Extinct and extant termites reveal the fidelity of behavior fossilization in amber.

Fossils encompassing multiple individuals provide rare direct evidence of behavioral interactions among extinct organisms. However, the fossilization process can alter the spatial relationship between individuals and hinder behavioral reconstruction. Here, we report a Baltic amber inclusion preserving a female-male pair of the extinct termite species Electrotermes affinis. The head-to-abdomen contact in the fossilized pair resembles the tandem courtship behavior of extant termites, although their parallel body alignment differs from the linear alignment typical of tandem runs. To solve this in

Decreased reproductive performance in xCT-knockout male mice.

Sulphoxidation occurs in protamines that are enriched in cysteine and supplies chromatin for packaging. The extracellular fluid contains higher levels of oxidised cysteine (cystine), and some cells utilise system xc-, a cystine transporter in which xCT is the main protein component, to fulfil the need for cysteine. We hypothesised that system xc- might ensure the supply of cysteine needed for spermatogenesis. The reproductive ability of xCT-/- male mice at 6- to 18-weeks of age appeared to be lower than xCT+/+ male mice. The courtship behaviour of the xCT-/- male mice was undynamic, which appe

Refinement of ectopic protein expression through the GAL4/UAS system in Bombyx mori: application to behavioral and developmental studies.

Silkmoth, Bombyx mori, is one of the important model insects in which transgenic techniques and the GAL4/UAS system are applicable. However, due to cytotoxicity and low transactivation activity of GAL4, effectiveness of the GAL4/UAS system and its application in B. mori are still limited. In the present study, we refined the previously reported UAS vector by exploiting transcriptional and translational enhancers, and achieved 200-fold enhancement of reporter GFP fluorescence in the GAL4/UAS system. Enhanced protein expression of membrane-targeted GFP and calcium indicator protein (GCaMP5G) dra

Females of an African cichlid fish display male-typical social dominance behavior and elevated androgens in the absence of males.

Social environment can affect the expression of sex-typical behavior in both males and females. Males of the African cichlid species Astatotilapia burtoni have long served as a model system to study the neural, endocrine, and molecular basis of socially plastic dominance behavior. Here we show that in all-female communities of A. burtoni, some individuals acquire a male-typical dominance phenotype, including aggressive territorial defense, distinctive color patterns, and courtship behavior. Furthermore, dominant females have higher levels of circulating androgens than either subordinate female

Mobile larynx in Mongolian gazelle: Retraction of the larynx during rutting barks in male Mongolian gazelle (Procapra gutturosa Pallas, 1777).

This study provides the first evidence of pronounced temporary laryngeal descent in a bovid species. An elaborate acoustic display is prominent in male courtship behavior of polygynous Mongolian gazelle. During rut, rounding up of females is accompanied by continuous head-up barking by dominant males. Throughout the rut their evolutionarily enlarged larynx descends to a low mid-neck resting position. In the course of each bark the larynx is additionally retracted toward the sternum by 30% of the resting vocal tract length. A geometric model of active larynx movements was constructed by combini

Genetic analysis of female mating recognition between Drosophila ananassae and Drosophila pallidosa: application of interspecific mosaic genome lines.

Drosophila ananassae and Drosophila pallidosa are closely related species that can produce viable and fertile hybrids of both sexes, although strong sexual isolation exists between the two species. Females are thought to discriminate conspecific from heterospecific males based on their courtship songs. The genetic basis of female discrimination behavior was analyzed using isogenic females from interspecific mosaic genome lines that carry homozygous recombinant chromosomes. Multiple regression analysis indicated a highly significant effect of the left arm of chromosome 2 (2L) on the willingness

Isoform-specific control of male neuronal differentiation and behavior in Drosophila by the fruitless gene.

BACKGROUND: How the central nervous system (CNS) develops to implement innate behaviors remains largely unknown. Drosophila male sexual behavior has long been used as a model to address this question. The male-specific products of fruitless (fru) are pivotal to the emergence of this behavior. These putative transcription factors, containing one of three alternative DNA binding domains, determine the neuronal substrates for sexual behavior in male CNS. RESULTS: We isolated the first fru coding mutation, resulting in complete loss of one isoform. At the neuronal level, this isoform alone contro

From mandatory to voluntary testing: balancing human rights, religious and cultural values, and HIV/AIDS prevention in Ghana.

This paper examines efforts by some churches in Ghana to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. The analysis is based on focus group discussions with two groups of men and two groups of women, along with in-depth interviews with 13 pastors and marriage counsellors in the churches studied. In response to government and public criticisms about human rights violations, churches that previously imposed mandatory HIV testing on members planning to marry now have voluntary testing programmes. However, the results suggest that what the churches refer to as voluntary testing may not be truly voluntary. Cultur

Sexual and Relationship Interest, Knowledge, and Experiences Among Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Little research exists to describe sexual and romantic relationships among adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from their perspectives. Sexuality and intimacy are developmentally important and influence health and quality of life for all adolescents and young adults, including those with ASD. This study explored and compared the sex and relationship experiences of 27 adolescents and young adults with ASD (males = 20). Adolescents and young adults participated in semi-structured interviews to explore this topic. Using theme analysis, we uncovered four thematic categ

Male accessory gland molecules inhibit harmonic convergence in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit pathogens such as yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses to millions of human hosts annually [1]. As such, understanding Ae. aegypti courtship and mating biology could prove crucial to the success of disease control efforts that target reproduction. Potentially to communicate reproductive fitness [2,3], mosquito males and females harmonize their flight tones prior to mating in a behavior known as harmonic convergence (HC) [4]. Furthermore, after mating or treatment with extracts from male accessory glands (MAG), which make seminal fluid molecules,

Parallel pathways convey olfactory information with opposite polarities in Drosophila.

