Effect of mixed fermentation of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus on phytochemical and flavor characteristics of Wallace melon juice.

BACKGROUND: Melons (Cucumis melo L.) are among the most commonly consumed fruits but they are highly susceptible to mechanical damage and rot during storage and transportation. New processed products are needed to avoid postharvest fruit loss and to increase health benefits. Fermentation is an effective means of utilizing the nutrients and improving flavor. RESULTS: Fermented melon juice (MJ) was prepared using three potential probiotics Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CICC21824 (LP), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum GB3-2 (LG), and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus XZ-34 (LX). The nutrition, flavor ch

Hydrogen Sulfide Promotes Adventitious Root Development in Cucumber under Salt Stress by Enhancing Antioxidant Ability.

As a gas signal molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can enhance plant stress resistance. Here, cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Xinchun NO. 4') explants were used to investigate the role of H2S in adventitious root development under salt stress. The results show that sodium chloride (NaCl) at 10 mM produced moderate salt stress. The 100 µM sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) treatment, a H2S donor, increased root number and root length by 38.37% and 66.75%, respectively, indicating that H2S effectively promoted the occurrence of adventitious roots in cucumber explants under salt stress. The results show that un

[Transcriptomic dissection of low-light tolerance and regulatory mechanism of CsCOL2 in cucumber].

Cucumber is a light-demanding crop, and low-light stress readily induces shade avoidance syndrome (SAS), leading to yield reduction. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the shade avoidance response in cucumber under low-light conditions, In this study, transcriptome sequencing analysis for low-light tolerance was first performed in cucumber, and a downregulated gene CsCOL2 responding to low-light stress was identified. To clarify the role of CsCOL2 in the response to low-light stress and dissect its regulatory mechanism, we constructed overexpression and RNAi transgenic vectors of

Synergistic effect of naphthalene acetic acid and salicylic acid on the growth and tolerance mechanism of cucumber under salt stress.

High soil salinity significantly hampers plant growth and crop yield by disrupting metabolic functions and causing oxidative, osmotic, and ionic stress. This study investigated the combined effects of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and salicylic acid (SA) in reducing salt stress in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. AR-8, filling a knowledge gap regarding multilateral plant growth regulator (PGR) interactions under saline conditions. Cucumber seedlings were subjected to 80 mM NaCl, with or without 200 ppm NAA and 300 ppm SA. Salt stress notably decreased seedling vigor, biomass, and chlorophyll

A Lactococcus lactis Starter Culture Reduces the Bloater Defect in Cucumber Fermentations Brined With Low Salt.

The cucumber intrinsic Enterobacter and Leuconostoc generate sufficient carbon dioxide (CO2) in early fermentation, particularly those brined without sodium chloride, to induce bloater defects prior to the onset of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus. Because of the Lactococcus lactis short doubling time, it is proposed as a starter culture for cucumber fermentation brined with 342 mM (2%) sodium chloride to prevent bloater defects. A screening of putative decarboxylases (27) in the cucumber fermentation bacteriome identified substantially more of such enzymes in Enterobacteriaceae (24 or 89%) relati

Zoonotic parasitic organisms on vegetables: Impact of production system characteristics on presence, prevalence on vegetables in northwestern Iran and washing methods for removal.

Fresh vegetables are essential components of a healthy and nutritious diet, but if consumed raw without proper washing and/or disinfection, can be important agents of transmission of enteric pathogens. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of zoonotic parasites on vegetables freshly harvested and "ready to eat" vegetables from greengrocers and markets in northwestern Iran. In addition, the effect of cropping system and season on contamination levels were assessed as well as the efficacy of washing procedures to remove parasites from the vegetables. A total of 2757 samples composed of fi

Role of Azospirillum brasilense in triggering different Fe chelate reductase enzymes in cucumber plants subjected to both nutrient deficiency and toxicity.

Azospirillum brasilense was reported to up-regulate iron (Fe) uptake mechanisms, such as Fe reduction and rhizosphere acidification, in both Fe sufficient and deficient cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). Strategy I plants take up both Fe and copper (Cu) after their reduction mediated by the ferric-chelate reductase oxidase (FRO) enzyme. Interestingly, in cucumber genome only one FRO gene is reported. Thus, in the present study we applied a bioinformatics approach to identify the member of cucumber FRO gene family and allowed the identification of at least three CsFRO genes, one of which was

Differential expression of cucumber RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 1 genes during antiviral defence and resistance.

RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 1 (RDR1) plays a crucial role in plant defence against viruses. In this study, it was observed that cucumber, Cucumis sativus, uniquely encodes a small gene family of four RDR1 genes. The cucumber RDR1 genes (CsRDR1a, CsRDR1b and duplicated CsRDR1c1/c2) shared 55%-60% homology in their encoded amino acid sequences. In healthy cucumber plants, RDR1a and RDR1b transcripts were expressed at higher levels than transcripts of RDR1c1/c2, which were barely detectable. The expression of all four CsRDR1 genes was induced by virus infection, after which the expression level

Chloroxyanion Residues in Cantaloupe and Tomatoes after Chlorine Dioxide Gas Sanitation.

