Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures. In a previous study we found that environmental exposure to pesticides was associated with a greater risk of epilepsy. The present study examined possible occupational risk factors that may contribute to the occurrence of epilepsy in farmers and pesticide applicators (sprayers). A case-referent study was conducted on 19,704 individuals over a 17-year study period (2000-2016). Epilepsy cases (n = 5091) were collected from Hospital records and referents (non-epilepsy cases, n = 14.613) from th

Seed dressing, i.e., the treatment of crop seeds with insecticides and/or fungicides, aiming to protect seeds from pests and diseases, is widely used in conventional agriculture. During the growing season, those crop fields often receive additional broadband herbicide applications. However, despite this broad utilization, very little is known on potential side effects or interactions between these different pesticide classes on soil organisms. In a greenhouse pot experiment, we studied single and interactive effects of seed dressing of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var. Capo) with neonico

In sub-Saharan Africa, there is considerable spatial and temporal variability in relations between nutrient application and crop yield, due to varying inherent soil nutrients supply, soil moisture, crop management and germplasm. This variability affects fertilizer use efficiency and crop productivity. Therefore, development of decision systems that support formulation and delivery of site-specific fertilizer recommendations is important for increased crop yield and environmental protection. Nutrient Expert (NE) is a computer-based decision support system, which enables extension advisers to ge

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, agricultural landscapes have been profoundly modified due to the intensification of agriculture, therefore leading to significant disturbances in all components of biodiversity. A survey on the knowledge of beekeeping realities and the use of phytosanitary products in areas of high honey production in Burkina Faso was carried out. Beekeeping realities design the state of beekeeping activities in the study localities.
METHODS: The objective of this survey was to characterize Beekeeping operations and to assess the level of knowledge of beekeepers on the effects o

The rapid growth in global population and the incessant demand for food warrant greater attention to sustainable agricultural practices. To ensure adequate food security, protection of crops from exposure to biotic agents (e.g., pathogens and insects) is imperative. Over the decades, synthetic pesticides have been used to control pests in agriculture. However, excessive and uncontrolled use of these chemical compounds causes serious environmental and health hazards. Therefore, algal biopesticides are used as biological agents to control soil-borne diseases and plant pests. The algae secrete a

Plants are attacked, not only by various microorganisms, but also by other enemies, such as molluscs, nematods, mites, and insects. They have evolved complex and efficient mechanisms to defend themselves against pathogens (hypersensitive response, systemic acquired resistance) and herbivores (release of volatile compounds that attract predators of the herbivores, accumulation of proteinase inhibitors). Yet, the confrontation of the plants with their invaders can also turn to the advantage of the latter. In the past, the attacks of crops regularly brought about dramatic economic losses. From th

BACKGROUND: Tropospheric ozone is an air pollutant that causes negative effects on vegetation, leading to significant losses in crop productivity. It is generated by chemical reactions in the presence of sunlight between primary pollutants resulting from human activity, such as nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. Due to the constantly increasing emission of ozone precursors, together with the influence of a warming climate on ozone levels, crop losses may be aggravated in the future. Therefore, the search for solutions to mitigate these losses becomes a priority. Ozone-induced abio

Plant protection against pathogens, pests and weeds has been progressively reoriented from a therapeutic approach to a rational use of pesticide chemicals in which consumer health and environmental preservation prevail over any other productive or economic considerations. Microbial pesticides are being introduced in this new scenario of crop protection and currently several beneficial microorganisms are the active ingredients of a new generation of microbial pesticides or the basis for many natural products of microbial origin. The development of a microbial pesticide requires several steps ad

In a comprehensive project the health risk for workers using pesticides in the flower-bulb culture was addressed in several studies regarding biological monitoring, occupational hygiene and health effects. With respect to biological monitoring, methods were developed for the analysis of metabolites in urine of captan, pirimicarb, zineb and maneb and the soil fumigant dichloropropene. For dichloropropene in a field study a clear relationship was found between the external personal exposure and the excretion of two metabolites (mercapturic acids) in urine. The application technique distinctly in

INTRODUCTION: In protected horticultural production, early disease identification and precise intervention are critical for safeguarding crop yield and quality while reducing chemical pesticide inputs. However, early-stage greenhouse diseases often exhibit extremely subtle visual symptoms, and their occurrence and progression are highly dependent on environmental condition variations, making stable and reliable early warning difficult to achieve using conventional methods based on single visual information or simple multimodal fusion.
METHODS: To address this challenge, a visual-environment j

