BACKGROUND: This paper presents a deep learning model for the automated segmentation of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs).
METHODS: The model was trained using treatment planning data from 199 Gamma Knife (GK) exams, comprising 171 cases with a single CCM and 28 cases with multiple CCMs. The training data included initial MRI images with target CCM regions manually annotated by neurosurgeons. For the extraction of data related to the brain parenchyma, we employed a mask region-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN). Subsequently, this data was processed using a 3D convolutional

In this study, we developed a lightweight and rapid convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for chest X-ray images; it primarily consists of a redesigned feature extraction (FE) module and multiscale feature (MF) module and validated using publicly available COVID-19 datasets. Experiments were conducted on multiple updated versions of the COVID-19 Radiography Database, a publicly accessible dataset on Kaggle. The database contained images categorized into three classes: COVID-19 coronavirus, viral or bacterial pneumonia, and normal. The results revealed that the proposed method achieve

BACKGROUND: With the development of steganography technology, lawbreakers can implement covert communication in social networks more easily, exacerbating network security risks. Sterilization of image steganography methods can eliminate secret messages to block the transmission of illegal covert communication. However, existing methods overly rely on cover-stego image pairs and are unable to sanitize unknown image, which reduces stego image blocking rate in social networks.
METHODS: To address the above problems, this paper proposes an effective sterilization of image steganography method usi

This paper presents the results of a study performed on Parallel Convolutional Neural Network (PCNN) toward detecting heart abnormalities from the heart sound signals. The PCNN preserves dynamic contents of the signal in a parallel combination of the recurrent neural network and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The performance of the PCNN is evaluated and compared to the one obtained from a Serial form of the Convolutional Neural Network (SCNN) as well as two other baseline studies: a Long- and Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network and a Conventional CNN (CCNN). We employed a well-known

World health organization (WHO) reports around 2.2 billion people in the world as visually challenged which is mostly due to the age-related eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract, diabetic retinopathy (DR) and glaucoma. These diseases lead to blindness if not diagnosed at an early stage. This paper focuses on the identification of the age-related eye diseases at an early stage using retinal fundus images taken from online dataset and pre-processed using maximum entropy transformation. The pre-processed images were fed to a convolution neural network (CNN), which

The nonlinear dynamic features can effectively describe the acoustic characteristics of normal and pathological voice. In this paper, the phase space reconstruction and convolution neural network are used to classify the normal and pathological voice. The phase space information of normal and pathological voice is reconstructed using delay time and embedding dimension, the one-dimensional signal is converted to a two-dimensional matrix, and the reconstructed trajectory graph sample of the signal is generated. The trajectory graph samples are used as the input of the VGG-like convolutional neur

In the late December of 2019, a novel coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, China. In March 2020, WHO announced this epidemic had become a global pandemic and that the novel coronavirus may be mild to most people. However, some people may experience a severe illness that results in hospitalization or maybe death. COVID-19 classification remains challenging due to the ambiguity and similarity with other known respiratory diseases such as SARS, MERS, and other viral pneumonia. The typical symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, chills, shortness of breath, loss of smell and taste, headache, sore t

The recent increase in reliable, simultaneous high channel count extracellular recordings is exciting for physiologists and theoreticians because it offers the possibility of reconstructing the underlying neuronal circuits. We recently presented a method of inferring this circuit connectivity from neuronal spike trains by applying the generalized linear model to cross-correlograms. Although the algorithm can do a good job of circuit reconstruction, the parameters need to be carefully tuned for each individual dataset. Here we present another method using a Convolutional Neural Network for Esti

The task of segmenting cytoplasm in cytology images is one of the most challenging tasks in cervix cytological analysis due to the presence of fuzzy and highly overlapping cells. Deep learning-based diagnostic technology has proven to be effective in segmenting complex medical images. We present a two-stage framework based on Mask RCNN to automatically segment overlapping cells. In stage one, candidate cytoplasm bounding boxes are proposed. In stage two, pixel-to-pixel alignment is used to refine the boundary and category classification is also presented. The performance of the proposed method