In insects, olfactory information received by peripheral olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) is conveyed from the antennal lobes (ALs) to higher brain regions by olfactory projection neurons (PNs). Despite the knowledge that multiple types of PNs exist, little is known about how these different neuronal pathways work cooperatively. Here we studied the Drosophila GABAergic mediolateral antennocerebral tract PNs (mlPNs), which link ipsilateral AL and lateral horn (LH), in comparison with the cholinergic medial tract PNs (mPNs). We examined the connectivity of mlPNs in ALs and found that most mlPNs

Of mice, birds, and men: the mouse ultrasonic song system has some features similar to humans and song-learning birds.

Humans and song-learning birds communicate acoustically using learned vocalizations. The characteristic features of this social communication behavior include vocal control by forebrain motor areas, a direct cortical projection to brainstem vocal motor neurons, and dependence on auditory feedback to develop and maintain learned vocalizations. These features have so far not been found in closely related primate and avian species that do not learn vocalizations. Male mice produce courtship ultrasonic vocalizations with acoustic features similar to songs of song-learning birds. However, it is ass

Asymmetric reproductive isolation during simultaneous reciprocal mating in pulmonates.

The generality of asymmetric reproductive isolation between reciprocal crosses suggests that the evolution of isolation mechanisms often proceeds in reciprocal asymmetry. In hermaphroditic snails that copulate simultaneously and reciprocally, asymmetry in premating isolation may not be readily detectable because the failure of the symmetric performance of courtship would prevent copulation from occurring. On the other hand, through their prolonged copulation, snails discriminate among mates when exchanging spermatophores for their benefit and thus may exhibit asymmetric reproductive isolation

Sex pheromone communication and its regulation by the sex determination pathway in cockroaches.

Sexual communication in animals orchestrates a series of interactive behaviors from locating and recognizing potential partners to courtship and final mating decisions and is thus critical for sexual reproduction and population fitness. Highly efficient communication between the sexes requires not only the production and emission of species-specific signals but also their precise detection and interpretation by the receiving individuals. Cockroaches, as one of the most evolutionarily ancient and successful group of insects, are quintessential chemical communicators that rely heavily on sex phe

Mating behavior and preliminary evidence of putative odor-mediated interactions in Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae).

Odour and contact chemical traces play central roles in the sexual communication of mites, mediating partner encounter and recognition of the female reproductive status. We investigated the mating behavior of Raoiella indica Hirst and the role of female-associated chemical cues in male attraction. Behavioral observations were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, and three complementary bioassays were performed: (i) detailed recording of courtship and copulation sequences, (ii) two-choice tests to evaluate male preference for arenas associated with females at different reproductive

Exposure of Zinc-induced Parkinson's disease-like non-motor and motor symptoms in relation to oxidative/nitrosative stress mediated neurodegeneration in the brain of Drosophila melanogaster.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent idiopathic neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, leading to locomotor impairment. Despite extensive research, the etiology of PD remains unclear, and existing experimental models for pharmacological evaluation do not fully replicate the disease's hallmarks, necessitating the development of a cost-effective and reliable alternative. In recent past, Drosophila melanogaster has been utilized as a model organism for various neurodegenerative diseases, including PD. T

Mating behavior of Pseudococcus calceolariae and Pseudococcus longispinus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae): are asexual reproduction and hybridization possible?

The study of insect reproduction is important from both basic and applied perspectives, particularly in mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), because of the diversity of reproduction modes and also because they are important agricultural pests. Sex pheromone control strategies are currently being developed for many species. Pseudococcus calceolariae (Maskell) and Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni Tozzetti) are closely related species that often coexist in the same host plant. In this study, mating behavior, the possible occurrence of asexual reproduction, and hybridization between them were

On the Behavioural Biology of the Mainland Serow: A Comparative Study.

Comparative behavioural studies help reconstruct the phylogeny of closely related species. In that respect, the serows Capricornis spp. occupy an important position as they have been assumed to be the closest forms to the ancestors of Caprinae. In spite of that, information on the behavioural repertoire of the mainland serow Capricornis sumatraensis is exceedingly poor. In this paper, we report data on the activity rhythms and social behaviour of rutting mainland serows in captivity (Central Thailand, January 1986; January-February 1987). Activity was bimodal with peaks in mid-afternoon and la

Variation of fitness and reproductive strategy in male Bufo raddei under environmental heavy metal pollution.

Environmental pollution is known to adversely affect amphibian reproduction and survival, however, the knowledge of environmental heavy metal pollution on fitness of male amphibian is largely unknown. The present study aimed to explore the variation in fitness of male Bufo raddei, a widespread anuran in northwest China, subjected to long-term heavy metal stress in Baiyin (BY) city. BY is heavily polluted by heavy metals mainly copper, zinc, lead and cadmium; meanwhile, Liujiaxia (LJX), a relatively unpolluted area, was chosen as control. Haploid, diploid, and triploid--discrimination ability against polyploid mating partner in the parasitic wasp, Bracon brevicornis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Because the quality of mating partners varies, females of several taxa have evolved the ability to discriminate against low-quality mates. Although males in the Hymenoptera are usually haploid, diploid males may occur in species with complementary sex determination. Diploid males are almost always sterile in most of the species studied so far. They are thus of very low quality as mating partners, especially when females mate only once in life. We hypothesize that hymenopteran females might have evolved the ability to discriminate against infertile diploid males and avoid mating with them. To t