The increasing limitations of chemical pesticides such as environmental pollution, pathogen resistance, and threats to human and ecosystem health have increased the demand for sustainable, biologically based crop protection methods. Eco-smart biocontrol has emerged as a game-changing paradigm that uses beneficial microorganisms associated with plants to suppress phytopathogens, boost plant immunity, and make agroecosystems more resilient over time. Moving beyond traditional single-strain biocontrol, eco-smart biocontrol integrates multi-omics discovery, artificial intelligence-assisted predict

The current situation, which includes changes in eating habits, an increasing population, and the unrestricted use of natural resources, has resulted in a lack of resources that could be used to provide nourishing food to everyone. Natural plant resources are quickly being depleted, so it is necessary to consider new alternatives. In addition to the staple grains of rice and wheat, many other crops are being consumed that need to be utilized to their full potential and have the potential to replace the staple crops. Millets are one of the most important underutilized crops that have the potent

Modern agricultural chemistry has to support farmers by providing innovative agrochemicals. In this context, the introduction of sulfur atoms into an active ingredient is still an important tool in modulating the properties of new crop-protection compounds. More than 30% of today's agrochemicals contain at least one sulfur atom, mainly in fungicides, herbicides and insecticides. A number of recently developed sulfur-containing agrochemical candidates represent a novel class of chemical compounds with new modes of action, so we intend to highlight the emerging interest in commercially active su

Pesticides are widely used in China for crop protection. However, the use of some highly toxic and accumulative pesticides has led to serious pollution to the environment. The knowledge that end-users of pesticides have about hazards is important for the prevention of acute poisoning. Moreover, farmers, especially those who purchase and use pesticides, often make important and long-standing impacts on the local ecosystem and environment. In this study, a specially designed questionnaire was used to collect information on their knowledge, attitude, and behavior related to pesticides in the Guan

The fungal contaminated crops or post-harvest products are unfit for consumption, hazardous to human health and threat to food safety. Soil borne phytopathogenic microbes cause severe yield losses at various stages and contribute to 40-50% crop mortality. Post-harvest fungal deterioration during storage is frequently observed primarily because of high oil content. At present, chemical disinfectants and agrichemicals are extensively used to control seed contaminating fungal infection as seed priming agent and/or post-harvest storage protectants. However, application of synthetic fungicides requ

Fungal pathogens cause devastating diseases in staple crops and pose a tremendous threat to food security. Therefore, it is critical to understand the mechanisms of fungal attack and plant defense. Recent studies provide new insights into the role of nutrient manipulation for both plant and pathogen combatants. On the plant side, a defense signaling system has been discovered that provokes starvation during disease to limit access to carbohydrate by the head smut fungus Sporisorium reilianum. For pathogenic fungi, a novel class of effector proteins in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae a

Climate change not only leads to high temperatures, droughts, floods, storms and declining soil quality, but it also affects the spread and mutation of pests and diseases, which directly influences plant growth and constitutes a new challenge to food security. Numerous hormones like auxin, ethylene and melatonin, regulate plant growth and development as well as their resistance to environmental stresses. To mitigate the impact of diverse biotic and abiotic stressors on crops, single or multiple phytohormones in combination have been applied. Melatonin is a multifunctional signaling molecule en

To determine occupational risk factors for coccidioidomycosis among adult Hispanic outdoor agricultural workers in California, USA, we conducted a case-control study of workers seen at the Kern County medical facility and referred to the public health laboratory for coccidioidomycosis serologic testing. Participants completed an interviewer-administered health and work questionnaire. Among 203 participants (110 case-patients with positive and 93 controls with negative serologic results), approximately half were women, and more than three quarters were born in Mexico. Associated with coccidioid

The findings of a negative association between past maize (Zea mays) production and current Parkinson's disease mortality by each prefecture in Japan tends to support the hypothesis that the nutritional condition that causes niacin deficiency might protect people from Parkinson's disease. Specifically, the negative association between both the area planted for dried corn in 1960, 1970 or 1977 and the area planted for sweet corn in 1960 and age-adjusted death rates for Parkinson's disease is ecological evidence supporting the hypothesis. Extending the analysis to other cultivated crops, even st

The use of beneficial microbes to reduce plant stress upon fungal pathogens is a promising strategy for sustainable crop protection. In this study, we evaluated five novel Burkholderia strains for their capacity to mitigate Botrytis cinerea infection in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and Fusarium graminearum infection in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). All strains significantly suppressed B. cinerea infection symptoms in tomato plants, hallmarked by a smaller decrease in photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll content compared to infected control. Using a GFP-tagged F. graminearum strain, we s
