[Differences in contraceptive practice in the city of São Paulo, Brazil: results of the Ouvindo Mulheres population survey].

Contraception is essential for women to be able to regulate their fertility, exercising a key dimension of reproductive rights. However, little is known about how women deal with this challenge in Brazil's largest city, São Paulo. To fill this gap, the population survey Ouvindo Mulheres: Contracepção no Município de São Paulo was conducted with a probabilistic sample of 4,000 women 15 to 44 years of age living in this city in 2015. This article presents the prevalence of contraceptive practice and analyzes factors associated with lack of contraception use and with types of contraceptives. Prev

Pelvic inflammatory disease: the influence of contraceptive, sexual, and social life events.

In order to determine associations between pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and contraceptive, sexual, and social life events, 620 Danish women aged 15-54 were invited to participate in an in-depth interview. Of 585 participating women, 459 were consecutive gynecological in- or outpatients, and 126 were randomly selected from visitors in general practice. Data were analyzed by multivariate test statistics. The mean number of PIDs thereby retrospectively assessed was 1.0. Two-thirds had never had PID, one third had had on average 3 PIDs. The sexual parameter which had the highest predictive va

Embodiment, agency, unmet need: Young women's experiences in the use and non-use of contraception in Khayelitsha, South Africa.

Globally, high rates of unintended pregnancy occur despite widespread distribution of modern contraceptive methods, reflecting the complexity of individual contraceptive use. The concept of unmet need provides a framework for addressing the gap between women's desire to prevent pregnancy and the ability of health services to meet women's contraceptive needs. Through in-depth interviews in Khayelitsha, South Africa, we examine 14 young women's experiences with contraception, interrogating how and why reproductive intentions and outcomes often differ markedly. Three main themes were identified a

Contraceptive Use Among Women in the United States Aged 18-44 Years with Selected Medical Contraindications to Estrogen.

Objective: Medical contraindications to estrogen limit women's contraceptive options. This study assessed the association between selected medical contraindications to estrogen on contraceptive use and examined whether contraindications serve as a barrier to the prevention of unintended pregnancy. Materials and Methods: We analyzed women aged 18-44 at risk of unintended pregnancy participating in the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Survey questions queried women regarding contraceptive use and contraindications to estrogen use. We assessed the most recently used contraceptive

Factors influencing women's decisions regarding birth planning in a rural setting in Kenya and their implications for family planning programmes.

Evidence suggests that socio-cultural barriers that limit the ability of women in sub-Saharan Africa to make decisions regarding contraceptive use and childbearing contribute to the slow uptake of contraception in this region. This paper explores factors influencing women's decisions regarding contraceptive uptake, switching and discontinuation, and the implications of those decisions for family planning programmes. Data were from in-depth interviews that were conducted in 2018 with 42 women who participated in a longitudinal research project implemented in Homa Bay County of Kenya. Participan

Towards responsible ejaculations: the moral imperative for male contraceptive responsibility.

In this paper, I argue that men should take primary responsibility for protecting against pregnancy. Male long-acting reversible contraceptives are currently in development, and, once approved, should be used as the standard method for avoiding pregnancy. Since women assume the risk of pregnancy when they engage in penis-in-vagina sex, men should do their utmost to ensure that their ejaculations are responsible, otherwise women shoulder a double burden of pregnancy risk plus contraceptive responsibility. Changing the expectations regarding responsibility for contraception would render penis-in

Motivational interviewing to promote long-acting reversible contraception among Rwandan couples wishing to prevent or delay pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Few family-planning programs in Africa base demand creation and service delivery on theoretical models. Motivational interviewing is a counseling modality that facilitates reflection on the benefits and disadvantages of a health outcome to encourage behavior change. OBJECTIVES: We evaluate a couples-focused joint family-planning and HIV counseling intervention using motivational interviewing to enhance uptake of long-acting reversible contraception (Paragard copper intrauterine device or Jadelle hormonal implant) among Rwandan couples. STUDY DESIGN: In this experimental study, co

Contraceptive use among 'at-risk' women in a metropolitan area in Ghana.

Engaging in risky sexual behaviors puts a woman at increased risk of acquiring unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Barrier contraceptives protect against both. Field workers interviewed 1,070 such 'at-risk' women aged 18-35 years who had at least three coital acts per week and at least two sex partners in the previous three months to establish the prevalence of contraceptive use in the Kumasi metropolis in Ghana. Awareness and use of contraception applied to 96.4 and 50% of these women, respectively. The male condom was the commonest form of contraception (32%) followed

Male contraception.

