhancement of the perceptual capacity of the auditory cortex. This study investigated principles governing decay of sound exposure-enhanced discrimination decay. Sound exposure-enhanced discrimination disappeared within approximately 72 h if animals were deprived of environmental sounds after sound exposure, and that shortened to l

Animal models provide significant insight into the development of typical and disordered sensory processing. Such models have been established to take advantage of physical and behavioral characteristics of specific species. For example, the Mongolian gerbil is a well-established model for auditory processing, with a hearing range similar in frequency to that of humans and an easily accessible cochlea. Recently, early-life stress (ELS) has been shown to affect sensory processing in auditory, visual, and somatosensory neural regions. To understand the functional impact of ELS, it is necessary t

Cocaine exposure induces changes in the expression of numerous genes, in part through epigenetic modifications. We have initially shown that cocaine increases the expression of the chromatin remodeling protein methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) and characterized the protein phosphatase-1Cβ (PP1Cβ) gene, as repressed by passive i.p. cocaine injections through a Mecp2-mediated mechanism involving de novo DNA methylation. Both proteins being involved in learning and memory processes, we investigated whether voluntary cocaine administration would similarly affect their expression using an operan

A 2-yr-old male reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) presented with severe midcervical segmental torticollis upon arrival as an incoming shipment. Despite initial medical management, the giraffe developed marked neck sensitivity, focal muscle spasms, and decreased cervical range of motion. Using operant conditioning to assist patient positioning and tolerance to cervical manipulation, a series of manually applied chiropractic treatments were applied to the affected cervical vertebrae in an effort to restore normal cervical mobility. Laser therapy and cervical range of motion

In the U.S., a baby is born with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) every 15 min-a rate that has increased sevenfold since 2004. Clinical studies have established intrauterine exposure to addictive drugs as a risk factor for adverse health outcomes in adolescence, including increased propensity for future illicit drug use. Despite extensive knowledge regarding common mechanisms of action in the neural circuitry that drives opioid and alcohol reward, there are limited data on the risks infants with NOWS face regarding alcohol use later in life. Our laboratory has developed a clinically

The biological functions of oxytocin in attachment and bonding between mother and infant in parturition and breastfeeding and between adults have been studied extensively. However, most current authors have proposed that infant attachment to the mother is learned through operant conditioning mechanisms via the infant's brain and central nervous system. We propose that oxytocin levels in the mother and infant are co-regulated by emotional connection or disconnection, and that the autonomic co-conditioning learning mechanism can be exploited to change a negative physiological and behavioral resp

In experiments using a total of 144 albino rat subjects, the authors assessed the ability of fear-weakening treatments to prevent fear renewal (relapse). Conditioned suppression of operant behavior served as the measure of fear in an A-B-A (acquisition-treatment-test) renewal paradigm. In Experiment 1, 100 nonreinforced exposures to a feared cue during treatment (extinction) did not reduce fear renewal relative to 20 exposures. In Experiment 2, explicitly unpaired (EU) treatments thwarted both renewal and reacquisition. In Experiment 3, conditioned inhibition (CI) and differential conditioning

Behavioral interventions can augment the effects of antipsychotic medication in alleviating hallucinations, delusions, and conceptual disorganization. Such interventions may be based on operant conditioning and reinforcement strategies and on training in coping skills. Reinforcement strategies have been used to decrease the rate of confused speech, delusional talk, and other psychotic behaviors, but they appear to have little effect on the subjective distress patients experience as a result of such symptoms. Strategies that teach patients skills for coping with psychotic symptoms include cogni

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits including impaired information processing speed as assessed by the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) are common in multiple sclerosis (MS). Oscillatory markers of processing speed may be extracted from magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) resting-state recordings. In this context, an increased proportion of frontal slow-wave (theta, 4-8 Hz) to fast-wave (beta, 13-30 Hz) EEG activity was indicative of impaired SDMT performance. Such an increased theta/beta ratio may reflect oscillatory slowing associated with deficits in attention cont

For the first time in neurobiology-related issues, the synergistic spatial dynamics of EEG and fMRI (BOLD phenomenon) was studied during cognitive alpha biofeedback training in the operant conditioning mode (acoustic reinforcement of alpha-rhythm development and stability). Significant changes in alpha-rhythm intensity were found in T6 electrode area (Brodmann area 37). Brodmann areas related to solving alpha-training tasks and maximally involved in the formation of new neuronal network were middle and superior temporal gyri (areas 21, 22, and 37), fusiform gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus (areas

