Associations between HIV testing and multilevel stigmas among gay men and other men who have sex with men in nine urban centers across the United States.

BACKGROUND: Complex manifestation of stigma across personal, community, and structural levels and their effect on HIV outcomes are less understood than effects in isolation. Yet, multilevel approaches that jointly assesses HIV criminalization and personal sexual behavior stigma in relation to HIV testing have not been widely employed or have only focused on specific subpopulations. The current study assesses the association of three types of MSM-related sexual behavior-related stigma (family, healthcare, general social stigma) measured at both individual and site levels and the presence/absenc

Juvenile delinquents revisited. Adult criminal activity.

We examined the subsequent criminal activities of delinquent boys classified as having either socialized conduct disorder, undersocialized conduct disorder, aggressive type, or undersocialized conduct disorder, unaggressive type. A follow-up study of more than ten years revealed profound differences in the likelihood of criminal convictions or incarcerations between socialized and undersocialized delinquents. The socialized delinquents have less chance of being either convicted of a crime or being imprisoned. This difference supports the previous studies that demonstrated that these classifica

Evaluation and Restoration of Competence to Stand Trial: Intercepting the Forensic System Using the Sequential Intercept Model.

The sequential intercept model (SIM) is used to reduce the penetration of persons with mental illness and substance use disorders in the criminal legal system. Its framework recommends identifying individuals with mental illness at various decision points of criminal case processing, from arrest to return from incarceration, so that they can be diverted toward treatment rather than permeate deeper into the criminal justice system. Communities frequently use the model to augment and inform jail diversion services. Despite the model's widespread adoption, individuals with serious mental illness,

Long-term consequences of childhood physical abuse.

This article reviews the literature on the long-term consequences of childhood physical abuse. Empirical research is discussed within 7 topic areas: aggressive and violent behavior, nonviolent criminal behavior, substance abuse, self-injurious and suicidal behavior, emotional problems, interpersonal problems, and academic and vocational difficulties. The studies reviewed involve primarily adult populations, although pertinent findings from literature on children and adolescents are briefly summarized. Some variables that affect the relation between physical abuse and long-term consequences are

Antisocial and prosocial behaviors as predictors of subsequent substance use in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Antisocial behavior is a known risk factor for substance use in adolescence, but the combined effects of antisocial and prosocial behaviors are unknown. This study examined whether five types of anti- and prosocial behaviors are associated with subsequent alcohol and substance use. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal cohort study of 3817 adolescents (55.3% females) aged 15 at baseline (T1) and 17 at follow-up (T2). Self-reports at T1 measured antisocial behaviors (criminal behavior, conduct problems) and prosocial behaviors (global prosociality, general trust, institutional trust)

Acquaintance Rape: Applying Crime Scene Analysis to the Prediction of Sexual Recidivism.

The aim of the current study was to enhance the assessment and predictive accuracy of risk assessments for sexual offenders by utilizing detailed crime scene analysis (CSA). CSA was conducted on a sample of 247 male acquaintance rapists from Berlin (Germany) using a nonmetric, multidimensional scaling (MDS) Behavioral Thematic Analysis (BTA) approach. The age of the offenders at the time of the index offense ranged from 14 to 64 years (M = 32.3; SD = 11.4). The BTA procedure revealed three behavioral themes of hostility, criminality, and pseudo-intimacy, consistent with previous CSA research o

The Etiology of Risk in Sexual Offenders: A Preliminary Model.

Sexual offender risk assessment practice is considered by many to be atheoretical. The identification of the most predictive risk factors and tools has typically overshadowed questions about etiology. To gain insight into the origins of criminal behavior among sexual offenders, we developed and validated an etiological model of risk based on the theoretical framework of Beech and Ward. Our model focused on persistence rather than onset, and encompassed both the sexual and nonsexual criminal activity of these offenders. It comprised two pathways. The first was characterized by sexual victimizat

Pathways to delinquent and sex offending behavior: The role of childhood adversity and environmental context in a treatment sample of male adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to greater Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) has been associated with increased likelihood of general and sex offending behaviors. However, few studies consider both the impact of varied ACE exposures and other early experiences on pathways to offending behaviors in adolescents who have engaged in sexually abusive behaviors. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of ACEs and sexual boundary problems within the home on the development of delinquent and sexually abusive behavior. PARTICIPANTS & SETTING: Data were collected from archival records o

Multiple Abnormalities in the Skull of a Prostitute. An Autopsy Report (1900).