The provision of safe, effective contraception has been revolutionized in the past 40 yr following the development of synthetic steroids and the demonstration that administration of combinations of sex steroids can be used to suppress ovulation and, subsequently, other reproductive functions. This review addresses the current standing of male contraception, long the poor relation in family planning but currently enjoying a resurgence in both scientific and political interest as it is recognized that men have a larger role to play in the regulation of fertility, whether seen in geopolitical or

Oral contraceptive use and the risk of chlamydial and gonococcal infections.

Oral contraceptive users were compared with nonusers with respect to the rate of cervical infections by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The comparison was adjusted for differences in demographic and behavioral characteristics between the two groups. The rates of infection among oral contraceptive users were increased by approximately 70% (statistically significant) for both pathogens. Cervical ectopy was implicated in the increased rate of chlamydia but not gonorrhea. Rates of gonorrheal infection differed significantly among oral contraceptive formulations; rates were higher

Oral contraceptives are not an independent risk factor for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or high-risk human papillomavirus infections.

BACKGROUND: Oral contraception (OC) has been proclaimed by the IARC as a risk factor of cervical cancer (CC), on prolonged use by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) positive women. However, the available data are far from complete, and more evidence is necessary on the potential confounding effects of sexual behavior and HPV infection. The aim of the present was study to analyse the risk estimates for OC users in order to develop several intermediate end-point markers in cervical carcinogenesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cohort of 3,187 women, enrolled in a multi-center screening trial in thr

Parent-child communication and adolescent sexual behavior.

Data collected over a two-year period from more than 500 teenagers and their mothers indicate that neither parental attitudes toward premarital sex nor parent-child communication about sex and contraception appear to affect teenagers' subsequent sexual and contraceptive behavior. Teenagers are often ignorant of their parents' attitudes toward sex-related issues, and they and their parents often contradict one another in describing the kinds of sex-related conversations they have had. In only two cases was a significant relationship found between communication and adolescent behavior: Girls who

Contraceptive use by adolescent females in relation to knowledge, and to time and method of contraceptive counseling.

Contraceptive behavior of adolescent females was examined in relation to their level of knowledge, and time and method of contraceptive counseling. Subjects were 122 subscribers to a prepaid health plan, 13-18 years of age, unmarried, sexually active, and not desiring pregnancy. Contraceptive counseling was offered to 62 adolescents following receipt of a negative pregnancy test and to 60 adolescents following a routine medical visit. The 80 adolescents who chose to participate in the study were randomly assigned to a conventional or developmental method of counseling. The effectiveness of the

More than just vaginal intercourse: anal intercourse and condom use patterns in the context of "main" and "casual" sexual relationships among urban minority adolescent females.

PURPOSE: Receptive anal intercourse has long been recognized as a risk factor for the transmission of HIV and STIs. Most HIV/STI prevention messages continue to emphasize penile-vaginal transmission, so many teens do not recognize anal intercourse as risky sexual behavior. This purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of anal intercourse, and to describe the relationship between types of sexual relationships (main vs. casual), types of sexual behaviors (vaginal vs. anal sex), and types of contraception used among inner-city sexually experienced adolescents. METHODS: Reproductive

The association of hormonal contraceptive use and HPV prevalence.

Women diagnosed with cervical cancer report longer duration and more recent use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs). It is unclear whether COC use is associated with upstream events of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection prior to development of clinical disease. The objective of our study was to assess the association of contraceptive use on the risk for prevalent HPV infection in a cohort of long-term hormonal contraceptive (HC) users. One thousand and seventy (n = 1,070) HIV-negative women aged 20-37 from Thailand enrolled in a prospective study of the natural history of HPV. Baseline HP

Reproductive health among women living with HIV attending Melbourne Sexual Health Centre for HIV care from February 2019 to February 2020.

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV are a minority population with unique care needs. Rates of unintended pregnancy are higher among women living with HIV versus HIV negative women. However, uptake of contraception among women living with HIV including long-acting-reversible contraceptives (LARCs) remains low. This quality improvement project aimed to identify gaps in reproductive healthcare for women living with HIV attending Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC). METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of women living with HIV attending MSHC for HIV care February 2019-February 2020. Wome

Hormonal Contraceptive Use During Relationship Formation and Sexual Desire During Pregnancy.

Women who are regularly cycling exhibit different partner preferences than those who use hormonal contraception. Preliminary evidence appears to suggest that during pregnancy women's partner preferences also diverge from those prevalent while regularly cycling. This is consistent with the general assertion that women's mate preferences are impacted by hormonal variation. During pregnancy, women's preferences are thought to closely resemble those displayed by women who are using hormonal contraception. Here, based on this literature, we compared levels of sexual desire among pregnant women who
