OBJECTIVE: To determine whether L-carvone increases the voltage threshold response to a noxious electrical stimulus in sheep.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, blinded, randomized, crossover experimental study.
ANIMALS: A group of six healthy adult sheep.
METHODS: Sheep were instrumented with cranial dorsothoracic subcutaneous copper electrodes. A stimulator delivered a 10 ms square-wave stimulus at 50 pps starting at 0.1 V with a 0.2 V second-1 ramp. Carvone is a monoterpene compound that has been widely used as a pesticide for more than 10 years. However, little is known regarding the fate of carvone, or its degradation products, in the environment. We used GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) to study the fate of carvone and its degradation and photolysis products under different soil and light conditions. The equilibrium constants K+ and K- for formation of the diastereomeric complexes of the two enantiomers of O,O'-dibenzoyltartaric acid (DBTA) with the chiral selector N,N'-diallyltartardiamide bis-(4-tert.-butylbenzoate) (TBB) have been determined by 1H-NMR. The experiments were performed at different temperatures in CDCl3 or in cyclohexane-d12/2-propanol-d8 mixtures. BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to the mint-tasting flavour carvone has been observed in patients with oral lichenoid lesions (OLL). Mint-flavoured products such as toothpaste frequently contain carvone. Snuff is a smokeless tobacco product that is chewed or placed in the mouth rather than smoked. In Sweden, the use of snuff and its flavoured versions is extremely common.