Background: Today's machine-learning based dermatologic research has largely focused on pigmented/non-pigmented lesions concerning skin cancers. However, studies on machine-learning-aided diagnosis of depigmented non-melanocytic lesions, which are more difficult to diagnose by unaided eye, are very few. Objective: We aim to assess the performance of deep learning methods for diagnosing vitiligo by deploying Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and comparing their diagnosis accuracy with that of human raters with different levels of experience. Methods: A Chinese in-house dataset (2,876 images)

Histopathologic evaluation of muscle biopsy samples is essential for classifying and diagnosing muscle diseases. However, the numbers of experienced specialists and pathologists are limited. Although new technologies such as artificial intelligence are expected to improve medical reach, their use with rare diseases, such as muscle diseases, is challenging because of the limited availability of training datasets. To address this gap, we developed an algorithm based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and collected 4041 microscopic images of 1400 hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained pathology

During the COVID-19 pandemic, dermatologists reported an array of different cutaneous manifestations of the disease. It is challenging to discriminate COVID-19-related cutaneous manifestations from other closely resembling skin lesions. The aim of this study was to generate and evaluate a novel CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) ensemble architecture for detection of COVID-19-associated skin lesions from clinical images. An ensemble model of three different CNN-based algorithms was trained with clinical images of skin lesions from confirmed COVID-19 positive patients, healthy controls as well

This study evaluates the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in risk stratifying the malignant potential of thyroid nodules alongside traditional methods such as American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR TIRADS). The data set consisted of 651 pathology-proven thyroid nodules (500 benign, 151 malignant) from 571 patients collected at a single tertiary academic medical center. Each thyroid nodule consisted of two orthogonal views (sagittal and transverse) for a total of 1,302 grayscale images. A CNN classifier was developed to identify malignanc

The economic and social impacts due to diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in the latest years have been significant. Currently, no specific treatment or commercial vaccine exists for the control and prevention of arboviruses, thereby making entomological characterization fundamental in combating diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. The morphological identification of mosquitos includes a visual exam of the samples. It is time consuming and requires adequately trained professionals. Accordingly, the development of a new automated method for realizing mosquito-perception and -classifi

OBJECTIVE: Identifying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using brain data remains challenging. Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) offers an affordable and noninvasive approach, but identifying predictive signals in EEG data has met with little success, even with the application of traditional machine learning methods. We explored whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) applied to EEG time-frequency representations can distinguish individuals with OCD from healthy controls.
METHOD: We collected resting-state EEG data from 20 unmedicated participants (10 with OCD, 10 healthy cont

The ageing population and the preference to remain at home pose significant challenges for ensuring the safety and well-being of older adults, particularly those living alone. This study investigates whether deviations in daily behaviour can be identified through a noninvasive monitoring system based on simple, low-cost presence sensors combined with unsupervised deep learning models. The objective is to detect behaviour changes potentially related to cognitive or functional decline, for later assessment, without performing any clinical diagnosis. Unsupervised convolutional autoencoders are us

Physics-aware recurrent convolutional networks (PARC) have demonstrated strong performance in predicting nonlinear spatiotemporal dynamics by embedding differential operators directly into the computational graph of a neural network. However, pixel-based convolutions are restricted to static, uniform Cartesian grids, making them ill-suited to following evolving localized structures in an efficient manner. Graph neural networks (GNNs) naturally handle irregular spatial discretizations, but existing graph-based physics-aware deep learning (PADL) methods have difficulty handling extreme nonlinear

The analysis of fundus images is critical for the early detection and diagnosis of retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Traditional diagnostic workflows, however, often depend on manual interpretation and are both time- and resource-intensive. To address these limitations, we propose an automated and interpretable clinical decision support framework based on a hybrid feature extraction model called HOG-CNN. Our key contribution lies in effectively integrating handcrafted Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) features with rep
