An immunohistochemical study of the tissue distribution of the breast cyst fluid protein, zinc alpha 2 glycoprotein.

Zinc alpha 2 glycoprotein is one of the proteins present in breast cyst fluids, being found at levels 30-50 times its plasma concentration. Using an immunoperoxidase technique the distribution of this glycoprotein has been studied in a range of non-mammary tissues and carcinomas, as well as in normal, benign and malignant breast specimens. The breast cyst fluid protein was detected in all apocrine cells of skin and in the apocrine metaplastic epithelium lining of breast cysts. A progression was apparent from normal to hyperplastic breast in the number of cells reacting, particularly of cystica

Extracellular vesicles derived from Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst fluid may modulate liver fibrosis through 5-HT2B receptor.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) play an important role in cell communication, signal transduction, and the modulation of metabolic processes. The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) and its EVs on serotonin receptors liver cell line. RESULTS: The expression level of 5-HT2A receptor gene showed significant increase in EVs and HCF treated cells after 24 h, 1.73 (p < 0.0001) and 1.62 (p = 0.0084), and 48 h, 1.39 (p = 0.0069), 1.66 (p = 0.0034) respectively. A significant decrease in expression of 5-HT2B receptor gene was seen i

Appearance of fluid content in Rathke's cleft cyst is associated with clinical features and postoperative recurrence rates.

PURPOSE: The contents of Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) vary from clear and slightly viscous to purulent. Surgical treatment of symptomatic RCCs involves removing the cyst contents, whereas additional cyst-wall opening to prevent reaccumulation is at the surgeon's discretion. The macroscopic findings of the cyst content can reflect the nature of RCCs and would aid in surgical method selection. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 42 patients with symptomatic RCCs who underwent transsphenoidal surgery at our institute between January 2010 and March 2022. According to the intraopera

Characterisation of extracellular vesicles isolated from hydatid cyst fluid and evaluation of immunomodulatory effects on human monocytes.

Hydatidosis is a disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, which involves several organs of intermediate hosts. Evidence suggests a communication between hydatid cyst (HC) and hosts via extracellular vesicles. However, a little is known about the communication between EVs derived from HC fluid (HCF) and host cells. In the current study, EVs were isolated using differential centrifugation from sheep HCF and characterized by western blot, electron microscope and size distribution analysis. The uptake of EVs by human monocyte cell line (THP-1) was evaluated. The effects of EV

Characterisation of Antigen B Protein Species Present in the Hydatid Cyst Fluid of Echinococcus canadensis G7 Genotype.

The larva of cestodes belonging to the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex causes cystic echinococcosis (CE). It is a globally distributed zoonosis with significant economic and public health impact. The most immunogenic and specific Echinococcus-genus antigen for human CE diagnosis is antigen B (AgB), an abundant lipoprotein of the hydatid cyst fluid (HF). The AgB protein moiety (apolipoprotein) is encoded by five genes (AgB1-AgB5), which generate mature 8 kDa proteins (AgB8/1-AgB8/5). These genes seem to be differentially expressed among Echinococcus species. Since AgB immunoge

Ovarian cyst fluid of serous ovarian tumors contains large quantities of the brain amino acid N-acetylaspartate.

BACKGROUND: In humans, N-acetyl L-aspartate (NAA) has not been detected in other tissues than the brain. The physiological function of NAA is yet undefined. Recently, it has been suggested that NAA may function as a molecular water pump, responsible for the removal of large amounts of water from the human brain. Ovarian tumors typically present as large cystic masses with considerable fluid accumulation. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, we demonstrated that NAA was present in a high micromolar concentration in oCF of epithelial ovarian tumors (EO

Macrocystic pancreatic cystadenoma: The role of EUS and cyst fluid analysis in distinguishing mucinous and serous lesions.

BACKGROUND: Benign pancreatic serous cystadenoma usually is morphologically distinguishable from mucinous cystadenomas, which require resection because of their malignant potential. A macrocystic variant of serous cystadenoma recently has been described, rendering this important distinction more difficult. The aim of this study was to determine the EUS and tumor marker characteristics of mucinous cystadenoma compared with macrocystic serous cystadenomas. METHODS: Medical records for consecutive patients seen between 1995 and 2002, with a histopathologic diagnosis of mucinous cystadenoma or ma

Prostate specific antigen molecular forms in breast cyst fluid and serum of women with fibrocystic breast disease.