Chlorine dioxide gas is effective at cleansing fruits and vegetables of bacterial pathogens and(or) rot organisms, but little data are available on chemical residues remaining subsequent to chlorine gas treatment. Therefore, studies were conducted to quantify chlorate and perchlorate residues after tomato and cantaloupe treatment with chlorine dioxide gas. Treatments delivered 50 mg of chlorine dioxide gas per kg of tomato (2-h treatment) and 100 mg of gas per kg of cantaloupe (6-h treatment) in sealed, darkened containers. Chlorate residues in tomato and cantaloupe edible flesh homogenates we

Possible health impacts of naturally occurring uptake of aristolochic acids by maize and cucumber roots: links to the etiology of endemic (Balkan) nephropathy.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are nephrotoxic and carcinogenic derivatives found in several Aristolochia species. To date, the toxicity of AAs has been inferred only from the effects observed in patients suffering from a kidney disease called "aristolochic acid nephropathy" (AAN, formerly known as "Chinese herbs nephropathy"). More recently, the chronic poisoning with Aristolochia seeds has been considered to be the main cause of Balkan endemic nephropathy, another form of chronic renal failure resembling AAN. So far, it was assumed that AAs can enter the human food chain only through ethnobotanica

Mechanisms of resistance to sulfur dioxide in the Cucurbitaceae.

The relative resistance of four cultivars of the Cucurbitaceae (Cucumis sativus L. cv. National Pickling, and inbred line SC 25; Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Prolific Straightneck Squash, and cv. Small Sugar Pumpkin) to SO(2) was determined. According to plots of the degree of exposure to SO(2) (which depends on the SO(2) concentration and the duration of the exposure), there is an 8-fold difference in resistance to this toxic gas among these cultivars. However, if the degree of injury is plotted as a function of the amount of SO(2) absorbed, all four cultivars appear similarly sensitive to the gas.

Carotenoid sequestration protein FIBRILLIN participates in CmOR-regulated β-carotene accumulation in melon.

Chromoplasts are plant organelles with a unique ability to sequester and store massive carotenoids. Chromoplasts have been hypothesized to enable high levels of carotenoid accumulation due to enhanced sequestration ability or sequestration substructure formation. However, the regulators that control the substructure component accumulation and substructure formation in chromoplasts remain unknown. In melon (Cucumis melo) fruit, β-carotene accumulation in chromoplasts is governed by ORANGE (OR), a key regulator for carotenoid accumulation in chromoplasts. By using comparative proteomic analysis

Physiological of biochar and α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles as amendments of Cd accumulation and toxicity toward muskmelon grown in pots.

BACKGROUND: Due to the severe cadmium (Cd) pollution of farmland soil, effective measures need to be taken to reduce the Cd content in agricultural products. In this study, we added α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) and biochar into Cd-contaminated soil to investigate physiological responses of muskmelon in the whole life cycle. RESULTS: The results showed that Cd caused adverse impacts on muskmelon (Cucumis melo) plants. For instance, the chlorophyll of muskmelon leaves in the Cd alone treatment was reduced by 8.07-32.34% in the four periods, relative to the control. The treatments with single ame

Nitric Oxide as a Beneficial Signaling Molecule in Trichoderma atroviride TRS25-Induced Systemic Defense Responses of Cucumber Plants Against Rhizoctonia solani.

In the present study, Trichoderma atroviride TRS25 is presented as a biological control agent, which significantly limits the development of infection and reduces the disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Rhizoctonia solani in cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). The systemic disease suppression is related to oxidative, signaling, and biochemical changes, that are triggered in response to a pathogen. Induction of systemic defense in cucumber by TRS25 greatly depends on the accumulation of signaling molecules including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) as well as salicylic acid

Potential toxicity of improperly discarded exhausted photovoltaic cells.

Low tech photovoltaic panels (PVPs) installed in the early '80s are now coming to the end of their life cycle and this raises the problem of their proper disposal. As panels contain potentially toxic elements, unconventional, complex and costly procedures are required to avoid environmental health risks and in countries where environmental awareness and economic resources are limited this may be especially problematic. This work was designed to investigate potential risks from improper disposal of these panels. To accomplish this aim an exhausted panel was broken into pieces and these were pla

Tobacco PR-2d promoter is induced in transgenic cucumber in response to biotic and abiotic stimuli.

The PR-2d promoter/uidA (GUS) gene construct was introduced into the cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) genome and several transgenic lines were produced. Activation of the PR-2d promoter was investigated in these plants in response to inoculation with fungal pathogens and after salicylic acid (SA) or cold treatments. Treatment with exogenous SA increased GUS activity 2 to 11 fold over that of the control. Endogenous SA and its conjugate salicylic acid glucoside (SAG) rose in parallel after inoculation with the fungal pathogen Pseudoperonospora cubensis, with SAG becoming the predominant form. The

Resistance breaking Root-knot nematodes carry a fitness cost associated with defective feeding site development.

Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) cause an estimated 157 billion dollars in annual yield losses worldwide. In tomato, resistance to RKNs is conferred by the single dominant resistance gene Mi-1, which has been widely integrated into commercial cultivars. Prolonged and widespread use of Mi-1 has led to the emergence of resistance-breaking populations in tomato fields worldwide; however, the consequences of resistance breaking for nematode performance on susceptible hosts remain poorly understood. Here, we compared infection outcomes of two closely related strains of Meloidogyne javanica, VW4 (Mi-1-avi

Triazole Sulfonamide Derivates: Inhibitors of the bc1 Complex to Control Cucumber Downy Mildew.

Cucumber downy mildew (CDM), caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is a destructive disease that affects greenhouse cucumbers and causes significant losses for growers. Amisulbrom, a triazole sulfonamide fungicide targeting the Qi site in the bc1 complex, has shown potential in effectively combating CDM. However, its detailed binding mode with the target is unclear. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) structure of the bc1 complex from P. cubensis was built, and its interaction with amisulbrom was investigated by integrating molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and molecular mechanics/Poi
