Conservative surgery for giant cell tumors of the sacrum. The role of cryosurgery as a supplement to curettage and partial excision.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumors (GCTs) of the sacrum are a difficult clinical problem. Wide excision (total sacrectomy) is associated with high morbidity and pelvic/spinal instability. Curettage with or without supplemental radiotherapy is associated with a high recurrence rate. In view of the proven effectiveness of cryosurgery as an adjunct to curettage for extremity GCT, cryosurgery was used for treatment of GCTs of the sacrum. METHODS: Seven patients with GCTs of the sacrum were treated at our institution by conservative surgery from 1973 to 1992. Four patients presented with recurrent tumo

Cervical cytology after cryosurgery, laser ablation and conization. A comparison of the cotton swab and endocervical brush.

Obtaining an adequate Papanicolaou smear, as evidenced by the presence of endocervical cells, is paramount in following patients after treatment for cervical dysplasia. A randomized, prospective trial was done in which 203 patients with a history of cryosurgery, laser ablation or cone biopsy were randomized into two groups: 114 patients had cervical smears done with a cotton swab and 89 patients with an endocervical brush. The presence or absence of endocervical cells was noted on the cytology report. Overall, the endocervical brush produced significantly more adequate smears than did the cott

Cryosurgery and vascularized fibular graft reconstruction in proximal tibia osteosarcoma in young children: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteosarcoma epidemiology in children younger than 5-year-old is very rare. Currently, limb salvage surgery becomes the preferred treatment in osteosarcoma. Wide excision using cryosurgery has been reported as an effective and safe procedure for malignant bone tumors. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old girl was presented with pain and a lump on her right knee. Physical examination showed a solid circumferential mass in the proximal tibia, with limited range of motion due to mass and pain. Osteoblastic lesion with a discrete margin and narrow transition zone on the proximal tibia from pla

Patient Preferences and Comparative Outcomes Regarding Cryosurgery versus Electrodesiccation in the Removal of Truncal Seborrheic Keratoses.

Background: Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are one of the most common benign epithelial tumors seen by dermatologists. Many people elect to have these lesions removed, most commonly by way of cryosurgery or electrodesiccation. Objective: We sought to evaluate the comparative efficacy and patient preferences regarding cryosurgery and electrodesiccation for the treatment of truncal SK lesions. Methods: In this randomized, blinded clinical trial, 33 eligible subjects with two similar truncal SKs were assigned to receive treatment with cryosurgery and electrodesiccation applied to separate lesions. Cryosurgery of the oral and peri-oral region: a literature review of the mechanism, tissue response, and clinical applications.

Cryosurgery is a method of achieving lesion destruction by rapid freezing in situ. Application of cryosurgery in medicine widespread and its use within dentistry is also well documented, using both open and closed liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The major advantages of oral cryosurgery include bloodless treatment, very low incidence of secondary infection, and a relative lack of scarring and pain. This review outlines knowledge on the mechanisms, tissue response, and current practices of cryosurgery in the oral and peri-oral region. More experimental studies are needed to better understand

Stability changes after cryosurgery in long tubular bones in correlation to histological results: an animal trial.

STUDY QUESTION: Pathologic bone fractures in cryosurgery of bone tumors have been described in literature. This study utilizing a sheep model should prove the possible reduction of potential fracture while using a new miniature cryoprobe minimizing tissue damage and providing accurate control of the ablation process. Furthermore, postoperative histological changes should be investigated and the results correlated with the stability trials. METHODS: In 24 sheep, ablation of the femur and the tibial bone on one side was carried out. Ablation of the right femur was limited to an area of 2 cm(2)

Effects of nasal capsaicin pretreatment and cryosurgery on sneezing reflexes, neurogenic plasma extravasation, sensory and sympathetic neurons.

Local and systemic capsaicin pretreatment as well cryosurgery induced a long-lasting loss of sensory substance P-immunoreactive nerves in the guinea-pig nasal mucosa. In addition, cryosurgery caused a loss of noradrenergic sympathetic nerves, sclerosis of blood vessels, epithelial damage and fibrosis of the mucosa. The sneezing response to local application of capsaicin--but not that to nicotine--was reduced or abolished by capsaicin pretreatment and cryosurgery, while the response to tactile stimulation was unaffected. These effects were long-lasting and still present 2 months after treatment

Cryosurgery of eyelid actinic keratosis and the effect of adrenaline in local anesthetics - temperature mapping using IR thermography.

PURPOSE: The efficacy of cryosurgery is believed to depend on the thaw time. The presence of adrenaline in local anesthetics affects blood perfusion, and may thus also affect the thaw time. The aim of the present study was to use IR thermography to monitor the tissue temperature during cryosurgery of actinic keratosis, and to assess the effect of adrenaline in local anesthetics. METHODS: Twelve patients with actinic keratosis in the periorbital region underwent cryosurgery. The temperature was continuously mapped using a high-precision IR camera and was also visually assessed by the surgeon.

Intralesional cryosurgery enhances the involution of recalcitrant auricular keloids: a new clinical approach supported by experimental studies.

To explain the mechanism of action of a novel intralesional cryoprobe, thermal behavior measurements, and histological studies were performed in swine muscle specimens after intralesional cryosurgery ex vivo. Slow cooling (20 degrees C/min) and thawing (25 degrees C/min) rates, end temperature of -30 degrees C, produced 8 mm wide diffuse coagulative-type necrosis and a 3 mm-wide transition zone around the cryoprobe. In contrast, contact cryosurgery showed fast cooling and thawing rates (80 degrees C/min) and an end temperature of -100 degrees C. Efficacy and safety of the intralesional cryopro
