A DFT study of radiation induced alkoxy radical formation in crystalline α-l-rhamnose has been performed to better understand the processes leading to selective radical formation in carbohydrates upon exposure to ionizing radiation at low temperatures. The synthesis and characterisation of a series of liquid-crystalline aromatic-aliphatic copolyesters are presented. Differential scanning calorimetry showed these polymers have a glass transition temperature in the range 72 degrees C-116 degrees C. Polarised optical microscopy showed each polymer exhibits a nematic mesophase on heating to the molten state at temperatures below 165 degrees C. Crystalline keratopathy can be successfully treated by the Nd:YAG laser. We present two cases of crystalline keratopathy managed this way. A 36-year-old female contact lens wearer presented with crystalline keratopathy following recent treatment with topical steroids and antibiotics for a corneal abscess. Traumatic subconjunctival crystalline lens is a rare phenomena; we report a case of ocular trauma by the tail of a cow. A 60-year-old female presented with history of trauma to her left eye by the tail of a cow, she had severe headache, redness and pain in her left eye. She was admitted and the crystalline lens was found in the subconjunctival space and was removed surgically.

A model of the catheterised bladder was used to test the ability of urease-producing urinary tract pathogens to encrust urethral catheters. The study was performed to compare visual evoked potentials of old aphakic and pseudophakic patients (61 to 80 years) with age-matched controls. The crystalline composition of gallstones removed from 30 patients from southwestern Finland was determined by the X-ray powder method. A total of eight crystalline compounds, varying from one to four per stone, were identified. Of 35,000 consecutive cervicovaginal smears examined, 111 were found to contain crystalline bodies with a radiate structure. Ninety-seven of these 111 smears had been obtained from pregnant women.