OBJECTIVE: The study presents and comments on the publication of an autopsy report. CASE REPORT: In 1900 De Blasio published an article entitled "Multiple abnormalities in a prostitute's skull" in the "Journal of Psychiatry, Criminal Anthropology and related sciences". In this work De Blasio related anomalies at the cranial level to the presence of mental pathologies. The skull belonged to a 24-year-old prostitute who died of syphilitic hepatitis. In his article, De Blasio described the life of the woman, after which he gave a macroscopic description of the skull. De Blasio believed that the

Brief motivational intervention to reduce HIV risk and to increase HIV testing among offenders under community supervision.

Risky drug- and sex-related behaviors put criminal offenders at high risk for HIV. Intervening with this population under supervision can potentially reduce risk. This study reports a randomized trial that examines the efficacy of brief negotiation interviewing (BNI) compared to usual education activities. BNI is a computerized, self-directed intervention that combines a short structured interview with a brief counseling session. The study examined whether BNI could decrease HIV risks and increase testing for HIV in a cohort of criminal-justice-involved clients. The trial randomly assigned 212

Six-year follow-up of opioid addicts after admission to treatment.

Long-term behavioral outcome status of 990 daily opioid users, recorded in follow-up interviews about six years after admission to community-based treatment programs, was classified in terms of longitudinal patterns of opioid use. Sixty-one percent of these individuals had achieved abstinence from opioid drugs for a year or longer immediately before the follow-up interview. Compared with those who continued heavy opioid drug use, and with others who had problems with nonopioid drugs or alcohol over time, persons who achieved abstinence also had significantly better long-term outcomes on crimin

Increased HIV risk associated with criminal justice involvement among men on methadone.

This paper examines the relationship between HIV risk and criminal justice involvement among a random sample of 356 men enrolled in methadone maintenance treatment programs in New York City. Bivariate and logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the associations between measures of criminal justice involvement and participant HIV risk, controlling for socio-demographic variables. A lifetime history of incarceration was significantly associated with being HIV positive (Adjusted OR=5.08). Recent arrest was associated with unprotected vaginal sex and having multiple female sexual p

Flunitrazepam intake in male offenders.

The abuse of flunitrazepam (FZ) compounds is worldwide, and several studies have reflected on the consequences with regard to violence, aggression and criminal lifestyle of FZ users. Criminals take high doses of FZ or some other benzodiazepines to "calm down" before the planned crime. There is support from earlier studies that most likely, all benzodiazepines may increase aggression in vulnerable males. Chronic intake of high doses of FZ increases aggression in male rats. Because psychopathy involves aggression, we have examined whether psychopathy as well as any of the four facets of the Psyc

Insights into the link between drug use and criminality: Lifetime offending of criminally-active opiate users.

BACKGROUND: We test whether the offending trajectory of those who test positive for opiates is greater than test-negative controls and whether the relationship is constant both prior to, and post, opiate initiation. We consider whether these relationships differ according to gender and offence type. METHODS: The study provides an analysis of historical offending records in adults linked to test results for opiate and cocaine metabolites. Those testing positive for opiates were linked to treatment records to retrieve data on age of opiate initiation. Rate ratios (RR) were calculated to compare

Identifying Male Sexual Offender Subtypes Using Cluster Analysis and the Static-2002R.

This study examines whether clinically meaningful subgroups could be identified within a large, undifferentiated group of convicted adult male sex offenders. Of eight cluster analyses, a reliable three-cluster solution emerged based on the subscores of the Static-2002R with 345 sex offenders. To establish the validity of the emergent clusters, the three groups of offenders were compared on four domains: criminal history, psychosexual development, sexual attitudes and interests, and recidivism. The findings revealed meaningful differences among the group, and the implications of subgroup member

In vivo Experience With NRT to Increase Adherence and Smoking Abstinence Among Individuals in the Criminal Legal System: Study Protocol for a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: While tobacco use among individuals involved in the criminal legal system remains 3-4 times higher than the general population, few interventions have been targeted for this population to aid in smoking cessation. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a relatively effective and accessible smoking cessation aid; however, individuals frequently stop use of NRT early due to side effects and misperceptions about the products. The present study aims to address low medication adherence by examining the efficacy of an "in vivo" NRT sampling experience in individuals under community crimin

Severity of violence against women correlates with behavioral problems in their children.

In order to examine the type and severity of violence against women by intimate partners and the associated behavioral problems of their children, 83 abused women were interviewed when they presented to the criminal justice system for protective orders or to file assault charges. Two questionnaires were administered: (a) the 46-item Severity of Violence Against Women Scale (SVAWS) measured threats of abuse and actual physical violence, and (b) the 118-item Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) measured child behavior problems for children between the ages of 4 and 18.