Beginning with the application of operant conditioning principles as part of inpatient treatment, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for anorexia nervosa (AN) has been insufficiently studied. Its efficacy remains in question. By contrast, manual-based CBT is the first-line treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa (BN) although its effects are limited. More effective methods are needed for non-responders to current therapy. Despite its well-established efficacy, CBT for BN is relatively rarely used in the US. Research on dissemination is a priority. Modified CBT and behavioral weight control progr

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a brain condition with heterogeneity in disease progression due to genetic and environmental variables. There is a critical need to better understand the relationship of AD pathologies and potential modifiable factors like hearing loss. Auditory processing measurements in AD mouse models have been reported, but the results are mixed. Most were conducted using evoked potential recordings measured under anesthesia, unlike typical hearing assessments on aging adult humans. Here, we used operant conditioning and signal detection theory to measure daily pure tone behavio

Attention may be an important factor in tinnitus. Individuals most disturbed by their tinnitus differ from those who are not in terms of attention allocation. This study used an operant-conditioning animal model to examine the interaction between tinnitus and auditory vigilant attention as well as auditory selective attention. Tinnitus was induced in 90-day-old rats by a unilateral exposure to band-limited noise (120 dB, SPL). Tinnitus testing began 90 days following exposure; afterward animals were divided into three groups: Unexposed controls without tinnitus, Exposed without tinnitus, and E

BACKGROUND: Learning in exploratory and goal-directed behaviors can modify decision-making processes in the initiation of appropriate action and thereby transform the irregular and infrequent expression of such behaviors into inflexible, compulsive-like repetitive actions. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying such learning-derived behavioral plasticity remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: Appetitive operant conditioning, a form of associative learning, produces a long-lasting switch in the mollusk Aplysia's food-seeking behavior from irregular, impulsive-like radula biting movements into

Planaria, a freshwater flatworm with unique regenerative abilities, has emerged as a valuable model organism for studying learning and memory. A growing body of evidence shows that planarians can recover their learning behaviour even after decapitation and regeneration. Behavioural paradigms, including classical, operant, and threat-related conditioning responses, show the capacity of planaria in learning and expressing both appetitive and aversive memories. Evidence at the molecular level, further confirms the presence of principal neurotransmitters, including glutamate, gamma-aminobutyric ac

Slot machines are the most "addictive" games because (a) the disorder (pathological gambling) appears more rapidly in these games than with any other; (b) most patients who seek professional help are mainly addicted to electronic gambling, and (c) even though it is not the more frequent game, most of all the money spent on legal games of chance (at least in Spain) goes to slot machines. Structural characteristics of slot machines induce to gamble because electronic games show the main parameters of operant conditioning, mainly the immediacy of the reinforcement. Ten pathological gamblers playe

Some characteristics of the discriminative stimulus (cue) effects of midazolam, a short-acting benzodiazepine, have been determined in rats. A standard two-bar operant conditioning procedure with food reinforcers delivered on a tandem schedule was used. The 0.4 mg/kg dose of midazolam used for training was well discriminated, typically yielding at least 95% correct responding. Other benzodiazepines increased the percentage of drug-appropriate responding in a dose-related manner and were generalized at doses which had little effect on the overall rate of responding. Doses of pentobarbitone whic

Prader- Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a complex neuroendocrine disorder that presents with hyperphagia, obesity, and social and cognitive impairment. The cognitive impairment is comparatively under-researched in PWS and in the Magel2-null mouse model. Cognitive function is commonly trained and tested in mice after the manipulation of metabolic state to induce motivation, yet physiologic function in the Magel2-null mouse model is most commonly assessed in the fed state. This project evaluates Magel2-null mouse physiology in ad libitum, acute fast, and chronic restriction settings to establish a basel

The fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), an RNA-binding protein, regulates cocaine-induced neuronal plasticity and is critical for the normal development of drug-induced locomotor sensitization, as well as reward-related learning in the conditioned place preference assay. However, it is unknown whether FMRP impacts behaviors that are used to more closely model substance use disorders. Utilizing a cocaine intravenous self-administration (IVSA) assay in Fmr1 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) littermate mice, we find that, despite normal acquisition and extinction learning, Fmr1 KO mice fa

BACKGROUND: Rewarding stimuli in associative learning can transform the irregularly and infrequently generated motor patterns underlying motivated behaviors into output for accelerated and stereotyped repetitive action. This transition to compulsive behavioral expression is associated with modified synaptic and membrane properties of central neurons, but establishing the causal relationships between cellular plasticity and motor adaptation has remained a challenge.
RESULTS: We found previously that changes in the intrinsic excitability and electrical synapses of identified neurons in Aplysia'
