Respiratory toxicity of copper was tested in Wistar rats by spraying copper sulfate (330 g/l spray) for daily periods of 1 hr in a self-contained chamber for up to 10 days. The clinical signs of camel sway disease in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province were defined. The contents of eight minerals in soils, in forage and in the blood and hair of bactrian camels from this region were determined. The related blood indices were also measured. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of copper by Desulfovibrio vulgaris, a sulfate reducing bacterium (SRB), was investigated in anaerobic vials with a fixed broth volume of 40 mL but varied headspace volumes (10 mL, 85 mL 160 mL). A bacterium isolated from microbial mats located on a polynesian atoll produced a high molecular weight (3,000 kDa) and highly sulphated exopolysaccharide. Previous studies showed that the chemical structure of this EPS consisted of neutral sugars, uronic acids, and high proportions of acetate and sulphate groups.