We have analyzed matched serum and breast cyst fluid samples for total PSA from 148 patients with fibrocystic breast disease. We have also determined the molecular forms of PSA (free PSA and PSA bound to alpha1-antichymotrypsin) in 78 breast cyst fluid samples. We found that total PSA can be detected in all cyst fluids and in about 75% of female sera. The median total PSA concentration in breast cyst fluid (bcf) is about 30 times higher than the median in the corresponding sera. Breast cyst fluid and serum PSA are not correlated with each other. Total serum PSA is inversely associated with pat

Breast cyst fluid concentrations of beta-endorphin, steroids and gonadotrophins in premenopausal women with gross cystic disease.

Breast cyst fluid (BCF) and plasma levels of beta-endorphin (beta-EP), oestradiol (E2), progesterone (P), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), prolactin (PRL) and cortisol were assayed radiochemically in a group of 10 premenopausal women aged 45-50 years suffering from gross cystic breast disease. The concentration of beta-EP (fmol/ml) in BCF (17.6 +/- 4.6 S.E.) was over four times higher than that in plasma (4.2 +/- 0.5 S.E.). The level of E2 was 41 times higher (1738.2 +/- 350.5 S.E. pg/ml) and that of P was 47 times higher (65.47 +

[An immunohistochemical study of cutaneous tumors using an antibody to the breast cyst fluid protein (GCDFP-15)].

The antibody against a molecular weight 15,000 protein isolated from the breast cyst fluid (GCDFP-15) was applied to tissue from cutaneous tumors, especially to sweat gland tumors. This protein was purified from the breast cyst fluid; antisera was prepared in rabbits. Ninety six cases of cutaneous tumors were stained by the PAP method. Apocrine hydrocystoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, so-called mixed tumor of the skin, extramammary Paget's disease, microcystic adnexal carcinoma, and mucinous carcinoma of the skin were positively stained. Eccrine poroma, eccrine spiradenoma, syringoma, ec

Fibrocystic breast disease: the significance of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin and other polypeptides in breast cyst fluid.

Breast cyst fluids from 118 women, aged 29 to 69 years, were analyzed by radioimmunoassays for beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Blood was drawn at the same time in many cases to compare hormonal levels in serum with those in the breast cyst fluids (BCF). The levels of beta-hCG in BCF were relatively high, with a mean (+/- standard error of the mean [SEM]) of 58.9 +/- 16.8 mIU/ml; serum levels of beta-hCG were negligible. LH and TSH also were elevated in BCF compare

Plasminogen activators are involved in angiostatin generation in vivo in benign and malignant ovarian tumor cyst fluids.

In many tumor types, angiogenesis is the net result of pro- and anti-angiogenic mediators and correlated with metabolic activity, growth, and degree of malignancy. One of the first discovered anti-angiogenic compounds is angiostatin, a proteolytic fragment of plasminogen. The requirements for in vivo angiostatin generation have not yet been determined. We investigated the levels of plasminogen and angiostatin by western blotting and of components of the plasminogen activator complex by ELISA in cyst fluid derived from benign and malignant ovarian tumors. Fluid samples from functional ovarian f

Choroidal fissure cerebrospinal fluid-containing cysts: case series, anatomical consideration, and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-containing cysts at the level of the choroidal fissure are rare embryological entities infrequently described in the literature because of their benign nature. On the occasion of a case series, we present an overview of the literature and discuss anatomical and embryological location, imaging characteristics, presenting symptoms, and treatment indication of these lesions. METHODS: We identified, in a retrospective study of a database with 81 patients harboring 86 supratentorial intracranial cysts, six patients with a CSF-containing cyst at the level of th

Ganglion of the distal interphalangeal joint (myxoid cyst): therapy by identification and repair of the leak of joint fluid.

BACKGROUND: Digital myxoid cysts are a relatively common pathology in the skin, representing a ganglion of the adjacent distal interphalangeal joint. Success of treatment is largely proportional to the destructiveness of the therapy and postoperative morbidity. We studied an effective, minimally traumatic surgical treatment in which tissue is not removed and morbidity is low. DESIGN: Open, nonrandomized trial of therapy. Methylene blue dye was injected into the distal interphalangeal joint. A skin flap was designed around the cyst and raised to identify the dye-filled communication between jo

1992 Homer Smith Award. Fluid secretion, cellular proliferation, and the pathogenesis of renal epithelial cysts.

Renal cysts, caused by hereditary or acquired disorders, develop in tubule segments. The central pathogenetic elements of cyst formation include abnormal cellular proliferation, accumulation of intratubular liquid, and remodeling of the extracellular matrix. This review addresses the pathogenetic basis of liquid collection and cellular proliferation. Cavity liquid. At an early stage of growth, most renal cysts become detached from the tubule segment of origin; thus, transepithelial fluid secretion is the source of the liquid in most macroscopic cysts. Evidence from in situ and in vitro studies
